  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2009 Genesis with 33358 miles. I bought the zero deductible extended warranty from Hyundai. The passenger side dashboard split above the air bag. Hyundai will not fix the problem under the extended warranty. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I just want to confirm, did you buy an official warranty from Hyundai or did a Hyundai dealer sell you a 3rd party extended warranty? If its a legitimate Hyundai warranty, does it cover interior panels? I believe they list covered items in your documentation. I'm curious as to why it spit as the dash material is soft touch plastics and isn't nearly as brittle as traditional hard plastic dashes. Did the car have a lot of sun exposure in that one spot?

What does the warranty paperwork say?

HPP Platinum plan is pretty clear that interior panels are not covered:

Not Covered:
• Mechanical, Exterior, Interior
Brake linings, brake drums and rotors, disc brake pads, standard transmission clutch components, air bags, solar powered devices, hinges, glass, lenses, sealed beams, body parts and/or panels, trim, moldings, door handles, lock cylinders, tires, wheels, batteries, light bulbs, upholstery, paint, bright metal, freeze plugs, heater and radiator hoses, exhaust system, shock absorbers, audio, security or other systems not factory installed, work such as front-end alignment or wheel balancing, constant velocity joint boots, safety restraint systems, cellular phones, electronic transmitting devices (except for those specifically listed under silver, gold, or gold plus coverage), radar detectors, appliances, near object avoidance systems and all laser radar cruise control components, vinyl and convertible tops.

Mine split in the same place on my 2009 Genesis. It happened just before I traded it in on the Equus. I never pointed it out to the dealer so I'm not sure if they even noticed it.
It was just under four years old with very low mileage at the time. I don't know if it would have been covered under warranty.

On my Equus they recently replaced the entire dash including the clear plastic piece covering all of the gauges. It had pulled apart at the air vents due to the extreme sun we have. That was covered under warranty. About two years old at the time also with very low mileage.

The warranty is from Hyundai. I took the car to a trim shop. They said they have seen this defect on Toyotas and Lexus. There are several cases on the web of the split happening on Sonatas. Some Hyundai fixed, some they didn't.
The trim shop said the dashboard is laser cut by the manufacturer so the air bag will easily deploy. I live in Florida. To me this is a question of a design defect independent of the exact wording of the extended Warranty. If the dashboard had split somewhere else, I would more easily accept the fact it would not be fixed. My wife and I were planning to buy an Equus this year. We will buy something else.

If extreme heat is an issue in your area I would suggest a windshield sunshade as it will protect the dash from sun exposure. My car is a 2010 with 65k miles and I don't have any issues with the dash but since I live in the Bay Area it probably doesn't get as hot as it does in your part of Florida.

I bought 2008 Azera Limited in July of 2011 before I bought my Genesis in November of 2012. Azera was still under OEM warranty when I bought it. Week or two later I noticed that dashboard got crack(split) around passenger air bag. When I googled I found out that it was very well known problem with Azeras and probably Sonatas. And it was manufacturing defect. Dealer replaced dashboard in Azera under OEM warranty.

The Genesis is mostly parked in the shade. We currently own 4 vehicles. One is a 2002 Infiniti Q45, Another is a 2002 Suburban. They have all been subjected to the same environmental conditions. None have had any dashboard damage. I do not use front window shade on any of my cars. My solution is simple I will not buy another Hyundai car.
I am sure for the 60+thousand dollars an Equus costs I can find a Vehicle that does not require me to use front window shades to prevent damage.

My Genesis doesn't require me to use a front window shade to prevent damage... Well I guess that's not true, UV rays will eventually wreck all plastics from any manufacturer ever. It's how it works.

Have you tried taking it to a different dealership or contacting Hyundai at a corporate level? Hyundai's dealership experiences are pretty awful.

I live in Georgia and have not seen a Genesis with a cracked dash. I wonder if it was some early production models that had the problem. My car has nearly 155,000 miles on it and we purchased it new. Have never used a sun shade and its parked in the sun 5 days a week while wife is at work. There is one difference in that its used a lot and does not sit for days in the same spot as do some low mileage cars.

I noticed today that my dash is splitting right around the laser cut in my Genesis. It is out of Hyundai warranty, but I bought an extended warranty through the dealership I purchased it from. Anyone know if this would be covered as I feel that it is a safety issue and have filed a complaint with the NHSTA.

Since no one here knows what type of warranty you bought we certainly cannot tell you if it is covered. Perhaps you can read the policy.

I don't know if it is a safety issue without seeing what is supports. Maybe the NHTSA will send out an engineer to inspect it.

Have you had any luck as I am having the same issue. I feel that it is a safety issue and contacted the NHTSA.

Looking at the photos above, it looks like a piece of vinyl that dried out from heat and split. I don't see it as any more than cosmetic. It may only be surface and not through if it is laminated material with a backing. Not big deal that I can see. You can always duct tape it :}

Looks like a cut with a box cutter. Hard to believe heat would produce a straight line cut such as these depicted. Probably a lot of fixes, but I doubt the colors would even come close to matching. Wondering about the airbags beneath the cut. When the air bags blow, do they blow the dashboard panels off?

This tread was started on '15. Wondering if the OP is still around to tell us what the result of the fix was.

This is the problem with OLD threads. Perhaps one threads should be locked.
