Sport model tire rotation

Since the sport model comes with staggered tire sizes, can the tires be rotated side to side to help them wear evenly?

They are not directional as far as I know so they can be rotated side to side. Whether or not that will be very beneficial I don't know, can't hurt though.

I think I would rotate side to side just to be on the safe side. You never know what driving habits or small misalignment might cause the tires to wear unevenly from side to side.

the G80 sport is staggered and not directional.

Since rotation is part of the included maintenance I have requested on every other rotation that the tires be dismounted from the wheel and remounted on the opposite side so that the inner side wall becomes the outer side wall, for more even wear.

The dealer had no issue doing this, but did charge me for the rebalance @ $12 per tire.. Which was acceptable to me as it was a custom request outside the covered service.

While the G70 tires are not directional they are asymmetrical - there is a distinct inner and outer tread pattern as shown in the attached picture - narrower grooves toward the outer section of the tire which is subjected to higher loads when cornering. I suspect if you look at the sidewall they will be labeled inner and outer.

I think he is referring to @Mr. Incredible's post regarding dismounting and reversing the tires. That is fine on the G80 since they aren't asymmetric.

He is actually dismounting the tire and remounting it on the opposing wheel so the config is different. Hard to believe and makes no sense to me

Agreed. But the discussion was around dismounting the tire and re-mounting putting the inside side wall on the outside and vice versa.

Remove rears...swap tires/rims. Repeat on the fronts (staggered setup).

My understanding is that is the way to rotate staggered, directional tires. You can't go front to back because they are different sizes and you can't go side to side because they are directional. So you need to take the tire off, flip it, remount and move it to the other side of the vehicle.

The g80 OEM continental tires are not directional or symmetrical. They can be moved side to side or dismounted and flipped so the inside is the outside.

I was not aware the g70 was using asymmetrical tires, so they cannot be dismounted and flipped. If they are also directional they cannot be moved side to side either.

If/when I change the oem tires to Michelin Pilots, I will no longer be able to dismount and flip because those are asymmetrical. But the all seasons are not directional so I can still move side to side, just not front to back.


Summer tires I.e sport tires cannot be rotated side to side or flipped because they are all typically asymmetrical and directional and in a staggered setup usually carry 1/2 the stated warranty as the none staggered setup.

I have staggered, directional tires on my S2000 that I never rotate/switch sides. It does fine. I just have to replace the rears twice as often as the fronts.

The only reason to rotate is for the tire warranty, not rotating voids the warranty.
