  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Spray paint exploded on Genesis

The paint Scheib used was made by his company so the product mark-up was his profit. The finish on cars in his day was much more simple than today without multiple base layers and clearcoat. His company would spray a car for 29.95, nothing else for that price. No buffing. His paint system may not include curing time or heat for booth to speed curing. Failure to cure properly was apparent. For those who knew nothing about painting an auto he was the right man.
There were better paint options for higher prices but the advertisement brought in the uninformed, same now as then. And his ads were everywhere and his speaking straight to the camera was impossible to deny.

Haha thank you. Ive thought about this but the can is gone and it was very old. Its been through years of heat cycles. Although its been mild for weeks leading up to this failure, Im sure the heating and cooling of Vegas weather over the years caused a failure. Im just happy to be over this, learn my lesson, take my lumps ya know
If the pic you posted earlier is the actual can, you can send that to the Rust-Oleum people and say you had to dispose of it "out of an abundance of caution," as the saying goes these days. Who knows, they may surprise you.

Going back to about 1960 something a friend had his car done. Looked decent from 15 feet away. Oh, he did not get the optional paint for the door jambs though. Covered his Bondo work though.

Glad you got your car back. Sorry it happened. In my current home, I designed an air-conditioned (separate mini-split system) storage room in my garage. I store all my paints and detailing products and other items that don't fair well in a garage. Seeing what happened, guess it is a good decision.

Your auto insurance would cover this under comprehensive coverage. Many states now call this OTC coverage (Other than Collision).

That is the craziest story I ever heard. Damn.

Well holy crap, I just read this whole thread. Glad it all worked out for you!!!

Glad there was a happy ending.
I just put all paints and removers in a plastic tub.
Goof off is designed for removing vandalism for anyone's information.

plastic tub is a good thought, but my can failed high enough up that a tub would not have blocked the spray. I keep everything completely packed away now, spray paint PTSD

And goof off....maybe on an old beater but I hope if this happens to anyone in the future they do the same as I did and bring it right to a detailer/body shop to get it fixed right without making it worse
