If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Taking it to the body shop tomorrow to see the damage. Clear coat spray paint, hole sprayed for a couple hours at least right onto my car

This happened in your garage? I have never heard of such a thing. Maybe an auto paint business knows of such an event. I need to look into my garage and assess risk issues. How did the can have a hole? So many questions.
You have my deepest, heartfelt sympathy.

Still trying to process this. Went to several shops before one wanted to take it on. Clear sanding, rubbing compound, it’s literally the entire car. Some parts with plastic or chrome might need replacing. 750 bucks to try this process, which they said will not be 100% because paint will get in cracks they cannot reach. Dust will accumulate there making it noticeable at points.
Paint can had pinhole in the side of it. Was just sitting on a shelf in front of my car, will NEVER keep paint out in the open again.
All the shop people were saying it’s analogous to vandalism, except in my case it’s literally all over instead of just some bad words or a drawing.
I’m devastated

Nice pattern. Maybe it will be cheaper to do the rest of the car to match? Get some artist to sign it and now you have added value.

Will that be covered by auto or homeowner's insurance?

Hope it works out in the end.

Wow, I think I'll be boxing up my spray paint cans now.
So, wasn't the other car affected too?

Not sure of how much time elapsed, but immediate action should have been wipe down of all surfaces with cloth wetted with mineral spirits, or toluene - based solvent, depending on paint base type.

More time that elapsed, the more the spray cures and more difficult to remove. Maybe waited too long??

You might not want to go this route, but this is probably covered under your homeowner's insurance.

Well, it looks like this is now resolved. Heres the whole (long) story:

Thursday night my wife comes home around 5:30 and parks in the garage. Everything is normal. Around 7:30 I go out into the garage to take some trash out. Thats when it all hits me at once: the smell, the haze in air, the layer of gloss all over the front of my car.

At this point I yell for my wife that something has happened in the garage and I will need her help. We open the garage and begin looking for the culprit. I can literally hear spraying so I follow the sound to a bottle of Rustoleum semi gloss protective enamel spraying a fine mist from the side of can right towards my car. This bottle sits in front of my car, maybe 2 feet away and at windshield level. My wife grabs it with towel and throws it and all our spraypaint cans to be safe into our trash can.

Ive already been trying to gauge the damage, and the paint has covered all of my car. The garage had a fine mist, but somehow my wifes car missed most of the damage and just has a bit of overspray in spots that are hardly noticeable. Its a clear spray, so thats one thing we can be thankful? for. The rest of the garage seems to also have been ok. My car got 98% of it, and that 98% was a lot. The paint is tacky at this point in parts, and feels dry in others. Its got a rough texture all over. The front is totally covered including the grill in a thick layer. The sides including windows, roof, and trunk lid all have a bit of a thinner layer in parts.

I pulled my car out (remember its dark at this point, body shops and detailers are closed) and my first thought is to try and wash it off if I can. I grab all my towels I dont care about throwing away and start to work. Nothing is happening, it was a long shot in the first place but it was all I knew to do when I knew every moment mattered.

At this point Im very aware that I dont have the tools or expertise to fix this issue in a way that will be satisfactory for the resale value of my car. I dry off the car carefully, pull it back into the garage and snapped the picture you all saw above. Im well freaked by this point, I know things are bad and its a pandemic so I know appointments for everything are so delayed. Im googling body shops, how to repair at home tutorials, anything I can to stay calm. Its getting late, I found a body shop that opens at 730 AM, lets try to go to sleep.

730AM, barely slept. Head right to the body shop and luckily its within a 1.5 miles because my windshield is like driving with a layer of glaze over it. People are looking at me, its so obvious. I tell the body shop guys to just come out and look. They start inviting more guys out to look, its a party now. They wont touch it, and say this is going to require a repaint and insurance claim. I am not down for that, I know I have more options. I dont want to raise my rates, have a repaint on any records, my deductible is already 500, and I have the cash easy.

Call the dealership next, drive over and talk to my Genesis SA. He freaks out with me. Says he has no hopes but recommends a body shop that has worked miracles before. Its literally across the street so I drive there without even calling, and they say they are booked solid for the next week. I mentioned my SA's name and that he recommended I come over. That seemed to open the door, they said if my SA recommended me knowing how busy they were it must be important. They came out and looked. Again, invited the whole shop out for a party. They said they could fix it, but could not guarantee that any of the trim, chrome, lights, plastics, etc would survive.

Cost = less than 1000. Time = 24-48 hours. Easy choice. Drop off the keys and wait for their call.

This body shop is amazing. The car seems back to 100% even on all the trim, plastics, etc. They said that the reason they were so successful is because I brought it so quickly. If had waited any longer, a full insurance claim for a repaint was my only option. They went out of their way to fix this asap for me, even being totally booked up. I gave them a little extra money because I know they put in extra time to get it done. It required a lot of cutting into the clear coat, and buffing back up in several stages is the gist of I guess. Im not very good with detailing or paint stuff. Im really thankful that everything has worked out. I cant get a new picture because of course Vegas gets hit by wind storm so my car is covered in a layer of fine dust now, doesnt image well.

Ive learned some lessons, the main one being that paints should be stored in a closed cabinet. As for what happened, our best guess is that the paint can was old and failed along the metal seam with enough fatigue.

Its been a stressful weekend. All is well that ends well however. Glad to be done.

This is fantastic news! Glad it wasn't as bad as we all thought.

Thanks for the write-up, and glad you got it taken care of. What a bizarre story. Aside from the fact that the spray was almost entirely directed at your car, it's odd that the can would have spontaneously failed like it did unless it was mishandled, stored at too high a temperature, or something like that. It may be a long shot, but you could try writing to the Rust-Oleum people, telling them what happened and how much it cost to repair. They may provide compensation. Couldn't hurt. If they offer more Rust-Oleum, though, I'd decline.

Wow, quite a story. You got lucky with that body shop. I was really expecting to hear you went to Earl Sheib, any car, any color$29.95.

Scheib began to expand nationally in the 1950s, and to raise awareness of his auto painting shops he turned to advertising. Earl Scheib marketed his shops through low-budget television commercials. Appearing on late-night television programs, Scheib soon became a national icon and celebrity, and his oft-heard sales pitch, 'I'm Earl Scheib, and I'll paint any car, any color for $29.95. No ups, no extras,' became an instantly recognizable phrase. Scheib, credited as being the first spokesperson for his own company, handled all advertising and developed and wrote his own television commercials. Scheib believed viewers would find his ads more convincing and genuine if he spoke directly to the viewers about the company's offerings.

This price was for painting only. Removal of badges and trim was for the owner. Masking and tape: owner. Earl Scheib did not use a broom.

It could have been! If it was hotter, if I had waited longer it would have cured. They were also very interested in how new my car was, thankfully it being so new means I had enough clear coat left to make this happen

Haha thank you. Ive thought about this but the can is gone and it was very old. Its been through years of heat cycles. Although its been mild for weeks leading up to this failure, Im sure the heating and cooling of Vegas weather over the years caused a failure. Im just happy to be over this, learn my lesson, take my lumps ya know

Appreciate the link @tarhoosier or I would have no clue what Ed was talking about haha. I really did get lucky. This body shop was amazing and has earned themselves a customer for any future issues. Ill also be recommending them to any person who asks in the Vegas area
