  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

SRS Winged Airbag Installation (Pictures)

My question has nothing to do with the AirBag.

After you reconnected the battery, did your car drive OK? Did the Transmission shift like it should? Did you still have all your pre-set information in the radio? How about all the Bluetooth info?

I.E. Anything different after you reconnected the battery?

From what I remember everything was good except the clock. I had to reset that. I believe all my presets stayed the same... not sure about the bluetooth though.

I'm getting ready to install my KDM emblem airbag cover. One question for all of you who have attempted this:

Is it necessary (or just advisable) to disconnect the battery prior to installation? Has anyone had their bag go off because they didn't do a disconnect? I ask this, wondering if the electrical connection to the airbag is one that is switched on when the engine is started or is it "unswitched," hence staying" hot" all of the time. Thanks!

I would go with the recommended installation and disconnect the battery. (And wait 3 minutes after disconnect).

No use taking chances with an airbag and all the chemicals involved.

The Genesis emblemed airbag looks so cool - I'm going to have to go that way myself.

The ones that are retailing for $295 from Korean Auto Imports, are they coming with the inflator? Is there any way to check the item upon delivery and see?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
1. Yes, disconnect the battery. It takes about 1-2 minutes to lift out the optional protective tray, take off the compartment cover, and disconnect the battery. (Unless you have a ton of crap in your trunk) Although nobody has reported problems, the tech service manual specifically calls out for this step. I had zero problems - just do it, as this precautionary measure is nowhere near taking the risk of having to buy another new air bag.
2. If your bag comes in a clear plastic bag with the Mobis logos all over it and the Mobis parts sticker, then you have everything, including the inflator.

It comes with the inflator. Take a look at http://www.kdmstuff.com/shop/step1.php?number=2727

It's $245 with shipping, and it's where I bought mine. Best price I could find.

FYI, I sold my stock airbag on ebay for $150:D

Based on the link you provided, the second and 4th picture show some metal clips that look like they can be snapped off and replaced interchangeably with the genesis and hyundai logo airbag "cover". wonder if anyone is making just the airbag cover with genesis logo.

I think it's the snapping 'off' part that would be the challenge, the clips look like they lock into place. Maybe someone more mechanically inclined can comment, but I've taken a closer look at my unit and counted a total of 13 clips.

It looks to me like you would have to find a way to pry all the plastic tabs open simultaneously without breaking them to loosen the cover. Also if you look at the attached pic, you'll notice that the three tabs at the top of the cover are recessed making them even more difficult to access.

I chose to go with the module without the compressor, requires an extra step where you have to swap it out from the old unit, but I was able to get one for $150 CAD on eBay.

Don't have access to an indoor garage right now so I'm planning to install it as soon as weather permits.

What do you mean by "anyone". These are original OEM parts for the Korean version of the Genesis.

You can ask Korean Motor Imports if they can order just the cover, but I suspect that Hyundai only sells the entire unit.

From what I understand there are Genesis airbags on the market that do not come with the inflator. These sell for like $150 or something like that. It is meant to take the original inflator out of the original cover and swap into the new "Winged" airbag cover. All parts are OEM but I guess some people don't like to ship with the inflator inside for reasons I don't know.

I bought mine with the inflator intact and was OEM from Hyundai.

I'm pretty sure the eBay seller who is selling just the covers without the inflator is getting the OEM part and removing the inflator.

It's highly problematic to ship something with chemicals that would probably qualify as an explosive due to the chemical reaction that inflates the bag. Most carriers either have restrictions prohibiting transport of this or require special handling (usually ground/sea transport only). Regardless, it sounds like both expensive and a hassle to deal with.

I just finished this installation (thanks for your tutorial). It goes fairly easy as long as you have the right tools (T40 Torx/Star Wrench, by the way). However, there are somethings to be aware of:

If you purchase the Genesis Wing Airbag from eBay without the inflator, you have take off the inflator from the Flying H Airbag and install on the Wing Airbag. Problem is however, it has to be inverted because of a metal notch that is different between the two airbags. Problem is you'll find yourself having to get a little creative when you reattach the red/orange and black plugs.

On startup, there is no airbag light on my dash, but it's something to consider for those of you wanting to do the installation from an airbag bought without inflator.

I also have a cover with no inflator which I'm planning to install soon, but If you swapped the inflator and your check light doesn't go on, it would seem something is amiss. Don't startup check lights confirm that systems are on line?

Could it be related to inverting the inflator? I haven't dismantled my steering yet, but in comparing pictures from the KAI unit which includes the inflator to the unit Ashdump's removed, it looks like the notches are in the same location. How much did you have to rotate the unit for a proper fit?

I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who had the same experience.

Sounds like the airbag with the inflator is a better option and a safer one. The airbag light should go on when you start your car, to ensure it's operation. If it doesn't, there's something wrong.

Buy the real airbag, and sell the stock airbag online. No need to mess with the inflator BS to save a few bucks and to put yourself in danger. My real airbag cost me $95, after I sold my OEM airbag on ebay.

Agreed, but for those of us that have already pruchased the non-inflator unit, we'll have to make due. But here's a thought... since we're using the same inflator why disconnect it at all? Once the cover is open, you would only need to disconnect the ground wire. Remove the 8mm bolts leaving the red and black plugs in place, attach new cover to inflator, reconnect ground and you're done.

Seems to me this approach would be even less intrusive than changing the whole module.

Well I took my own advice. I loosened the Torx screws to remove the cover, removed the 4 x 8mm nuts, snapped open the wire harness and slipped the inflator off the cover, leaving the ground connected. I switched the ground to the new cover, and installed the inflator.

I did have to rotate it 180 deg. as the notch on the metal frame was in the opposite end on the new unit, but still had enough slack on the wiring that I was easily able to replace the cables back in the harness and snap it closed.

I tightened the Torx screws and done... didn't even disconnect the battery (I don't necessarily recommend this unless you need an adrenaline fix). No problem with my airbag check light.

Had to buy a T40 Torx bit for $8, the whole thing took under 10 minutes, in fact... far less work than rebadging the trunk!

I am ready to purchase my vehicle. It has a cashmere interior. I saw that for both KDM and Korean Auto Importers that the Winged Airbag comes in black or beige. Does anyone know which one is appropriate for the cashmere interior? I don't want to purchase the wrong color as there are no returns.
Thanks,

There is a grey one - that is what to use with the cashmere interior (as I have).

Thanks - I am looking at both KDMstuff and Korean Auto Importers and both have either black or beige. Where did you find grey?

Yeah, I spent more time trying to figure out the tool I needed to purchase than it took to install. (A torx bit greater than T40 is like searching for a unicorn).

I am a little uneasy about inverting the inflator unit, but as long as it's primary purpose is to ignite, explode outward, and inflate the airbag, I think all is well. The airbag lights activate on startup and turn off after all systems are checked, indicating everything is online and a-ok.

In retrospect, yes, I would have bought the unit with the inflator attached. I might do so for the V6 Genesis I have.
