If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi, I collect my Genesis in a few days time, so been reading through the owners manual (US version, I can't find a RHD version for the UK). I have a question regarding the Start/Stop button. I've learnt that to start the engine, the autobox is in Park (P) and the brake pedal is depressed, and of course the smart key is in the car. Then I press the button. Do I need to press the button until the engine starts, a bit like keeping the ignition key turned until it starts in a older type car, or is just a quick press/release required? When the engine starts, does the illuminated text above the button show 'ON'?
Also, without pressing the brake pedal, I can step through ACC and ON. Presumably with the engine running, the button shows 'ON', so a further press will turn the engine off? Again, is this just a quick press, or is it a hold until the engine stops?

Regarding the electric parking brake, is it normal to press the AUTO brake button and just simply drive around with this feature active? When parked, presumably I apply the brake with the push/pull switch. When starting a journey, do I use the push/pull switch to disengage the PB and then push the AUTO button? Or does the AUTO button override the push/pull switch, so the PB would disengage when moving?
BTW, when the PB is engaged, is it slowly draining the battery?

Just quick button press with the brake pedal depressed is all that is necessary to start the car - you don't need to hold it in. Same to shut down - with car running, a quick button press turns the engine off (no brake pedal required). The "on" light does not stay on once the car is started.

You can drive around with the auto-hold brake function engaged (I assume this uses the electronic parking brake) with no problem - note that you will hear it disengage (a "whining" sound) if you exit the car quickly after shutdown if auto hold was on.

I never use the electronic parking brake as the car has always been parked on level ground, so can't address your questions on it's function.

Many thanks.

What is the proper procedure with the PB? I appreciate you don't need to use the PB, but is the following normally correct.

Having just started the engine, with foot brake on, release PB with push/pull switch.
Activate AUTO and drive around.
When parking, push AUTO again to disengage AUTO and apply PB with the push/pull switch.

cheers

I'd have to refer to the manual as I have never used the PB. I can tell you that you do not need to turn auto hold off as it disengages when the car shuts down. Also, I'd imagine that the PB releases on engine start as well - so don't think you'd need to release after starting? Again, I'd look it up in the manual.

If I drive the car today, I'll check this for you and report back.

Checked it and, if in gear (D or R), the PB engages when you pull the switch out and disengages when you push the switch in and hold for a second.

If in P, the PB engages if you pull the switch, but will not turn off if you push there switch. To disengage when in P, you need put the car in gear.

If Auto Hold is on when you shut the car off, the PB is automatically engaged at shutoff and is on when you next restart the car - but, again, disengages when you put the car in gear.

Many thanks.

I shall read this several times and inwardly digest.
This is a very complicated car. :)

I don't know if the G2 is any different than the G1 here, but I don't really think that the auto-hold uses the electronic parking brake. If you use the EPB, you do hear the "whining" or "whirring" sound. You don't with the auto-hold. Also, the EBP takes a little time to engage or dis-engage. The auto-hold doesn't, it's almost instantaneous, with no associated sounds. I would think the auto-hold grabs something in the master cylinder to keep all four brakes locked, until it sees some gas pedal. If anybody knows for sure....

That makes sense - there are no sounds with auto hold. However, for some reason, if auto hold is on when you shut the car off, it turns the EPB on and you definitely gear the whining/whirring if you exit the car quickly (I had incorrectly just assumed that was the auto hold turning off).

I think you are over-worrying and over-analyzing the whole thing - esp., if you don't even have the car yet.

1. Carry the fob in your pocket & simply push the start button to get the car going. My 2015 V8 has a huge battery in the trunk which gets the engine going in a jiffy. In America, a "jiffy" is maybe two seconds, or less.

2. Forget about the EPB - the electric parking brake - it takes care of itself.

3. After the engine starts - put it in drive and enjoy yourself - my 420HP V8 goes like a ****. Well, you know what.

After driving it around for a while - read the manuals, push all the buttons, etc. See what happens.

Don't forget to turn off Auto Hold if you go to an automated car wash. There is a reason the wash attendants say, "car in neutral, hands off the wheel and foot off the brake". With all four wheels locked the rollers that propel the car through the car wash will create quite a scene as try to move your un moving car through the wash. Quite embarrassing
