steering column memory

The only major probelm I've had with the steering column memory is that didn't seem to work at times in very cold weather, especially if the car had been sitting out in the cold for a long time.

In very cold weather, its not the steering column that gives me problems, but the memory for the seat. When I park outside in cold weather, and start the car up, yes, the seat goes up to the memory position, however it will not return the the rest position when I shut the car off. In addition, while in the driving position, if I try to use the switch on the side of the seat, it will not go back, but sometimes it will go forward. I've learned that when the seat starts to act up like this, to not push the seat switch forward, because I will not be able to get the seat to return back to a comfortable position. After the car has been driven for a while, and the interior of car has warmed up, only then will the seat return to the rear position when shutting off the car.

This has happened to me twice, once in Penfield NY last May and again in Roswell NM last December.

This problem is in addition to the steering column problem.

Exactly what I have. Stays ok for a few days, then I find the steering wheel low and have to reset. Also when my wife uses the car, she hits her button, and sometimes the steering is down in her lap (low) and she has to reset it back to her position. (The seat does not forget its preset position).

I Have my Genesis about 9 months. very month or so I also need to reset the steering wheel which has crept lower. Takes a couple seconds and I'd rather not have the dealer get involved on such a minior matter.

I'm so peaved at this whole stearing wheel column problem that I'm bringing it to the dealer to have the fixed.. will let everyone know how it goes.

Looks like a lot of owners are having problems with this steering memory feature.
Hopefully it can be fixed and work like it's supposed to.
I personally don't like the easy exit/access function myself, so I don't encounter this problem.

Thanks guys for the heads-up on the TSB. I pointed this out to the service manager and it seemed as though he was unaware of it. The problem was fixed and the wheel is operating OK now (so far).

Keep in mind the wheel stops moving as soon as you move the car out of park. My wife was having the steering wheel issue till she waited for it to move into place before shifting.

There is a new TSB on this subject. Summary below.

I believe it updates model ranges affected.

-----------------

This bulletin supersedes TSB 10-BE-002 to include revised Production Date
ranges.

DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides the service procedure to replace both the tilt limit switch and the
telescope limit switch.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
• Model - 2009/2010 Genesis w/ Power Steering Tilt/Telescope Column
• Production Range - April 25, 2008 ~ March 12, 2010

Proud owner of a 2009 3.8. Only problem i have relates to the steering column memory. i.e. after setting the preferred position and entering it in the memory, the next time i restart it rarely goes back to the position.

Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

My Hyundai mechanic couldn't replicate the problem (typical)

I have that problem and other mixed steering column memory issues on my 08 VeraCruz.. it is going to the shop for warranty work.

So far on the Genesis it is working correctly.

The updated TSB is 10-BE-002 which superseded TSB 08-BE-010.

From all I can see in reading the TSB is that it now covers 2009/2010 Genesis' from "Job #1 to November 11, 2009.

(I see that GensedanToronto says it goes all the way to March 12, 2010, buy not on my copy of the TSB).

The part number that is used in the switch replacement is 56390-3M000FFF.

BTW, I had the switch replaced last week, and so far, (I'm knocking on wood), it corrected the problem.

Mine returns OK, but over time (weeks) it drifts a bit low so that I can't see the headlight indicators and I have to manually run it up a bit. It is again good for a few weeks.

I suspect that there is a slight error in counting that adds up over time.

No big thing.

I'm wondering if the opposite is happening to me. I like the steeringwheel as low as possible but I can't see the turn signals. So I have the wheel set just above them but I think over time the steeringwheel keeps creeping up higher. I just reset it again.... we'll see what happens.

Mine started doing this regularly last week, and now takes two or three presses of my memory button before it goes back down to where I set it.

My first oil change/service visit is coming up, and this is definitely on the list.

Sadly, while making my appointment today, I asked the service adviser to pre-order the parts so I wouldn't have to come back and they could take care of the issue while the car was in for the oil-change...

I was told that if they ordered parts for every customer who "just thinks" that there is an issue, corporate would be very upset for many unnecessary parts being delivered to dealerships for unnecessary reasons. Oh yeah, I forgot, the customer is never right, and just because they've already issued a TSB for this problem, amended it for basically ALL Genesis sedans equipped with this feature, there's just no way to trust a customer's complaint, and it's far better to have them come back to the dealership more than once: 1st time to diagnose, 2nd time to fix the problem. Just silly.

I had the same problem. after 2 dealerships and around 5 attempts and customer affair, then it was fixed!!! BAD SERVICE!

Well, for the most part, my Steering Column is fixed. I had the TSB fix done a few weeks ago, and in normal starts, the column comes down to the correct memory position.

That said, I did have a problem ONCE. When starting the car, as the Steering Column is coming down to its correct memory position, it stopped, then again started to its memory position. (Computer "Burps"?) However the position was low. Even touching the memory button would not make it go to its correct position, so I had to adjust it back to the correct driving position and put it back into memory. Note that this is not the problem I had before the TSB fix, because before the TSB fix, it would lose its memory position often, and now it only forgets its position when the steering wheel stops midway down (hiccup), before it continues down, when starting. I can live with it, as it has only happened once since I had the TSB fix done.

Now, I wonder what is going to happen when I go up to Western NY in three weeks, if my memory seat stops working, after parking outside in cold weather. (I know, its not that cold in May, but it did happen to me last May up there, as well as in Roswell last December - just something gets cold and does not allow the seat to adjust back or forward, even manually, until whatever it is warms up). I'd hate to bring it to one of the dealers in the Rochester area to plug in to see what is wrong, as I don't trust either dealer there, however if they can give me some kind of a code, I would rather have my Orlando Hyundai dealer do the fix, as they are great.

I wonder how many people are having issues because they take the car out of park before the wheel reaches it's position (which makes it stop moving.) It seems to take a long time to get back into position...seems odd that it has to do the two motions consecutively, instead of together.

Certainly not me... I know the difference between waiting 'til it has reached its intended position and interrupting it by shifting into gear too quickly.

That said, I did have the TSB performed on Monday, and so far, so good (2 days running so far).

I haven't noticed it going lower than it should YET, but will keep my eyes peeled should it stray from saved position.

My 2010 has same problem. Took it to Garden Grove Hyundai in S. Cal which was a waste of time. They claimed that the TSB applies only to cars with complete dead switch. Still has the same problem and will take to another dealer. Hyundai dealer oil change is cheaper than Lexus but service is pretty terrible - answer to every questions is we can't find anything wrong. I thought the dealers just recharge Hyundai so what's the problem. Anyway dreading the day I have to have something major services...

Oh that's just plain ridiculous! I'd say that a call to someone up the management chain is in order, as the TSB applies to all VIN series sedans and does indeed make a difference (mine's been working like a champ since having it done.)

Wish I could send some more words of wisdom your way, but here in St. Louis, I've not had quite that much difficulty in getting through to the service department.

Not to hijack the topic, but is there a list of TSBs that should be performed upon a new vehicle delivery? Or what in particular should I ask them to do before they hand the keys over?

The only major issue I had before taking delivery of mine was that the map data on the Navigation system was from 2008, and I told the dealer that there was no way they should be shipping these cars in that condition. He agreed to look into it for me, and within a couple of weeks, the service manager had a 3 DVD set for my upgrade, which they did free of charge. I evidently caused quite a stir in a couple of other forums here by saying that I had the update for my Navigation done, and that my map data was now from 2009, while other dealers were flat-out lying to their customers about the lack of availability of any kind of upgrade. After sending along the phone number of my service department, dealerships started speaking with each other, and miraculously, a TSB appeared for updating the Navigation on any 2010 model with Technology package that was to be delivered new...

That's about all I know of unless something's seriously going wrong with your vehicle. I've had the Navigation and Steering column TSBs performed, and that's about it thus far.

Thanks for the tips. Will address on next oil change. Perhaps I was a little harsh on Garden Grove Hyundai. They were very nice but just could not fix the problem and I still don't understand why they did not want to address the TSB. Does anyone know if replacing the switch actually solves the problem?
