  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Folks,

I hope I am posting this correctly. I saw some older posts that are similar to my issue, but not exactly. Thought it would be good to post a new Thread to see if anyone is having the same issue.

So, I got my 2016 Genesis 3.8 AWD in January. Had a few things done, new winter tires/rims, new rear brakes/rotors (holy expensive!), alignment and tire balancing (twice now). I am getting a slight pull to the right (which from my previous research shows that this is quite common on these cars), however my biggest problem is the feel of the steering. I feel like I have very little control over the car when driving and that I can rotate the steering wheel about 1/2" right or left without the car following the pattern.

Each time I go to the dealership, which is at 4 visits now, they keep saying the suspension is good and the alignment is good, tire pressures are at recommended and start to blame the electric steering. I have a 2017 Civic now and I had a 2018 Colorado a few months back. The Civic feels amazing and super precise compared to the Genesis (does that make sense?) and the Colorado had electric steering and while it definitely was not be most sensitive it was eons better than the responsiveness in my Genesis.

Sport mode does tighten it up and makes it a bit more enjoyable, but it still feels like I have less control on the car.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I emailed Hyundai Corporate today to see what they say, but my hopes are not high with them.

Thanks in advance!

Update:

I took my car on a road trip this past week and noticed something interesting. When I am going in a straight line and a slight bend in the road is present, the wheels turned ever so slightly but my steering didn't move at all. This would explain the issues I am having with steering, kinda like the wheels and steering aren't working together properly. Any ideas what this could be??

I have not heard back from Hyundai yet and will call my dealer Monday - but any help would be great. Thanks

Could perhaps be related to soft winter tires and a heavy car? Have you tried driving another similar Genesis to see how it handles? Would be ideal to drive one at the same dealer so you can grab it again later. That's going to be the best apples to apples comparison, noting any differences in tires of course. In either case, demonstrating this behavior with the service adviser and/or mechanic will be key.

I have noticed that just in general, the Genesis can appear every so slightly "loose" during certain maneuvers. Which I attribute to the average OE tires. But is overall rather secure and tracks straight ahead.

Also, make sure you have lane keep assist disabled, if available. That thing gets confused at times. ;)

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour, and reconnect. Then push the start button twice without starting the car, so everything comes on except the engine. Then turn the steering wheel all the way left until it stops, hold for a second, and turn it all the way right, hold a second, and then bring it (and the wheels) straight again. Turn off the car, restart, and take it for a spin.

I've noticed in the past what felt like some play in the steering wheel on the highway. Like I was always correcting with the steering wheel. What I finally noticed is the car is very sensitive to the wind. It's like driving a van or truck and getting pushed around.

Try another dealership and ask them to focus on the electric steering. The tech computer can recalibrate the steering sensor per the Service manual and it takes about 5 mins.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I did try my coworkers Genesis and the steering was much firmer and responsive. They had different winter tires than me. I will try and see if I can drive the car with my service adviser - good suggestion. A lot of the time if I let go of the steering wheel the car will sway to the right in an aggressive manner, but other times it will coast straight.

Tried your suggestion and took the long way home from my parents place. Good suggestion, but my issue unfortunately still is present :(

I did some brief research at my parents and this somewhat sounds like it could be related to the 'speed sensing electric steering', maybe? Maybe some bad sensors?

I emailed my adviser since they are closed for the weekend. Asked if I could sit with them and show the issue and mentioned the speed sensing stuffs. Hopefully have better news when they take a look at it next week.

Will keep posted. Thanks.

Well, I am at a loss. I know this is an old thread, but maybe someone now or in the future will develop this same issue and will be able to contribute.

I have done two other alignments through Hyundai, and two separate tire rebalancing - both not fixing the issues.

What frustrates me the most is that, I went on two ride along's with the mechanic. The first time the issue did not really show up. The second time it showed up and he kinda just scoffed that it was the road and not my car. His solution was to do a third alignment. The dealer owner and manager would not do anything further. Hyundai Canada said I can drive my car to the next closest dealership (400km away) and IF they can find an issue then they may try and help me, but apart from that they will do nothing further.

Blah. That sucks.

Sorry to hear this is going on. It's never good to have a dealership not help you out.
