  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The steering wheel is making a "click" sound that can be heard and felt when turning a little bit from center. After the "click" the steering wheen then "catches" something, and turns the wheels. The "click" can also be heard and felt when the engine is turned off. Normally, the steering wheel cannot be moved when the engine is off...but now there is some play, and it makes the exact same "click." I first noticed on a road trip, when making slight steering adjustment on sweepers, the wheel would make a clicking noise, and I would feel it. It feels really, really weird when taking curves, or standing at a light and then taking the turn, only to have the wheel click for the first millimeter or two of the turn.

Anyone else have this issue, even in some other car? I have never felt something like this from a steering wheel. It's going into Genesis of South Loop first thing tomorrow morning.

I have not experienced anything like that on my G70... I've had a couple cars with a bad tie rod, it had an unsettling clunk on one side with a weird steering wheel feel. You could even move the affected wheel if you were grabbing it and shook it hard enough. Anyway, that seems a little different than what you're describing, but it's the closest thing I can think of at the moment.

I'm interested to see what your dealership says. My guess is that maybe something is going on with the electric power steering motor, though I have no evidence to back up my suspicion.

I am 99% certain it's the steering wheel clock spring. The thread TinsleyC posted above, and countless BMW threads confirm the symptoms, sound, and feel I am getting from the wheel. Today, the service adviser claimed he could not hear or feel anything. They cannot get to my car until Thursday, as their Hyundai techs are slammed with work, though he did promise they would look at everything, including the mechanisms behind the steering wheel.

Pretty disappointed, as the car only has 4,668 mostly highway miles on it right now. I'm just hoping that the techs don't come back with another "cannot reproduce/this is normal." I've never had this issue pop up on any car I've owned, same with friends and family. I now know a lot about steering assemblies, though...so that's cool, I guess.

Genesis of South Loop techs and service advisers said they did not feel anything, and even had me drive in a showroom G70 with them....where I clearly felt a difference in steering.

I went to McGrath City Hyundai today, AKA Genesis of Oak Park, and the service adviser there almost immediately felt what I was talking about, which is a promising sign. It also seems to be the most well run Hyundai dealership I've visited so far. Everything seems organized, they are well staffed, and no one sounds like they don't want to be there. The people are also super friendly and actually answer the phones.

Nice! Will they fix it for you?

They will not. They just called me back. They say they can feel it, took apart the steering. But can find nothing wrong. Anyone have any ideas for next steps?

Damn....

Ask them if they can replace the clock spring, despite everything looking okay. It's not difficult to get to, especially given the fact that they already pulled the steering wheel off.

Edit: this may still be the correct part number, but it says discontinued so there might be a different number.

Was trying to look up how much it costs, but evidently no such luck.

They want to charge me some ridiculous amount to replace it, since they think it’s fine.
But they literally said they notice a difference from new ones on the lot. Once they say that I would feel like they would be obligated to continue researching and fix even if that means replacing the entire steering assembly

I thought so too. At this point I’ve resolved never to buy a Hyundai product again. The lengths they go to in order to avoid fixing things is honestly impressive. Maybe I need to finally contact an attorney?

I don’t know, lemon law stuff isn’t easy and once you get an attorney involved Genesis won’t work with you on any level. Have you tried calling Genesis to see if they can offer advice or help?

I have. Their response was “we trust our technicians 100%, there is nothing wrong with your car. Your case has been closed.”

Jeez... What a bunch of scumbags...

I would have lost my cool by now if I were in your shoes.

Can they buy the car back, since you're not satisfied with the result?

They won’t even entertain that. Makes sense, given they won’t even attempt a repair. They say my car is perfect. I lost my cool on the phone once and said “shit”. They said they don’t tolerate that kind of language and hung up on me once.

I literally have no response for this. I’m sorry man. You’ve done everything I would have

Start googling lemon law stuff in your state, see what you need to do to qualify and then once you’ve qualified contact an attorney...or...go to a good reviewed mechanic, eat the diagnostic charge and see what they say

^That, or jump ship and trade it in for something else.

😣

If you feel mechanically inclined to do so, you can replace it yourself. It's what I would do. Give the finger to your dealership.

New OEM clock spring can be bought here on eBay, straight from Korea, $75 shipped...

OEM CONTACT ASSY-CLOCK SPRING: Hyundai G70 17+ [93490G9320] | eBay

I can send you the .pdf on the replacement process straight from the FSM. Just let me know. Or if you're close by I will be more than happy to help you in person.

Thank you so much. I’m in Chicago, though. If you can send me the instructions, I’ll give them a look and consider doing this myself.
