Strange CC warning light

We were driving home from St. Paul after a hockey game (Go Wild). It was around 33 degrees and a combination of rain, snow, and sleet. I had it on CC at about 50 mph in a 60mph zone due to the weather. All of a sudden the CC kicked out and I got a symbol that was a "!" beside something that might indicate a slippery road. OK, so maybe road was slippery. So I drove a bit until out of the precipitation to where the road was only wet. Tried to turn the CC on again, but same signal and no CC. Drove several more miles and another repeat. Took an exit, shut the car off, restarted and got back on the highway.

Same deal again. I tried again every few miles (by now the road was dry) and still the same deal. Finally, out of frustration, I started quickly repeating the CC on, then set, then turned CC off again due to warning light and repeat again.

Finally, after about the 6-8th time, the CC started working again and drove the rest of the 70 mile trip home.

Anyone else ever have that happen??

Just a guess but if you're using radar guided cruise control (the default) then maybe the sensors were covered? That or maybe if the ECU senses consistent slip conditions it will disable CC for safety. Did you every try using basic cruise control with radar disabled?

Sensor was covered/wet. I wouldn't use CC at all with damp roads.

How can you disable the radar portion? On my 2011 and my 2014 you can not.

I would imagine the sensor was frozen over. Because it should work fine even in rain - so wet isn't the issue.

I guess you can't. I just checked my car and I was under the impression that I had a switch for it but I must of have been thinking of the AFLS switch for the adaptive headlights.

I don't have a switch for my adaptive lights in my 13. I have a button for the lane departure and an esc button. was it and optional thing to have a switch for the lights? Or was it only on earlier models or tech package?

To the OP. I have had that happen once before as well. Lasted for about 30 mins Then worked fine. My suspicion then was that the road was quite bumpy And the computer deactivated it because of loss of traction risk.

It was on the earlier tech package. My 2011 had a switch to disable the adaptive lights. My 2014 has the lane departure button in the same location.

I cannot imagine why you would ever disable the adaptive lights, so I don't miss the switch. But I also don't use the lane departure so it doesn't matter either way. lol.

One note - I did read that on the 2013/14 you can disable the adaptive lights by placing the light switch into the ON position instead of AUTO position if I recall correctly from reading the manual.

For what it's worth, the air temp never dropped to freezing and road surface was well above freezing. The initial warning could have been due to hydro-planning perhaps, but that condition quickly ended. I don't understand why the CC couldn't be reactivated once that condition was gone.

It was the SCC malfunction indicator.


"The warning light illuminates when the vehicle to vehicle distance control system is not functioning normally."

This is what the Owner's manual says. (It's on my page 4-66 of my 2013 manual)

Your car should be under warranty.

Was there road grime/oil, etc on the sensor(s)? I have seen some pretty nasty road grime in mixed weather like this.
