  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sudden engine shutdown

Did you ever get this solved? I am having the same problem but can duplicate it!

Im curious to see if it has anything to do with the crankshaft since there was a recall on the same year of Sonatas!

I was on a 1200 mile road trip and this happened to me. I was doing 40 mph and pulled to the shoulder to check the map. The moment my hit 0mph the car turned off. All electonics shut down too. I press the start button and everything came back to life. (I think the nav screen showed funny artifacts that went away after a few seconds.)

I told the dealer a month later and they said there's nothing they can do if they can't replicate it.

Thanks for the replies. I just setup a case number with Hyundai and will follow up with the dealer this week!

I wonder if this might be somehow related to the problem with the headlights shutting down during a turn. That problem turned out to be a bad turn signal switch but if the electrical connections somehow use that same path I can see where this might also occur.

The only thing that does not make sense to me is your problem seems to be with the V6 engine only and the turn signal problem was a V8/R-spec issue.

I have a 2012 Genesis and have had the engine stop while driving twice since
October. No indicator lights come on. Both times I was driving under 25 mph
making a turn. Very scary to have this happen. First time I took the car back
and service writer could not duplicate the problem. Today I dropped the car
back again with a different service writer who told me he has never heard
of this problem and" has been in the business many years".
I am worried this is something that they cannot fix and I am not going to be
confident about driving the car without worrying about whether or not it may
shut down while driving for no reason.
Anyone else have a similar problem?
Thanks for any comments or advise.

This exact same thing happened to me today - extremely scary experience. I have a 2012 Hyundai Genesis RSpec with 85,000 miles. Was driving down the interstate - started to get a message on my navigation system saying "not to use while engine was not running" but the engine was running - I was driving then got a message "check power system" and then all lights on the dash came on and the car died including power steering at 75 miles an hour on the interstate - we lucky to get to the side of the road without an accident. Once there, nothing worked - no emergency lights, no trunk opener - nothing. Had it towed to the dealership waiting on diagnostics but am completely rocked by the experience - how will I ever be able to trust this will not happen again? Please let me know your thoughts - I am so disappointed!

I had this happen a few times. It turned out to be the positive battery terminal not being tight enough. In fact, you can never make it tight enough, especially if you are in a really cold environment. The clamp mechanism uses a ramp type gizmo that does not tighten well. I ultimately replaced it with an assembly that clamped tight as you tighten the bolt. Has not happened since.

The way I proved it was to complete the circuit with one side of a set of jumper cables. Once the car started, I knew I was on the right path.

@Mcgreeff - anything more to report on this?

Yes my 2013 Genesis is doing the same thing and i can not find out what the problem is with my car

This has happened to me also, I thought I accidentally hit the start button and it shut down. Started it up and it hasn't happened again, that's been about a year ago, I have a '12 R-SPEC. If there's a fix please post that info...

any chance that it might be loosing connection with the key fob? maybe if it doesnt see the key fob it will shut itself off, then by the time you go to restart the engine it is able to see the key fob again? I know every now and again my 09 will say the fob isnt in range even when it's in the same place i always have it.

just a though

It's an electrical problem somewhere between the battery and the ECU inclusive.

It has nothing to do with the presence of the key fob. I drove home ~20 miles yesterday without a key fob in the car.

Engine stopped twice today (2011 Equus). First one happened while getting food, once the car came to a complete stop. Placed it into park and attempted to start the engine again and nothing happen. Had a nice gentleman give me a jumpstart thinking it may have been the battery. It did start after a few tries. Once we got back on the highway (I95N) the engine stopped again with no indications. We were in the middle of traffic on a bridge. This was very unsafe. However, without touching anything the car starts backup. Do not have any answers. The car was just above ¼ tank of gas.

My spouse just borrowed my 2012 Genesis and reported the same thing happened. He found it unsettling.

Don’t mean to gravedigger but is there a link or anything to the terminal clamp you used? Currently having the same issue

First time issue with me. Happened yesterday.
Right turn under 20mph
Engine shut down, no steering or breaks. All the dash lights came on.

Almost ran into a car in the oncoming traffic.

Serious problem. I will try and "adjust" the battery connection. I do have an after market battery that was replaced last year. Hunting around the web has got me a tad uneasy with the car as it appears to be a semi common problem that is not being addressed by Hyundai at all.

I just adjusted my battery cable on the positive side (it was easily removed by hand). I added a spacer on the adjustment clip to allow for a tighter fit. All in all it is a poorly designed post clamp. Seriously hope that it corrects the problem.

I have a 8 month old 2018 G80 Ultimate. I had this happen twice. Each time while accelerating from a stop sign the dashboard lights came on and the engine died. The car started up each time after putting it in park and hitting the ignition. The dealer could not find a problem and returned the car. We opened a claim with corporate to protect us if it happens again or if it results in an injury. Corporate gave us a call and let us know that they are concerned and are monitoring our claim.
