  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all,

I am on the cusp of buying a 2012 3.8 tech + premium service loaner car. Wanted to ask the group about any caveats/gotchas related to this? It has full new car warranty, etc. and about 5K miles.

Buying from Rick Case in Duluth. Price-wise, I'm at about $34K + TTL.

Thanks to all!

Frank

I can speak to the fact that the Service at Rick Case in Duluth is great. Try getting a drive out TTL price of $36,000 and get them to include at no cost their 20 year 200,000 mile warranty. I don't deal/consider prices unless its the actual drive out price, too many times a dealer will add junk fees at the last minute.

I would check for the infamous surround sound problem before I bought the car. Make sure the box in the settings for surround sound is checked on all sources AM, FM, XM, etc with the engine running and make sure it sounds ok. Next turn the engine off and wait 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes turn the engine back on and make sure the surround sound automatically remained on for all of the audio sources. The check will will still appear next to each sound source in the settings menu. If surround sound stayed on, you're good. If not you may wind up with a lot of aggrevation like I did. There is a TSB out on this but I'm not certain if it fixed the issue for everybody. Save yourself the aggravation. It took me a long time to get this issue squared away.

I think the price quoted is a little high. I paid a smidge over $36K for my Premium/tech in November 2011. The 2013s have about $2000k in rebates on them. I'm guessing you can buy a new 2013 for $35-36K plus tax and license (after rebates). Your 2012 should be priced at about $31.50K-32K imho. Personally I like to compare prices before taxes and license fees since each state is different. There is a "price paid thread" on this forum and I would suggest you have a look at that thread.

I bought my service loaner from Rick Case in Duluth too. No issues. It's a no-brainier for the value. My extended family has purchased several service loaners from several makes over the years. No one has ever had an issue.

Hi GenesisCaptain! Good to hear. Can you give me some specifics... when you bought, trim, price, etc? I appreciate all the information!

I got a Tech package 3.8 with about 3,500 miles. I bought it in August. I can't remember the exact price, but it was pretty close to your offer-- about $34K. Based on my experience, I think your offer is excellent.

Who's your salesperson?

Carsdirect.com says a 2012 3.8 + Tech is $36,653 NEW (in North Jersey). So they can definitely do better on the price.

As for buying a loaner, that's up to you. Loaners are typically driven like rental cars (ie: hard). But 5k on the odo isn't terrible...should only be like 10k normal miles:D

It's priced way high. You can buy a brand new 2013 from Luther Hyundai for $34,650. Anything over $30,000 is too much.

It's a year old, used car they are trying to sell you. Print out Luther's page and tell them to do some more figuring.

I checked the web site and the 34,650 is for the base 2013 with no nav and the 7 speaker low end sound system. The 2012 the op is looking at is with tech premuim pkg with nav and much better sound system and sun roof.

I couldn't figure out what the options are on the $34,650 car, but it has an MSRP of $40,025------------so it's not the base model. They also show a 3.8 Genesis (2013) for $39,010 that had an MSRP of $44,385-------which would have to have both optional packages.

Again, I don't think that $34,000 for a used, year-old car 3.8 Genesis is a good deal.

Their $34,650 cars are the 3.8 with the Premium package. That is a $5,200 discount from the Hyundai USA web site's published MSRP. Pretty decent for a start. Their equivalent car is $39,010 for a 3.8 with the Technology package. That is a $5,185 discount from the published MSRP. The OP is quoting an offer that is an additional $5K below these prices.

So, assess the value of a prior model year car with a few months use that has never been titled. Is that worth $1/mile? Sounds like a pretty good value to me.

The OP should just put it into carsdirect or other online car shopper for his local area. Considering one could buy a new (leftover) 2012 for only ~$600 more than his quoted price without even haggling, that's obviously not a good deal.

I realize I'm in a more populated area than Duluth that likely sales more Gennys, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't get a fair price.

I totally agree. If the OP could find a brand new 2012 3.8 Tech Package for $34,600, that is a no-brainer.

I've been accused of having a small mind, but never that I've had 'no brain.' :)

I used TrueCar, and got the same ~$34,600 price quoted, but then called the dealership (Conyers Hyundai) and checked their website... no dice... the car didn't exist...

Thanks again to all who contributed.

Yup, that is exactly what I expected. You used your brain to demonstrate that there is a big difference between fact and Internet lore. You have a great offer on the table. I love the comments that loaners are "driven hard." Based on what data?

I might be in the minority, but... when I drove a 2012 4.6 loaner a couple weeks back, I drove it like my car: I was mostly easy on it.

When I get a loaner/rental...I don't typically drive stupid with it;) But since it's not mine, I like to see what it can do:D
