Sunroof - creaking and groaning at slow speeds

3-4 weeks ago I noticed rather pronounced creaking and groaning from the sunroof. Rear passenger side. Had the car in today for 30k service and asked about it.

I was surprised to learn it’s not a warranty item, and would be ~$500 to disassemble and retighten the frame and mounting.

Had anyone experience this and had it covered under warranty?

It's covered under bumper to bumper. Had the shop fail to fix mine 3 times before I hit that 60k

From everything I'm reading it seems to be a design flaw rather than a fixable item. Like to hear from those who have actually had it fix permanently (if they are to be found!).
The creaks I get in the car are all to do with the weather so far - at least that's what I'm telling myself. After a good warmup they definitely dissipate.

I have a 2016 (now known as the G80) and can tell you it is annoying as heck. Happens in cold weather only. Had the car in for a week a year ago to fix it and now it is back. Poor quality materials on a brand that wants to be known as luxurious to compete with MB, BMW, and Audi, bet their sunroofs do not squeak. But I must say, the rest of the car is very nice. New lease prices are outrageous and I may have to shop another brand for better value.

Every car maker with a panoramic roof has had problems. It is a nifty looking roof, but not the best idea from an engineering point. I think you will see them fade away in the future.

Most dealers just lubricate the surrounding frame pieces. I gave my dealer a bad survey rating and Genesis customer service called me and had them take it back and fix it by replacing the glass panel. Little did I know that the creak would come back in the cold weather. By contrast, 2 Nissan Rogues my Wife has driven have not had any issues.go figure.

I had mine adjusted and it's better than before but still there especially over railroad crossings or in very cold weather but I can live with it at this point. I also had the same problem with my last Sonata and they actually were able to fix it completely but they had to replace the entire pano roof. Not just the assembly, they had an engineer come from Hyundai and one from the company that makes the pano roof and after multiple days of adjusting the original pano they replaced the entire unit at the dealer and it was dead silent from then on. I think they only did this since they were using my car to test new rails and seals trying to fix this issue and it was in the shop for so long they just gave up and replaced it. While I was happy that they fixed the roof issue having that done caused other issues in the interior causing the headliner and piller panels to start squeaking which they then had to be replaced as well. From what I remember my dealer told me that the cost to replace the roof panel was over $10k so it’s not something that they want to do and I wouldn’t want to risk doing that again with the Genesis only to have them mess up something else.

I have the rattle on the front driver's side of the pano sunroof on my '15 Ultimate, and the dealer lubed the sunroof rails, to no avail.

I have discovered 2 things about my sunroof's noise: 1) it ceases when I close the sunshade, and 2) With the sunshade open but the sunroof closed, the noise stops when I reach up and grasp the metal frame and pull down on it.

There's a little bit of flex in the rail, and I think the rattle could be fixed with some strategically placed wedges of some sort.

I haven't attempted this fix yet because I'm worried that it will mess with the smooth operation of the sunroof.

The dealer wants to replace the sunroof frame, but from what I've read on this forum, that's a temporary solution at best.

Man so much hate on the pano roof, car brand has nothing to do with it. Go check BMW or Merc forums anything with a moveable glass roof will subject to some issue sooner or later.

My 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Tech developed the pano roof creak and groan at 18K miles. Rear passenger side. Then it went away on its own for a while. It appeared intermittently after that. By 30K it was creaking with a vengeance over bumps (i.e., all SoCal roads and freeways, due to lack of any maintenance in our formerly Golden State). Opening and closing the roof would help temporarily. More noticeable in colder temperatures. As the lease was soon to end, I didn’t fuss about it.

Word is the later models have less of it. We will see. Just returned the leased 2016 at 38K and bought a new 2019 G80 Sport.

The pano roof is most definitely a warranty item.

word on later models is likely wrong.. the creaking started in mine with the cold weather here over the past 2 months, it only occurs with the sunshade retracted, regardless if the roof is open or not, which leads me to believe it is the shade mechanism, not the pano roof itself.

when the car goes in for it's next scheduled service I will have it looked at, it isn't annoying enough yet to warrant a separate trip.

My first impression is that it's actually the front passenger seat that has something loose underneath. I haven't been a passenger in my own car yet (will try it this weekend), but that should help me figure out if it's the seat or sunroof.

I also hear a creak coming from the passenger side when going over bumps, I'm pretty confident mine is from the sunroof though. I accidentally opened the glass instead of the shade and it's been a little more noisy since then, although the shade does a decent job of muffling the sound.

There's a shop nearby that specializes in sunroofs and interiors so I'll probably have them take a look before I subject myself to the dealership experience again. I'll report back if they manage to fix it...

Despite them not fixing it the last two times I had them look at it (when it was under warranty). Its funny that they warranty the work they do in the service shop for 12 months/12k but ONLY if its not covered under warranty.

This basically allows them to push off fixing the issue correctly while its under warranty. Then charge you for it after that. We'll see what happens when they get back to me.

Not necessarily. If it was reported and not fixed you may still be covered. I've done that with other cars in the past.

Primarily occurs with body flex. They have a new TSB for the rails creaking, where they just grease them up. But that did nothing for my issue.

Going through the escalation process to involve corp. Not expecting a whole lot, but I'm not going to ignore it. Hyundai, BMW, Lexus, doesnt matter. Still unacceptable for a car in this class.

Doesn't leave much hope for a perm fix on my 2015 especially with it being out of warrenty. I am reading with the 2018s they have replaced them.
