  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Was driving around in my '15 5.0 enjoying the nice weather with the roof fully open. Stopped at the store and tried to shut it only to listen to the motor slowing down and finally reversing 1/2 way through the stroke. I kept playing with it was was able to help it along with my hand and finally got her shut. Came home and started messing with it. It appears to open fine and at normal speed...although it seems like it might not be opening quite all the way??? But closing is a slow, painful, struggle and it won't shut unless I help it along...and even then most of the time the motor trips some current/force/heat limit and opens back up.

I tried the calibration sequence and it will not complete. It's even more messed up than before as the rear tilt is broke, just opens and shuts again.

There is still white grease in the visible part of the tracks and I would lube the whole thing up again but it's so tight I am not sure how I would go about it.

Anyone else been through this???

That isn't the motor. There is actually some kind of binding happening on the rails. No adjustment can fix it. I had the same problem on mine. Luckily I caught it before 60k miles and the work was done for free. If I'd have had to pay for it it was going to be almost $1k.

The sunroof is only covered under the 12mo/12k mile adjustment warranty. It's left to dealership discretion whether or not they charge to repair it. I have to pay for mine ($40) to put it back on track and that was with less than 40k miles. Get in their good graces and you may not pay. They are not obligated to cover your repair. Crappy, I know...

I hope it's an easy fix.

My 2015 did same thing last month. Took it in and they lubed up all tracks etc and now all works fine.

Mine was having similar problem closing & required lubrication after I bought it used last January. Dealer took care of it & no problems since.

They tried lubing it apparently and it didn't fix. But, who knows. Maybe because they knew it was under Warranty they just did a replacement. There is one bad part of my story. I ride with the shade open almost 100% of the time. Of course I closed it and opened it a few times when I first got it fixed and I didn't notice anything. Last month I closed it and noticed the shade does not meet 100% closed. There is a SUPER tiny sliver of open that I can see if I put my head directly under the middle of the shade. I don't know if this will bother me long term, but since my car is going to be so cheap when it is time to sell it, I imagine little things like that will take money off my asking price. Now it's too late to ask them to fix it.

i just had this done - same exact issue. Apparently my tracks were bent and replaced under warranty. I was well outside of the 12k/12 month, guessing it fell into the 5yr/50k

Mine had same issue last summer, binding and would not close. Two lube visits to the dealer later, problem has not reoccurred.

Interesting info from all. I wonder why lube would help if it only binds on closing? Maybe I will take another look at putting in some lube myself...otherwise I will take it in early next year.

I fear I'm close to having to return to dealer for a second time to deal with a sticky sunroof. The first time they said the grease was "dried out" so they greased the tracks. The other night I hit the close button and as I was driving along I realized the roof was again struggling to close up. UGH.

Luckily it closed because we were about to have a big rainstorm.

FWIW, I had to make two trips to dealer for "lube" of a struggling sunroof. Since the second visit, no further issues 1+ years later.

Welp sunroof problem with closing has returned, at the dealer this week. Will report back with resolution.

It does on mine.... I try to cycle mine a couple of times a month to spread out the lube. Still, I end up lubing it quarterly-ish. I have to "help" it close when it seems to "dry up". Lube it & it's fine.

2015 Genesis,I had a slow-closing sunroof, sometimes struggling to close but finally, it is not closing and reverse back to open position, tried to close several times but failed. it just passed 60,000 miles, so am I out of luck paying for my laziness to address it during the warranty period?
It looks like a very commonly known issue for this model, does anyone know Hyundai has any kind of extended warranty or special service for this matter?

No, only for shattering the glass. You can probably find information here about lubricating the mechanism though..
Shattering glass is covered 10 years or 120,000 miles, even for second owner.
