  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Bought new genesis 3.8 ultimate on 11/30/15. Was driving on the expressway on Saturday 1/16/16 around 5:20pm when there was a loud noise, the wind started to shake the headliner, and little pieces of glass started to fall in the passenger compartment. We stopped and realized that our sunroof had exploded. The outside temperature was around 30 degrees, and we were driving at about 65 miles per hour.

Called the dealer on Monday 1/18 and was told that it would take one week to get a replacement sunroof, called again on Friday 1/22 and was told replacement is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday 1/26. Car cannot be driven and is sitting in our garage. We hope the repair will be covered by the warranty. According to the internet, there is a class action suit against Hyundai about other Hyundai models having this problem, I found only one other posting about this happening to a Genesis 2015.

Why would you think for even 1 second that it would not be covered on a car that is only a few months old (unless you think something hit your car - then it's an insurance claim)? Sucks, btw!

Was yours a 2015 or 2016?

wow, that must be scary. I would assume this would be covered by warranty, if not I would argue the point.

Apparently this can happen randomly from a variety of causes such as an invisible defect in the glass, scratches, or obviously if something hit the sunroof in the right manner. Knock wood, I've never had a sunroof break in any car I've owned but have heard about it from time to time.

Been there and experienced that, with my previous car, a CTS.

The panoramic glass was struck by some foreign object. Probably a small rock or chunk of metal that got slung upwards from a truck tire and then came down to strike the glass. I've seen the same thing happen to windshields.

Shattered all over me at about 65mph. Does get your attention.
But... sch!tt happens.

If the glass panels were laminated it wouldn't all come down on top of the occupants. I was still finding small fragments of glass 5 years later.

Thanks for the links - edges of broken glass are pointing upwards, to me that indicates an explosion. The dealer may decide otherwise.

it also happens to chrysler and mercedes.

but I dont think its ever happened to lexus

This also happened to my '92 Ford Explored (about 6 months after I bought it (in 1992). Quite a surprise!

Got my car back yesterday. it took a little over one week to get the part, and a couple of days to have the car fixed. The service manager at Regional Hyundai in Tulsa was very helpful, and he got Hyundai to approve the repair under the warranty program. While at the dealer, we noticed that there are many scratches caused by flying glass on the top of the trunk lid. A few went through the paint and exposed the metal underneath. The service manager is contacting Hyundai to find out if they will authorize him to have the trunk lid repainted. Although I am very upset about what happened to my brand new car, i must say that i am also very pleased with the way Hyundai took responsibility and fixed the damage without any hassles.

I did find an additional complaint about the same problem. So there have been at least three such incidents with the 2015 Genesis so far.

I have never opened the sunroof on my Genny purchased exactly 1 yr ago - because I have always assumed they would be nothing but trouble thereafter.

I have always considered them to be a form of fraud - kind of like add on nitrogen for tires at $600 a pop (4, that is) which I have seen.

I recently had to pay just under $1K to have the track on my sunroof replaced. But, after 4 years of use, who's to complain? It was 68 in sunny Jax today, and I really enjoyed cruising around with the windows down and the sunroof wide open. Almost as enjoyable as a rag-top with the fabric down.

I've been looking at Jag. F-type convertibles - but the inventory in No. Va is poor. I think that would be maybe better than the Genny with the sunroof open.

How is a sunroof "fraud"? In nice weather I have it open every chance I get. It does exactly what I expect - lets air in when it's nice, keeps everything out when it's not. I've had sunroofs in my cars since 2001 without issues.

By the way, if you think a sunroof is trouble wait until something goes wrong with the Jag's convertible top - be prepared to bleed money! :-)

It's one of many overpriced "add-ons" that are installed on cars to make money. I.e., if you want the car, you take the junk that comes with it - like it or not.

Issues? The many posts/threads on this forum would indicate that the Genesis sunroof, in particular, is a nightmare - why I never use it.

When I bought my 2016 3.8 the first thing I said was "I don't want a sunroof". The only way to get "No Sunroof" is to get a Base car, no options. The first thing listed on the Signature package is "Power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof". If you don't get the signature package, you don't get any options. I think the sunroof should be a separate option for the people that like them and not forced on the people that don't like them.
That is why I got the BASE car.

Passing on options to NOT get a sunroof seems extreme to me. How about just keeping the sunroof and shade closed, and enjoying the options??

Getting a sunroof just to get some options seems extreme to me. For instance, read the tidal of this thread. There are other threads about sunroof problems. I have had too many cars with sunroofs in the past and know they cause a lot of problems. I know I would never use it so why would I want it?

To each his own.

No arguments from me! Although I think the weather in No. Va. doesn't exactly favor convertibles, especially after last week!!

The plano-roof version, maybe.
