  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof exploded

Passing on options to NOT get a sunroof seems extreme to me. How about just keeping the sunroof and shade closed, and enjoying the options??

Exactly the route that I took - Actually, you got no choice. Keep that sucker closed.

The last time I bought a car when you could actually do line-item custom selections was in 1990 when I bought a 1991 Buick - You could basically have the car "custom made" and it was delivered in 3 weeks as ordered.

As I recall, there were maybe 20-30 items that could be custom selected - great way to buy a car.

I am at least halfway serious about buying an F-type Jaguar conv. You run into the same problems there. The base price is around $70K, but the bull**** options push the price up to around $100K in the local inventories.

And, yes, I do know the problems with convertibles - I have owned them before, and some problems come with the territory - but at least you know what you are getting into - no exploding sunroofs!

Never had a sunroof problem until i noticed this thread has no pictures

picture as requested - you might notice that the right and left corners of the sunroof facing the rear of the car are a little below the stationary section of the glass roof. The replacement sunroof is now perfectly even with the stationary section of the glass roof. I wonder if it possible that the original sunroof did not close correctly and that the resulting stress eventually broke the glass.

Looks like a meterorite dropped right in.

Seriously, these things are meant to fail - they are right in the center on top - exposed to heat, cold, snow, sleet, rain, and the occasional meteorite.

I wish I didn't have one, but it was part of an otherwise very desirable car.

Ouch...sorry for the bad luck and knock on wood these are isolated incidents. Glad you were able to get it fixed relatively fast.

I've had mixed experiences in prior cars (I had a sunshade malfunction on a large panoramic roof, but glass and seals have held up fine - I used the sunroof daily in southern CA. Two other cars I have had zero iasues). The Genesis was too appealing to me to worry about the roof and a base model wasn't going to do it for me. Knowing that there are many issues, I do wonder how much I will end up using mine once the temps warm up.

Wow - those panels should be required to be laminated, shatterproof glass just like all the glass in the car. Imagine if the shade was open when that roof exploded and those shards rained down on you!

And somebody picked on me because I was (wishfully) thinking about getting a little red Jaguar Type F Convertible.

Convertibles ain't got no problems like this - although there was that nice little blonde chick once - Uh-Oh -- forget I said that.

I wonder if you could apply a tough plastic film to the inside of the glass so if it exploded the shards would just stay in place? This would be like laminated glass without the inside glass.

Still, I have had Hyundai sunroofs since 2001 without a problem and I use them daily in nice weather, so I'll take my chances...

That's a little overly dramatic - they are not meant to fail. The OP either had a material defect or something hit his roof.

My issue with the panoramic roof on the 2015 was that it was noisy at times - otherwise, it's a really nice feature. I'm concerned it might be a design flaw that causes that noise in an otherwise pretty quiet car.

I've had plenty of sunroofs over the years and never had any noise from any of them, but this is the first pano roof. The Tesla Model S has a similar roof (and might even be made by the same sub) - hard to believe those buyers would accept rattles and creaks, so maybe something is wrong on the install on some cars or an issue with the Hyundai-specific parts?

Given the location & exposure to the elements + a little vibration, I'd say failure of one sort or another - and that includes noise - is inevitable.

Just give that sucker time.

Sorry - i would not call noise a failure in that sense as equating noise to a shattered roof is a little much. The noise is an annoyance and a defect - a shattered roof is a failure with potential safety implications.

That said, I wish they had just given the Genesis a large conventional sunroof instead of the pano roof. As i stated in another post, the lack of a pano roof on the G90 might be telling us something?

I would not - and did not - equate a noisy sunroof with a shattered sunroof.

Once again, I would repeat that they are going to be - almost certainly - a source of problems for a variety of obvious reasons. Garaging the car might help.

As an engineer for a little over 3 decades in my former life, I am not so forgiving as some might be relative to bad designs.

I have a 2015 Hyundai Genesis V8 Ultimate. My sunroof exploded yesterday afternoon 4/15/2018 while driving on the Freeway at about 70mph. Huge explosion. Just like described by the previous poster. Scratched up my trunk lid. Kearney Mesa Hyundai checking to see if it will be covered by warranty.

Sorry to hear that Frank. I hope they fix it soon under warranty for you!

umm, this sounds sketchy. I drive highway a lot, and I hear rocks bounce off it sometimes.

My '15 Ultimate was one of the 3 other instances of this happening that you found.

My situation was almost exactly the same: sub-freezing temp, 65 mph on an expressway with no other vehicles or people around to throw anything, and I had to get my trunk lid repainted as well.

Scary? Yes, I had to pry the leather seating surface out of my sphincter.

Hyundai has agreed to cover the sunroof damage under the warranty.

Exactly why don't like pana roofs (aside from being more prone to shatter, adds weight, while robbing headroom and structural integrity) and think it should be a stand-alone option.

Pretty much every automaker that offers pana roofs has had issues.
