  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof exploded

Hyundai has agreed to cover the sunroof damage under the warranty.

That looks like it was blown out, maybe high cabin pressure I don't know I'm not a scientist but def interesting to see why it did that, or what set of circumstances made that happen.

Mine shattered during a hailstorm.

The glass measured out with a micrometer at 1/6 inch - not much

I've never used the sunroof on my cars and that may be why I don't have noise probs.

its tempered glass right so if any road debris that hits it and scratch it enough it will just shatter.

Same thing happened on Friday-4/20/18. freeway-75mph-48F. sunroof exploded for no apparent reason. broken glass scratched the trunk lid. Hyundai will cover under warranty..

man so should I have the cover closed while I'm driving, this is sketchy.

Happened in my BMW a few years back, and BMW refused to cover under warranty. They said a rock got thrown up from car in front of me and shattered it. I then quickly became a "mythbuster" and looked into the science behind such a claim, and quickly discovered it is utter BS. What actually happens, when rocks or stones hit your car on the highway is that the object gets picked up by a tire tread and is then released, by centrifugal force, inside the tire well. It bounces around inside the tire well and then drops down to the pavement and assumes the same velocity, relative to the pavement, as the car that picked it up. It then starts to skid on the pavement and gets kicked up by friction with the pavement surface (imagine skipping a small stone across a parking lot). While this happens, the object loses velocity (friction) and the difference in velocity between the object, and the car that hits it, becomes the impact velocity. Since the rocks/stones don't bounce very high, and move more or less parallel to the pavement, most of the impacts are against the vertical surfaces of the car, mainly the front grille/bumper, front of hood, and windshield. That's why most of this type of damage is to those surfaces. However, there rarely are ever any paint chips on car roofs, since the surface is horizontal and fairly parallel to the trajectory of the stone. A small stone "tossed" across the pavement by a car going 60-80 mph simply cannot gain enough altitude to do damage to a roof, if it were to hit it, because it would have to bounce hundreds of feet high in order to gain enough velocity (through gravity) to do damage to the horizontal roof surface. BMW still did not honor the warranty even after hearing such compelling arguments :). That pissed me off and almost made me sell the car. I should have, but that's another story.

BTW, the glass fails because it is fairly thin and tempered, is under high tensile stress, invariably has inclusions (failure points), and is exposed to high temperature cycles (warm-cold-warm...) that cause fatigue. The failure area is almost always near the center of the panel, and the remaining glass is left bulging outwards, caused by the tensile stresses on the top surface.

My sun roof exploded today 6/28/18 while I was in the interstate. The noise scared me to death! I’m very thankful that it was closed or I would have been injured.

Jesus, glad your okay first of all. But do you recollect anything out of the ordinary before it went? I have my sunshade open all the time now I'm scared.

No I was just cruising down the road in no real hurry and bam! A loud noise came out of no where. I didn’t know what to make of it. I was so shaken up and on the verge of tears as I was alone. To be honest I’m a little frightened myself when they do fix it that it will happen again. The material on the roof is not a good barrier and I’m lucky the glass did not go down where I was sitting.

Wow, that is crazy! Was it really hot out with AC on low or anything try to see if there is any correlation to all the ones that have exploded.

I had the AC on 73 inside the car on medium and it was approximately 93 degrees outside.

Bought new genesis 3.8 ultimate on 11/30/15. Was driving on the expressway on Saturday 1/16/16 around 5:20pm when there was a loud noise, the wind started to shake the headliner, and little pieces of glass started to fall in the passenger compartment. We stopped and realized that our sunroof had exploded. The outside temperature was around 30 degrees, and we were driving at about 65 miles per hour.

Called the dealer on Monday 1/18 and was told that it would take one week to get a replacement sunroof, called again on Friday 1/22 and was told replacement is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday 1/26. Car cannot be driven and is sitting in our garage. We hope the repair will be covered by the warranty. According to the internet, there is a class action suit against Hyundai about other Hyundai models having this problem, I found only one other posting about this happening to a Genesis 2015.
Just happened to me this weekend. Got in the car, closed the door normally, heard a “pop” and the sunroof shattered... glass all through the headliner. Will await Hyundai reaction.

That really sucks MJL_SJ. I hope there are no issues with getting it taken care of by the mfg.

They should make it a federal requirement for all car sunroofs to use laminated glass. I'm tired and done of hearing stories of when peoples sunroofs shattered spontaneously and fall into their eyes while driving.

The sunroof should atleast be covered both sides with film . That will keep atleadt some glass from coming inside car when it shatters .

Safety first always .... this is an accident waiting to happen .

I would think that this would be covered by insurance. They cover windshields.
When I leased my 2018 G80 the first thing on the want list was NO SUNROOF. It narrowed
it down to a base car. Did I want a base car? NO. Did I want an ultimate? YES. What did I end up with? the base. I hate sunroofs that much. If I wanted to see the sky while driving I would have a convertible with either a folding hard top or a cloth top. I just wish Genesis would realize not every one wants a $2000.00 piece of glass over their heads when driving.

I don't hate them but find the fairly useless. Most of the summer the shade is closed. The glass is never opened. I just think it is part of the cost to drive an ultimate but could do without it.

As already mention, wrapping it would go a long way to prevent glass shatter if it explodes. If done at the factory the cost would be minimal for a bit of protection.
