  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Seel Peeling

that wasn't very nice of your rep. Maybe call his bluff and actually complain to the BBB. The service man at my location tried to tell me my seal looked the same as a normal one on the lot....I was like really??? no.... he said he tried to push mine back up...I guess he thought it just snapped in. I was like...no...its adhesive that holds it and that has failed.

as long as mine doesn't break or leak water, I'm not too concerned about it.

but I would like it documented that I told them before it ever became a major issue.

the more people that complain and document it....the more attention it will get....negative or positive.....and I highly doubt they will want the BBB to know over and over and over again.

I'm going to keep using my sunroof as much as I feel like using it. if the seal breaks or it leaks water or gets horribly bad....Hyundai will have to fix it.....that's why its got a warranty.

Does you state have a Lemon law, Texas does.

...I'm not looking for a fix, I just want it documented so that Hyundai is aware and will issue a properly researched, permanent fix...

I am in agreement with you. I let me service advisor know as well but want to wait until it is covered under a recall or at least a Technical Service Bulletin so they show the proper method of repair to the mechanics.

The mechanics will have a tough time performing such a task. That's why they don't want to do anything, too expensive!

When I went to the dealership, its funny, because all the sales reps "HAVE NO CLUE" that they are selling these cars on the lot with this seel issue. And, if they know about the issue, would they inform a potential customer...?

Also, unless you love and baby your car, something like this might go unnoticed. It's not like the tire issue where you feel it on the road everytime you drive. Or the taillight/transmission issue, which if something did occur it would be all over the web because its involves driving and the potential risk for an accident. I'm 6 feet 2 inches and wash my car by hand. I can see this seel from my vantage point. Others may not... Also...I didn't know it until I read about it on the forum. Sure alot of people are just unaware.

This issue is cosmetic and Hyundai really just wants people not to notice. I'm sure they fixed it for the 2016s (one would hope), but for us early adapters its going to be a fight. The white Genesis I saw on the lot 2 weeks ago... not there when I went to pick up my car Saturday. Was it sold? Did they take it to a repair shop to try and fix it? It had the worst peel on the Genesis lot, so maybe Hyuandai is only fixing the worst cases?

I will be contacting BBB soon. Plus this ECS issue... My car has been at the dealership 6 weeks in the last 6 months. Dropping it off again today... They know me well, probably tired of me :0

In most states (and under federal law - depending on your issues), you have a right to remedy under the lemon law with it being 6 weeks out of service. Hyundai either has to replace your vehicle with a new one, or provide you a full refund. There's no reason you need to be a field tester for them.

BBB is usually the first step in many states that have arbitration requirements. You should share that email you got from the warranty manager - doesn't sound professional at all.

Yes, after 6 weeks of down time, I would certainly be looking at what the threshold is in your state for it to be considered a lemon.

So I noticed that no one has written to this thread in a while. This morning I saw the dreaded peel/tear. I was wondering if anyone got this resolved satisfactorily?:(

Eventually every one of these cars will have this problem. Best you can do is report it and get Hyundai's attention on it.

I reported it and as long as I don't see water leaking in I'm going to wait for a proper response from Hyundai after more users report the problem to them.

Thanks for the update. I will bring it into the dealer, but it seems like they will not know what to do with this issue.

I brought mine in for the rear panel gasket peeling (and a few other items) - the dealer agreed that it's a defect and is ordering a new gasket and said they'll have pull the panel to install - will take anout 10 days to get the new gadket in, so it must not be stocked in the USA. I'll ask how many they've seen with this issue when I bring it back for the replacement.

They tried fixing mine twice. Not satisfactory... Hyundai's excuse is that this is NORMAL wear and tare... I kinda got tired of the issue...

It's such an expensive fix for Hyundai, not as simple as replacing 4 tires. AND... it's more of a cosmetic concern. If you don't wash your car or are under 6 feet, might not ever notice it...

Most people are just unaware of what's going on, on their exterior roof as they drive day to day. The fix Hyundai performed, peeling again...

It's will happen to EVERY 2015 Hyundai Genesis eventually. I guarentee it! Only thing you can do is inform others to report the issue. I get so many looks at my car. It is beautiful. But i tell everyone i meet to WAIT for the 2016 edition. Just being truthful!

Hence the reason I asked the other poster if there was a TSB out on it. I have seen brand new Genesis on the lot not yet sold with this very same issue so Hyundai stating that it is normal wear is BS.

I am not allowing my dealer to touch it (they know about it) until there is a TSB out to hopefully fix it permanently. I don't have my hopes up that will ever come. I think it is just designed completely wrong and a fix would be a major one.

One good thing, it doesn't seem to leak (yet) so that is a plus.

can you post some pictures so i know what to watch for.

The Optima/Sonata has had the rubber gasket issue on their panoramic sunroof as well and there's quite a few of them on the road. One would think Hyundai would designed an adhesive or something that would bond this seal permantly.

Had the same issue with it peeling off. Took it in and dealer tried to talk me out of doing it as it was so involved to rip car apart, said to just remove it as it doesn't matter for water infiltration. I said fix it, they ordered out parts had glass place do work on it and it lasted about 2 weeks. Waited about a 9 months and took to a different dealer. They contacted Hyundai and were told to replace the seal. Manager also said Hyundai was aware of the issue. That repair lasted from the night I picked it up until the next morning. Went back they took pics of it and came back and said Hyundai said to replace fixed panel with new one with seal already on it. They ordered it did the job and so far so good. The seal on the new one looks perfect. Something I also noticed was that now the moveable part just barely and I mean barely contacts it instead of before where it was trying to pull it loose in the closed position. They also set the fixed panel so perfect that the creaking noise stopped too. Hopefully It holds up.

hamrules, sounds like you're the first one to have the entire glass section replaced. Hopefully that is the last repair to it that will be needed.

Sounds like Hyundai killed two issues with one fix. They are trying the quick fix and it is not working. I would say those buying a car with a more recent build date (June/July 2015) just might have no noise or peeling issues.

That would be an expense recall to replace all the sunroofs as just about every car on my dealers lot has this issue. I am leaving mine as is for now until they either develop a quick fix or actually submit a recall.

I've got a Genesis produced in 2015 and have not seen any issues with the seal. I also looked around the lot where I purchased and all seemed ok. Maybe they are implementing this fix at the factory?
