  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Surround sound

Just got my 2012 3.8L with the Tech and Premium packages this week and I'm having the unchecked surround sound issue also. I'm unhappy about and will insist on a fix at my first oil change.

My concern is the dealer will say the system is working as designed and they won't fix it.

If the Dealer states that then copy and bring him in some of these pages where others Dealer's has ordered them another head unit to correct the issue and there is an issue per Jon McMuller from the makers of Lexicon Genney sound systems, earlier in this thread by my posting. My Dealer said my unit should be here end of November.

I will attest to or nay if the surround sould stays checked for all sources between starts & time spanning at least 12hrs once the new unit is installed. The 5 to 6 sound surround sources, once they have been already previously checked, only to reazile that after the next ignition start up to 12 hrs all surround sound checks have yet again become unchecked bypassing customer input choices. Only the last source used if it had the surround sound box checked will retain said setting as checked, the rest will not. This is THE issue loud and clear to TPTB.

In my 2012 4.6, sometimes the surround sound does not remain checked when the last source used was the DVD player and I change discs on the DVD player the next day (first sound source used). It will be interesting to see if they say that that is how the system is designed. Still trying to determine how often this happens.

One more confirmation on this issue. Just had the radio replaced and Surround Sound stays checked. :D
PS- There must be a lot of radios on order. Mine took 4 months on back order. I was told it's normally a week.

My 2012 Genesis sedan with tech and nav packages regularly unchecks the surround sound feature after a day or two of driving. My problem is that the dealer will not do anything about it unless I can demonstrate the unchecking to him, but since there is no specific time when this happens, I am at a loss how to prove to him that it does happen. Any suggestions?

Welcome to this great forum. You are not alone. The surround uncheck issue plagues many of these cars. I'm guessing most people don't even realize they have the problem. If they did Hyundai's reputation would take a serious hit. Others here have reported the surround uncheck occurs either within one hour after the engine is shut off or after the engine remains off overnight. Determine exactly long it takes for your problem to occur. My Genesis unchecked every time--it was not an intermittent problem.

If your surround unchecks after one hour or overnight you'll need to leave the car at the dealership for them to replicate the problem. And they will be able to do that easily. My dealer told me the only way to fix the problem was to replace the head unit and that's what they did.

Now I'll make a long story short. They have replaced my head unit 3 times and my sound quality went from great to awful. Each head unit was a rebuild and came with other problems. Supposedly I have a new one now. I'm waiting for their engineer to call me but I'm about ready to call their hotline number and raise the roof.

Proceed with caution. You shouldn't have to settle for a radio that doesn't work correctly but things could get worse.

You say your sound quality keeps getting worse. Can you describe what happened?

Surround stays checked as long as you stay on the same source. Shutoff car with the XM source checked and it will stay checked but FM or CD will be unchecked. Shutoff the car with the CD source and now XM will be unchecked.

A simple nuisance

You say your sound quality keeps getting worse. Can you describe what happened?

1) The quality of sound isn't nearly as crisp or clear as it used to be. This applies pretty much to all sources but especially XM and FM.

2) Before when I turned on the surround sound, I could hear a noticeable improvement in sound quality. Now turning on the surround sound barely makes a difference in the sound. I always leaves the surround sound on.

I'm not an audiophile by any means. But my radio used to sound great. Now it sounds like a 2005 Toyota Tercel radio. Hopefully the Hyundai Field Engineer will call me and agree to listen to my radio with me. He allegedly heard it before and said everything is working as designed.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Have the dealer run the software update for your HU as per TSB 12-BE-012-1. It should fix the surround sound ON/OFF issue along with audio system mute at engine start up.
Another solution is have simplicitysound modify you system to convert it from 7.1 surround sound to regular stereo only. That way you won't have to worry about whether surround is on or off. Should only cost about $20,000.

Do you have any tech docs on this TSB? I can't seem to find it at hmaservice.com. I'm taking my R-Spec in for service next week and I'd love to have this done.

That TSB is not for 2012 Genesis, that's why you can't find it in hmaservice.com

I'm still waiting for my dealer to receive the discs with the software updates. It's been two months

Well, that's mildly depressing. Thanks.

How about when you amp quits for 1/2 hour and you try everything and it won't work and then it starts working again. That was no sound at all on any modes.

After reading all the messages concerning the unchecking of surround sound, I can see that it is a frequent problem with Genesis owners. I have 2012 Genesis with both optional packages and love the car. the only problem is the unchecking which in my case happens every couple of days. I wrote to Hyundai and spoke both to the people at the dealership, but their lack of willingness to help was rather disappointing. Since it is an intermittant problem and I am not able to demostrate it in front of them, they hide behind this fact and refuse to do anything about it.
I know that they are competing against the Lexus (I also own a LS400 Lexus) and I must say that their lack of willingness to help with the problem shows that Hyundai has a way to go to reach the level of Lexus customer service.

"I must say that their lack of willingness to help with the problem shows that Hyundai has a way to go to reach the level of Lexus customer service."

Yep...let's hope this changes. Can anyone doubt that Hyundai is well aware of this "surround unchecking/no audio" issue? So what does Hyundai do? It certainly appears not nearly enough. Maybe it's a cost issue as in its eaiser to ignore this issue than to suffer the loss of revenue to correct it. Well this issue will certainly play a part in the next car I buy. Buying Hyundai was a leap for me and if this is the level of service we receive then the next time I will return to the old guard.

For all of you having issues, have any of you had the latest software installed? There are a few threads around about it. The first software update crashed some of teh systems, but the updated release works. I had it done to my car and no isues at all with the surround sound unchecking and so far, the system has not gone silent on me. I don't have the TSb off the top of my head but I know it's posted on here somewhere, you just need the latest one which has a -1 on the end of it.

Edit:
Here's the thread I started on it.
