Tech "Lock Outs" while moving?

Pretty close to pulling the trigger on a 2011 Genesis 4.6 Sedan. One thing I wanted to ask... In my G35, there is a lockout on a lot of the tech functionality while the car is moving. If I want to use the Nav, I have to enter everything in before I start moving. I have XM traffic, but I can't scroll through lists of accidents, etc while I'm moving. It also has a hard drive based music box function, which again, can't easily be used while moving, making it virtually useless. Luckily the iPod interface is NOT locked down while moving, so I've had something to work with.

I can understand locking down DVD video while moving, but the rest? Just wanted to check on the Genesis. I'm guessing this is not a problem or I would have found some complaints.

We use the nav, phone, cd, usb, xm, am, and fm all while moving. manual or by voice commands. When you do make the purchase read and study the manuals thoroughly, its easier if you download the PDF of the manuals from Hyundai for quicker reference.

When the transmission is moved out of "Park" on Tech cars:

1: any video playing (DVD or from the sub-mini jack in the console) is blanked; a message displays saying video is disabled when the vehicle is in motion. Audio continues to play however.

2: the seat/mirror/steering wheel position memory buttons do not operate. The controls to manually move the seat, mirrors, and steering wheel continue to function normally though - just the memory save/restore is disabled.

3: a few of the car settings menus get disabled... places where you enter preferences, ON/OFF default flags, etc. No big deal.

Nav functions continue to work normally - you can type in destinations (or use voice commands), zoom in/out of the screen, scroll through your addresses, points of interest, etc. XM NavTraffic functions also continue to work normally. All main cell phone menus work normally too; I can't think of any that are disabled. Radio functions, including setting memory/presets, work normally too.

Not to try to discourage you dlambermont because I do believe the Genesis sedan to be a great car for the money but in all fairness to Infiniti I beg to differ with you on some aspects of the G35 as I’ve had one since 2007 and my wife presently drives a 2011 Genesis. So in this situation I feel I have some insight into the character on both cars and the relative differences between them. I feel as I’ve said before in another reply that the G35s navigation system to be superior to the Genesis especially considering the system is 4 years old now. Yes there are restrictions placed into the system as you mentioned but for example the traffic interface is much better (at least in my car) . For example when on a predetermined route is set and a traffic situation arises on route the G will ping and bring up a screen advising of the incident and asking if I care to alter route if I hit the enter button on steering wheel it automatically alters route around the incident. If I just ignore the prompt it stays on present route. The voice command function is another area the G excels in. It has a very large vocabulary and responds very well. That is what I use to manipulate the Music Box (built in hard drive). I can change folders or songs as needed verbally. Don’t get me wrong this is not an Infinti commercial or anything I just call them as I see them. To sum it even considering these things I’m very happy with my Genesis and considering all things given the knowledge acquired from owning both I would still buy the Genesis again because it offers the “Most bang for the buck”.

Thanks for the input. My experience is different with my 2008 G35. The voice commands were crippled in the middle of the 2008 model year, so I NEVER use them. I printed the voice command cheat sheet from www.g35driver.com, and many of them no longer work. Looks like it USED to be very useful. Apparently some users were having issues with the wrong command being recognized, so a bunch of them were disabled mid-year. For example, I can use voice commands to switch to satellite radio, but I can't change the channel. I can turn the AC on or off, but can't specify a temperature. I didn't find those useful. Eventually I used voice commands so infrequently that I forgot the few that WERE useful. Consider yourself lucky to have an 07, and not a late-08. Lots of complaint threads on the g35 site.

My experience with the traffic also doesn't match yours, but I think it may be because my metro area (Columbus OH) doesn't have all of the XM traffic functionality (it has incident, but not traffic flow). In any case, I've never had it alert me of an accident and ask about re-routing, although I CAN see accidents on the map.

I belong to G35driver also and am aware of the changes to the voice command function.
I thought that to be a terrible thing to do to a useful function. They crippied a great option. As you stated I can use all the functions verbally Radio, Temperature and Navigation. I can understand your position. Like I said before I do believe you are on the right track with the Genesis decision. It is a beautiful car in form and function. Good luck.
