The incompetence of my local Genesis dealership...

After my last visit I'm more inclined to bring a torque wrench. They over-torqued the daylights out of all my wheels when they rotated them.

Air impact gun. Most places, even tire specific shops don’t actually torque wheel nuts unless you request such. They like to zip nuts on like a NASCAR pit crew.
 
Oh I know. I was hoping for better. My tire place and my old BMW dealer do hand torque only.

Just changed the oil myself this time. Big surprise, the drain plug and the oil filter cap were both waaay too tight.
Also, not happy to see rust corrosion starting already on a hose clamp, which is pretty well shielded from the elements. It hasn't even seen a full winter yet! Not using stainless steel clamps is apparently another cost cutting measure. Not happy about that. I've got cars that are 10-20 years old with 120k miles with hose clamps that look better than this.
 
Michael V does have a good point, though - treat others with respect and you're more likely to get it back. If you can actually speak to the mechanics that will touch the car, that's a good thing. I've never been able to see/meet anyone who has worked on my car, but honestly I have not had any major/bad experiences. This comes from buying quality cars that don't need shop repairs and doing the maintenance yourself - or, finding a good dealership. Again, the Sewell group in Dallas is top-notch. Too bad they don't sell Genesis.
 
@Husky - Disappointing to see the rust on that clamp. I worry that more and more of the parts on this car are made from very inexpensive base metals prone to rust, etc. A branch of Hyundai (possible the initial company) is a steel company so they are aware of exactly what they are doing and it could be aiding the competitive pricing they can sell this car at.

My only observations so far is the rotors (atleast on my early 2019/2018 build) are made from cheap steel and very prone to surface rust and pitting. Worse than any car I've owned yet. Not the end of the world but my car is in the shop right now having a rotor replaced due to pitting. (Also, I argued to replace rotors in pairs but didn't get anywhere with that)

Overall, best car I've ever owned and would immediately buy again. But something to keep an eye on. This is why I undercoated my car with oil.

This is why I dont drive in wet or on salty roads. I would never buy one as a daily driver.

It's amazing hearing all this stuff. There are tons of Hyundais on the road and they have one of the highest reliability ratings out there these days.

It's all just speculation at this point anyways. It's funny how all cars are great during the test drive, rentals, drive a friend's car, and then you buy one and become super OCD about every little thing.

I'm happy daily driving this car. Nothing I would rather be driving in the winter and could not sacrifice what I drive for 50 percent of the year with a winter beater. Atleast everyone is in the same boat in the cold climates in regards to exposure, trade in value, etc. Dealer doesn't care if you baby your car vs drive it hard and let the underside rust at the end of the day.
 
Also this critique of the metal only really applies to people of the "I expect the car to last 20 years" category if you know what I mean. Short term who cares. Case in point, all BMWs lol

True. I keep my cars about two years except my RAM Ecodiesel daily driver. I love that truck and it has been awesome since new. 89k miles with zero issues since I bought it new in 2015. It sits outside, goes through car washes, etc. Looks and runs like new still. Maybe I should just stick to trucks. I dont worry about them as much.

Yup, great car, disappointing service. I don't care how great the car is though, in this segment service is as important as the product and you will not be successful without both. The recurring complaints on the forum just confirm that my own experience is not an outlier. I have had both good and bad service at other brands, but so far Genesis seems consistently disappointing. Stories like this really erode my already low trust.
 
Started doing my own oil changes with this car. First change I found the oil filter cap torqued on way too hard from the dealership (demo model). Fortunately only one issue so far requiring dealer work. The fewer the better!
 
I actually really enjoy doing routine maintenance on cars, especially a nice one like my G70. That said, I really don't mind not feeling obligated to use the included service. I just see this as a legitimate reason not to ever let them touch my car again.
 
I will use the maintenance with the dealer because my car is a lease but if it were mine there is no doubt I wouldn't let those scumbags to touch my car.
What's the benefit of having "Free Maintenance" if they are not going to put the manufacturer's recommended oil, not counting that maybe they'll cause any other damage?
 
That can be said about ANY mechanic anywhere. If the Mechanic sucks they suck it has nothing to do with where but WHO. Too all the do it your selfers thats awesome for you, can we bring our cars to your house to so you can work on it for us that cant self wrench? I'm all for dealer bashing when they F up and calling out particularly bad dealers or bad service is a must but the same can be said of any car dealer NEW or USED, Branded dealership or Private Mechanic, they will NOT take care of your car the way YOU will take care of your car. What to do ...WATCH who is working on your car and go over there work, if its up to par GREAT buy them a box of donuts, Pizza, Beer whatever and maintain a good relationship with that MECHANIC. If there work is not up to par then find a new mechanic.

I build computers when I am in the mood for a new one which I take GREAT time and care into selecting my parts, Tie wrapping my cables, liquid cooling etc and you better believe my computer for me works AMAZING but when friends ask me to build them one I may but they don't get the same painstaking time and effort I put into my own rig.

Similar issues happened with my old BMW I had an AMAZING service adviser initially this person went out of there way above and beyond all expectations a true white glove service experience for my first 2 years of ownership, then they decided to move on in life and left the BMW dealer. The new adviser was shit, they didn't know me and treated the customers like a number and they sucked.

The moral of the story is find someone that works on your car mostly the way you want it to be worked on, and cultivate a relationship with that mechanic and service department.

Simply saying I would never let XYZ work on my car isn't saying much. If you have the skill to do it yourself, hell yeah I would do that, but the vast MAJORITY of us don't have the time/tools and or skill level to do that.

I agree with you. My mechanic is a friend of mine. He takes care of my son and fathers cars just like if he were the owner, he doesn't even charge me for routine maintenance, just parts, but what I'm saying is another thing. If you go to a dealer for a recommended maintenance, why in the name of God that dealer (not the mechanic) has to put a non specs oil in your car? Why treat you bad and rude? Why don't have a loaner as supposed? Those things is what I'm talking about. With this dealers's behavior, Genesis is screwing up its future. If they don't take measures will lose many customers and the brand will go down even if they manufacture one of the best cars in the market.

As the OP of this thread, I expressed my frustration toward the ONLY dealer that is local to me, backed up by objective information as to exactly what they have done wrong. What I posted are incredibly amauture mistakes that are completely inexcusable. If you're trying to say that you have to buy a mechanic's will to do his or her job correctly via treats or gifts in order to not damage your personal property, then I'm gonna be the first to tell you that you are absolutely wrong. If ANYONE notices shit like this done to their car, then they have every right and reason to complain - because bullshit like this is wrong. It may be due to inexperience, or it could be from malicious intent; it doesn't matter, it's a job done incorrectly and there is damage resulted from it.

BOTTOM LINE is that if YOUR dealership is pulling shit like this - you need to go to a different dealer. If you have to buy someone something extra, or buddy up with them just so they don't f*ck you over then you are going to the wrong place. No one should have to pay extra to have the job done right. This isn't about some personal OCD method I have myself to work on cars, this is about doing the job CORRECTLY.

Very true. I would never pay extra for the service that was paid for in the first place.

First thing I would have done is bring it to the service directors attention and if they scoffed at it talk to the general manager or the owner if necessary. A call to genesis usually results is favorable action from the dealer too as they may not want to loose the brand.

Todd have you called Beaverton Hyundai? I here they may be Genesis soon. Maybe you can have Genesis NA work a deal to have your service done there.
