The mystery about transmission hard shift is finally revealed (TSB for HARSH 2~3, 3~4 OR 4~5 UPSHIFT)

Hi Husam,
I’ve the same issue with my 2017 3.8. When the engine is cold, jerk is a lot more compared to when it’s running in 2-3 and 5-6 gears, is it the solenoids only or something else?

If you have not replaced the transmission fluid, do it first. If this does not fix it then you have two more possible causes :

Two solenoids to be replaced
Valve body needs to be replaced

Thank you

I have a early 2012 5.0 8speed. Purchased used from dealer, ran smooth. I buy it and next day going to work 50mins away and getting into city traffic, I have horrible hard shifts and shift flares. I have on my list to do is replace all 6 solenoids, new filter pan, add fresh fluid to existing old and not to flush. Drain and replace diff fluid. Is there anything else I'm missing?

If the valve body is clogged with debris, it will not be cleaned until you rebuild the valve body or replace it.

What valve body are you referring to? Im not sure I follow

What are the part numbers for the new solenoids? I want to make sure I buy the new version and not the old. I'm guessing it's same number as old part but ends with 2 instead if 1?

I'm not sure about your car model since it's make is 2012. But for 2015 year, the new parts are:

46313-4E702
46313-4E602

They may or may not fit. You have to validate those with the dealership.

Thank you

Did you take your car to the same dealer you bought it from or a different one and was your car still under warranty to cover it? Having the same problem on my 2017 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate and worried my dealer will give me a hard time over it.
Sorry for the late response.
I took the car to my local Hyundai dealer, not to the one I bought my car from because it's way far out of town for me.

The tech/advisor got in touch with Hyundai about my transmission (hard-shift) issue and within few hours I was told that I will be getting a new transmission. It was ordered same day and I guess (IIRC) within 2 weeks I had new transmission installed completely under warranty.

The local Hyundai Team is amazing to me. The Tech and the advisor know what they are doing.

Just curious if this applies to a GV80 as well. I have a 2022 G80 Sport and have had no problems, but my wife has a 2023 GV80 and she does have frequent harsh shifting.

It is disheartening to hear that a 2023 is having the same issue, I can't believe that Hyundai hasn't addressed of fixed the issue in 5+ years...

Yeah - They should've just got the ZF 8 speed that practically everyone else uses & called it a day...!

Here is an update.

I just had the solenoids replaced in the transmission valve body a couple of days ago with a full transmission fluid change with a complete flush.

I then reset the adaptive values and then performed full adaptation by learning the pressure points of the upshifts and the downshifts.

I will continue to monitor the transmission behavior but so far the shifts are much better, you could say 70%-80% better shifts.

4 to 5 harsh upshift gone away.
2 to 3 harsh upshift 50% better.

I will write an update next week as well.

Husam.
Can you explain how you did the whole learning the pressure points part? How do you do it?

Is this required when changing it with a used valve body/tcm? Or does it only need to be done if it’s brand new?

Not sure if this was addressed in another post and if yes, accept my apologies.

The mystery about transmission hard shift is finally revealed.

Hyundai issued a TSB for HARSH 2~3, 3~4 OR 4~5 UPSHIFT back in November 2021.

The culprits are two solenoids which Hyundai upgraded and they need to be installed instead of the old ones.

The bulletin describes the procedure to replace the 35R and 4&OD solenoids for as shift flare and/or harsh shift during the 2~3, 3~4 or 4~5 upshift.

Attached is the TSB copy which illustrates the part numbers.

Good luck.

Husam.
I have a 2012 Genesis 3.8L 4 dr sedan. Short story: transmission was slipping / hard shifting and eventually the dealer replaced it under warranty at 77k miles.
Now have ~140k miles and in rain or cold weather it’s very pronounced hard shift between 2nd & 3rd gear. Sometimes to the point of a loud bang. Otherwise it’s an intermittent problem.
I’m hoping this solenoid TSB will be the solution. I need to know how much it will cost. Anyone recently had this done not under warranty?
Very disturbing that this is occurring in 2023 models. Really?
Thx in advance.

Just did it not too long ago, same 2012 3.8 sedan. I bought the valve body (with tcm) on eBay for $400 and the two solenoids for $205 total (hyundaipartsdeal.com) I did all the labor myself, since I have a connection with an auto shop. I replaced the parts, reset the tcm values and the oil of course and all is great now.

115k miles. Had this service performed and my transmission issues are completely resolved. Thank you!
