Genesis Model Type
No Genesis Yet!
Hi, new here (obviously). Anyway, I've been interested in the Genesis line for some time. Wanted a 2015, but they seem to have a lot issues (I might be paranoid). Anyway, saw a 2014 for $18k with 29k miles. It seems to be loaded. Involved in a minor accident tho. The 2014 model does have the top reliability rating on consumer reports. I'm really tempted to pull the trigger.

If the collision repair was done well, it might be a good price. You want the Tech package, IIRC. I have a 2014 R-Spec, and I enjoy all the bells and whistles. About 99% of the time I drive the car, I wouldn't notice the difference between the 3.8 and 5.0. The biggest difference is the gas mileage, which is fair in the R-Spec. I get about 18 mpg in city driving. YMMV!

Sounds good, but I would spend a couple thousand extra and buy a full comprehensive extended warranty to cover you just in case of hidden problems.

I have an 2015 with 58k miles and have not heard of any major issues. However , I did just buy mine a month ago. I did purchased a full comprehensive Assurance 0 deductible 40k warranty for about $1300 so the 2015 model can not be that mechanically weak, because warranty companies seem to charge a lot more for warranty protection on well known problematic models especially a full comprehensive coverage. That alone tells the 2015 models are rock solid.

I wouldn't waste the money on an extended warranty, most of them have proven to be pretty much garbage. Put the $1500 in a savings fund for those "just in case" repairs that may come up, you'll be WAY better off. Don't get a warranty. You have a top rated newer model vehicle that already has a warranty (even being a second owner). 5/60K miles I believe it is.

Side note, does the 2014 stereo offer bluetooth AUDIO ? I know my previous 2009 had an AWESOME stereo, but it didn't allow to stream audio, just had phone calls over BT. A big negative for me, I like streaming via BT.

Extended Car Warranties: An Expensive Gamble

I used to believe that same thing until I actually bought a used car that needed $1500(actually about $1200) in repairs a year later when the comprehensive factory warranty expired. Then it needed a few repairs here and there.
It was a 2011 Ford Edge AWD Limited my wife wanted, luckily I decided to buy the extended warranty since it needed a new transmission cooler line that was not covered by the remaining Ford power train warranty. Problem is that the job required the AC condenser to be replaced as well due to some hybrid AC condenser/transmission cooler design hence the $1200 price tag.

That $1200 extended warranty paid for itself in one repair. The wheel bearings went next and then an issue with the fancy MYtouch navigation radio, all covered under the warranty. Granted, I feel that Hyundai is better built than a Ford, but I take no chances on used cars with minimum warranty coverage after that close call. Most remaining power train warranties do not cover anything outside of the engine and transmission like cooler lines, sensors, suspension parts, etc.

But we all must weight the risk and move as we see fit.

Note: Depending on the build date the original poster used 2014 may already be out of 5/60 power-train warranty since some 2014 models were actually built in 2013.

Difference between tech and premium? I believe the car was definitely manufactured in 2014. I would get a 2015, as stated above, but I keep reading about electrical issues.

Precisely. Vehicles these days can break the bank when out of warranty. My '12 Genesis is covered till 2024/120,000 by an extended warranty. The warranty that I paid $1,299 for has already paid for itself.

You will still only have about a year of power train coverage. I gave my advice so do as you please. Hopefully I do not read a future thread where you are bashing the car later due to some issue that may pop up and cost $$$$ to fix out-of-pocket soon after purchasing the car by not adding an extended warranty.

The early pre-2015 models are not problem free by a long shot, however are still very reliable. I only heard about transmission problems(v6 models) and oil burning due to crappy piston rings(5.0 v8) on the early Genesis models which were addressed in 2015. I only heard about rattling sunroof issues on the 2015 models, but nothing else that was common.

Don't misunderstand, I'm definitely not discounting an extended warranty. Just weighing my options. In regards to the 2015, I keep reading about various electrical problems. Particularly on consumer report sites. Just electrical tho, engine and power train issues don't seem to be a problem. I'm slightly paranoid.

What issues being reported for the 2015 models? I have an full comprehensive warranty , but I would like to know what to expect. I only read about possible sunroof issues. What electrical issues did I miss?

My 2015 seems to work just fine besides the reverse camera and driver cooled seat which are easy repairs. I already fixed the cooled seat which was just a loose seat air duct tube. Took about 1 minute to fix and the camera works overall, but do not change from the wide angle view. However, I knew about those issues going in when I bought it which let me negotiate a very good deal on the car. The camera is a $120 dollar part new on Hyundai part online stores and it is easy to access through the trunk, however I will let the extended warranty cover it when I get time to take it in.

So yes my 2015 had some issues ,but very minor ones that are easy to repair or over look like the fixed camera angle. The camera is suppose to switch from a normal wide angled view and a close top down view.

I read the pre-2015 models could have transmission problems. I would be more worried about an issue like that out of warranty.
Transmission problems

Yeah, owner complaints range from backup camera issues, GPS and display screen problems. Numerous complaints about squeaks and rattles. Some minor engine problems are noted in the 2010-12 models. These came from Consumer Reports.

Carcomplaints also reflect this data:

2015 Hyundai Genesis problems

Hyundai Genesis Problems

This is what pushed me to getting the 2014 model. It seems to have the least reported complaints/issues.

Makes sense that the 2014 is rock solid since it was the last model year for that generation. I have learned that most last generation models from any automaker usually have all the bugs worked out through the production run and are the most reliable.

Unfortunately, the first production run cars are the most problematic like the 2015 models. However, it seems like the 2015 is only getting hit with minor issues that mostly appears early on and is addressed under warranty. I noticed that my 2015 model had a few service visits on the Car Fax report for electrical concerns. It seems like the last owner sorted most of the common issues out early on in my car.

Seems like the 2014 would be a good reliable car to purchase.:)

Take the VIN# to your local dealer and ask the service writer for a detailed service history. Also ask if they'll write you a Hundai Protection Plan extended warranty (I recommend Platinum which will be in the $1.5k-$3k range depending on +years/+miles/deductible you select). If they will then go for it, but if they will not then do not buy the car.

+1 to this. I bought HPP Platinum warranties for both my '09 and '12, and both paid for themselves within the first year. I was able to pro-rata roll over the remaining warranty on the '09 into the '12 which helped with the cost.

Yes all 2013+ Bluelink cars can stream bluetooth. Bluelink was the major new feature of 2013.

1st gen year - major updated features
2009 - entered US market
2010 - improved suspension a little
2011 - smart cruise, 3.8 GDI
2012 - body style refresh, improved suspension greatly, 5.0 GDI, RSPEC, downgraded audio system.
2013 - Bluelink
2014 - new colors

My 2014 has 106k miles. I change oil religiously. No car issues to date. I simply replaced tires and brakes. Pull the trigger if you are comfortable with accident damage repair. Mine is loaded and have enjoyed since new. I am looking toward Equus purchase as next car. Moving on up! Great car. Simply need to take care of it!

The problem is most people do not put that same money in some sort of safe/savings/investment fund. They simply spend it then when repairs come up they are SOL.

And yes the 2013 and 14 have bluetooth audio - works great

The '12 base and premium package models ALSO stream Bluetooth audio. The Tech package '12 models, including R-Spec do not.

Ok, I found the Genesis I wanted and car payments are not an issue. Even tacked on a warranty; unfortunately, insurance is now the issue...I don't think I realized how expensive it would be to insure this vehicle with my current record. I have zero points on my license, but accidents are hurting me. I have two incidents over the past three years where someone else hit me. Then recently, in January this year, I tapped someone's car backing up. There was no damage, but they escalated it. They then tried to claim they were injured, which was total BS because the accident happened at about 5 miles per hour. They weren't moving, they didn't claim injury at the scene and later on they never provided my insurance company with any medical documents. I guess they were looking for a freebie.

Anyway, when I try to get quotes for the 2014 Genesis, I get ludicrous prices from most insurance companies. Ranging from a house a mortgage payment ($1500 a month) to $430, which is still high in my book. Those prices are even with discounts added (like safety features and driver monitoring)! I live in GA, btw. With quotes like those, I might have to skip on this one. LOL!

That sounds crazy. You need to sit down with a good insurance agent and find out what the problem is. No matter what kind of car you drive, liability should not change much. Sure, you can do more damage with a Lambo at 150 mph, but that backing up accident would not matter if you had a Genesis or Chevette.

Collision insurance is determined by the cost of repair records and value of the car. Going up to a higher price to replace is naturally a bit more but yours sounds outlandish.

In this age of stolen identity, make sure you are not being charged with someone else's driving record.

Yeah, I'm thinking my records get mixed up with my dad since we share the same name; sans suffix. Even with a $1000 deductible on collision and damage, plus drastically reduced payouts; the cheapest I can find for full coverage is $312. Makes no sense. I'll definitely have to sit down with someone in person.
