  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

To stagger or not to stagger that is the question

For those of you out there who have considered or done a staggered set up on the 4.6 I am looking for feedback please.

I'm leaning toward going with 245/40/20's all around but I'm curious to know if anyone has gone with a set up like this. 245/40/20 front and 275/35/20 rear. Are they any real performance gains by doing so. Please advise.

Thanks.

That is the way the coupes are set up from the factory - wider tires in the rear than on the front. Corvettes used to be set up that way (may still be).

Yes there are performance gains. Your tire and rim dealer/manufacturer will definitely improve their profitability.

I definitely prefer the staggered look which is what I have on my car. I originally had a non-staggered set of 20's and the rears always looked to narrow to me when looking at the car from the rear. I eventually lowered my car and with the 10" wide rear wheels, the car has a much more aggressive looking stance.

I absolutely love the look of your ride. In fact, I have narrowed down my choices for new wheels to the Hennessey's and a Vossen.
How is the ride on yours with the low profile sidewall? My last car was a G35 Sedan lowered on 18's but I had 235/45/18 tires. The ride roughness in that car was more from being lowered than the tire size.

thx

@newman also went with Hennessey's on his R-Spec but in 19". I've been happy with them. In this thread, I have large pictures so you can see them better:

The ride for me had been fine up until the point that my current coilovers gave out. My ride now is shot and I've been trying to get them replaced. I've always lowered my cars and put on larger wheels with low profile tires and so I'm used to that type of ride. At one point it felt real good, firm but comfortable.

I have looked at your large pics a number of times. How about tire wear? Good/bad? Thanks for your feedback.

Definitely not good. It doesn't help that my car is lowered and there is no camber adjustment. I'm in need of new tires now. Luckily I have another set of 20" wheels with the same tires that are basically new so I can use two of them for the fronts. The rears I will have to buy since they are a different width.

It's worth it though. Maybe if you don't lower your car and you find a set of tires with good wear characteristics, you will be fine.

LOL. Staggering your tires for street use is purely cosmetic. Unless you are going around a skidpad, or slalom course, or trying to lap Laguna Seca, it's just a waste of money. Not to mention the real world has tore up roads, which will likely tear up your big rims and tires. 20's will also make the ride comfort very harsh, create speedo errors, add wear and stress to your chassis and make finding tires more complicated, expensive and repetitious.

I have 22's that are staggered...Wouldn't have it any other way.

Man, digging this up from the grave!

BUT, I used the search function to find exactly what I wanted to ask myself..

Anyone more opinions on this? I am leaning towards 19's, non staggered. I like the look of a staggered setup, but I like the idea of all 4 tires being the same and not having to worry about 2 different tire sets.

I drive a base, so for sure I know I want to upgrade those rims!

Where did you get that horrible info from. Yeah, you should drive carefully wether you have stock wheels or aftermarket. A cast stock wheel is more likely to crack than a 2 or 3 piece forged wheel. Ive gotten normal or better mileage out of staggered sets of tires so long as toe and camber is kept in check. Also the tire technology has come a long way and 20's with a reasonable sidewall ride just fine. Many cars come with 20's from the factory, i dont think they would if it didnt ride good. It wont add stress to components unless you have some crazy negative offset which would wear hubs. Also it wont messup your speedo so long as you have the same overall diameter. I went from an 18 to a 20 and i actually have a tad bit smaller overall diameter but the speedo is only off by the smallest of amounts. I believe on my car when it says 60, im really doing 59.8. There is an acceptable range a speedo can be off. Idk if youve looked, but you can find as many 20" tires as anything else

There's no way in this world I'd make all those changes to the wheels/tires on a Genny, plus it's only a V6!!!!!!

The ride is rough enough (too rough actually) and then to spend thousands of $$ to make the ride worse is about as handy as pockets in your underwear.

As P. T. Barnum said........ there's a sucker born every minute. oh how true.

Most of the time people do these types of things to customize the appearance of their vehicle - and understand there's going to be a sacrifice in ride quality. Appearance is experienced subjectively. I don't feel one person is in any way better than the other as a result of making (or not making) changes like this. Human beings are the most intelligent species on the planet - yet we find a way to judge one another based on personal preferences like wheel size...

I too am about to put my Genny on some 20's. I am concerned about ride quality, but after seeing how nice the car above looked on 22s, I feel good about riding on 245/40/20. I am leaning towards non staggered. I like the way they both look, but I am concerned about tire wear and replacement costs.

does anybody have 2014-2016 Hyundai Equus chrome wheels that they are selling?
