Top Speed Run

I thought the 155 governor ratings came from Europe (not that Genesis is sold there) but I thought Germany started the idea of a self imposed limit to avoid government mandated speed limits on the autobahn.

Japan has a 112 limit, fun when you buy a GS460 etc....

A couple of weeks ago I did get the opportunity to drive the V-6 Genesis at slightly above 130mph. I own the 4.6 which I have also driven that fast once.
In the case of the V-6, I slowed it down because it started to feel too loose for my comfort. In contrast, my 4.6 seems to feel tighter as the speed increases. Guilt and feeling like a blooming fool made me back off. I'm just too old, but smart enough to know that everything is eventual. I'm just not in any rush to prove it.

I just bought a 09 4.6 with 8K miles last friday. I buried the speedometer (160) on the way home a few times. In Houston there are a lot of new developing freeways to sustain future growth so theyre just like autobahns in the middle of nowhere. I have never driven a benz or bmw but I am completely comforatable with the car at speed. I'm not your average bear tho, I'm kind of a speed freak.

Had a 2004 Road King. Not a bad bike, but, talk about a needy piece of machinery. Harley service was great in all honesty. I just didn't realize how much service it was going to need. I really like the newer ones. Maybe someday I will get another Road King. My Royal,V4, is a damn sweet engine. Always have loved the Goldwings though.

What's the cheapest way to get another 50hp from your Harley?
Trade it in on a Kawasaki.

What's the difference between a Harley and a Harley owner's home?
The Harley costs more and has fewer wheels.

Why don't Harley riders wave at sportbike riders?
Because they don't want to drop their tools.

How do Harley engineers tell if a bike is worthy of the Harley name?
They check to make sure the exhaust noise in decibels exceeds the horsepower rating.

What's the difference between a Harley Davidson and a vacuum cleaner?
The location of the dirtbags.

How is a Harley Davidson like an old dog?
They both like to ride in the back of pickup trucks.

What is the difference between a Harley Davidson and an old dog?
The dog can get in the back of the pickup by itself.

What's the difference between a Harley taken to Daytona on a trailer and one that's being ridden there?
The one on the trailer is going about 30mph faster.

Why do all Harley owners have trailers??
So they can go around corners faster!

Man I Love it! I absolutely hate harley's!!! Not so much because of dependability because they've came a long way since 2005, but because of the superiority complex and the stupid ass club the owners are in. I too have a wing a 2008 Airbag with EVERYYYTHING, just last MAY my Finance and I rode out to California and back across the country pulling a trailer with out camping gear, (6800 miles in 14 days)it was awesome I love that motorcycle. But I also have a Kawasaki zx-14 and a Yamaha roadliner(harley killer) any ways point being I love all motorcycles but cant stand the harley BS.

Actually, I like Harleys just fine - I just thought the jokes were funny.

I don't own a Harley, mind you. I own a 2003 VStar Classic 1100. I'll own it forever. It's beautiful. I've entered three shows, won them all in the Metric Cruiser class, and also one "best of show".

I'll ride with anyone that rides responsibly.

Did you know that over 90% of all Harleys ever produced are still on the road? The other 10% actually made it home.

Couldn't resist......lol

Sorry in advance for the soapbox rant.

God help anyone turning a public road into a dragstrip that ends up hurting someone (other than themselves.) With all due respect, I just don't understand 140+mph on a public road ("hardly used" or not.) Yeah, yeah... world's greatest driver, have it under control, yada yada. When I was in law enforcement, there were many world's greatest drivers that were scraped up off the road; many innocent victims too.

I'd expect such things from kids... we've all done questionable things when we were young, but I'm surprised to see several adults, presumably with kids of their own, acting so recklessly.

I'm sure there are a dozen self-justifications people conjure up - to me, it's no different than drunk driving (and similar logic -- "Only live down the road", "I'm fine to drive", etc.) Unnecessary risk, no matter how you spin it.

Not lecturing, just my opinion. I guess I look at things differently now that I have kids of my own.

I have kids and grandkids and dear friends and feel that folks who use public roads to gain a testosterone rush by driving over 100 mph belong in jail for one month and then not be allowed to drive at all for one year. when released.

When police choose to chase these fools, it can really get ugly. When these fools, blow a tire ... On and on. Come on folks! We have enough data to know how dangerous this is to the speeders and to THE INNOCENTS on public roads. A pox on a-holes who indulge in, support and try to justify this kind of behavior.

From one old(ish) guy to another, I have to agree.

LOL I can assure your kids and grandkids are safe when I'm on an isolated freeway having a little fun. I do understand that the idea of someone driving recklessly around your family would piss you off I totally get it. When I choose to cut up I make sure that I'm only putting myself at risk. Most people have some way of getting their kicks, drinking, partying, and maybe widdleing for some of the folks on here lol. Some of us just require a little extra rush like jumping out of planes or going fast. As long as you keep it on a track or an isolated road where no one else has to pay for your mistakes I don't have an issue with it.

You cannot assure anything when driving over 100 mph on public roads. You cannot control conditions to the extent that it is reasonablly safe for you and others using the road. You are breaking laws that have been put in place to protect you and innocents. Please jump out of planes or shoot the rapids or go over the falls in a barrel, but PLEASE DO NOT PUT MY LOVED ONES IN HARMS WAY! And LOL to you too! LOL here and regurgitating.

Didn't we have this same discussion several months ago resulting in hurt feelings and other bad results. Let's agree that high speeds on public roads are probably not a good idea and just leave it at that. Some on this forum have set themselves up as the resident moral authority and it is pointless to feed their need to judge others who post on this.

We did and you're right... this type of discussion pops up on most car forums at one time or another.

I've seen 150 a couple of times.
Once when hanging door to door with a new 370Z
and the other time was when a guy in an 04 Mustang GT, in front of me holding up the fast lane on the highway, waved "bye bye" to me before flooring his car. I quickly caught and passed him, then left him.

Normally, I'm cruising between 80-90 during my commute. (I leave my house around 4:30am, so my 57 mile mostly highway commute has sparse traffic)

I would easily feel comfortable setting the cruise at 110mph; but the law and the law of physics don't agree with those speeds on a regular basis.

Although this doesn't excuse my occasional sprint to triple digits, I have taught high speed driving for two Florida driving schools (Trackspeed International, which has been closed for years, and Chin Motorsports which is still in business) I've held a SCCA Road Race license for years and raced in class ITA for years, up until 2002. Again, this experience doesn't give me a license to speed on public roads, but I think I'm probably more competent behind the wheel at these speeds than your average Joe.

Here's some vids for you:

This is when my 1992 Mazda Protege LX was still my daily driver. Track day at Sebring. I'm trying to chase down this 400hp Mustang. I can't hang on the straight aways, but I catch him because of handling and braking

This is the Same Mazda a couple years later, in a 1.5 hour Endurance race at Daytona. Just didn't have enough hp to pass that darn 91 CRX Si. But I give him a good bump coming out of the International Horseshoe.

This is a quick 60mph to 140mph run in my old 2002 VW GTI 337. This car was my daily driver and it consistently trapped 109 mph in the 1/4 mile.

Poster that express disagreement with reckless behavior are not being moral prudes. Those drivers engaging in the reckless behavior have no credibility to express outrage with disagreement for their behavior. Except as a matter of degree, there is no difference betwen a person that drives excessively fast and a driver that habitually drives drunk. That's not a judgment, it is an absolute.

So far, I've seen evidence that exactly one poster besides myself has the experience to drive at speeds 2 and 3 times the legal limit. He is exercising poor judgment in doing so on public roads - that is simply a fact. He is an adult, and I have no problem with adults making a decisio to break the law. i do it all the time. I speed - often 10 MPH over the posted limit. I also drive significantly under the posted limit on occasion, when my judgment and experience tells me the conditions warrant it. That I am able to use logic and reason to arrive at a conclusion does not make me a moral prude.

The problem I have is that the overwhelming majority if you do not possess the experience to successfully do anything other tha hold your car in a straight line at high speeds. Driving for 50 years, occasionally haveing to countersteer when you hit a slick atch at 35 MPH does not prepare you for anything that goes even slightly wrong at 125MPH. Simply put, most of you don't know what you are doing, and therefore lack the ability to make an informed decision about what sppeds are appropriate.

I'll ask the scottisha his opinion on the subject. How about it scott - would you be comfortable door to door with an average commute driver at 125MPH, appoaching a corner that'll require a 40MPH entry ad support a 70MPH exit? What's your opinion about the average drivers ability to pull it off without getting into you? And make no mistake - most everyone else on this forum is just an average everyday driver.

I actually feel very uncomfortable driving door to door with others on public highways. I assume the worst and act accordingly the times that I have used poor judgment by street racing someone. It's one thing to take off from a light and run it up to 60 mph at full throttle, but it's an entirely different animal at highway speeds. There are so many things that can go wrong. Tire blows out, obstacle in the road, slow moving vehicles ahead, other vehicle failures, etc... So, although I've done it, I definitely recognize the stupidity in it.
I would absolutely not enter into a race on public roads that involve bends or turns. Most people can NOT adequately handle their cars at or beyond the limitations of the cars they are driving/racing, so it's nuts to attempt a race without clear, straight conditions.

Now, I typically drive faster than traffic, if traffic is light. 10 mph is a typical rule of thumb for me during normal traffic conditions. I do however find myself doing 85-90 on the stretch of highway I commute on, if the traffic allows it and I feel comfortable doing so. Trust me, I've been passed by minivans doing 95mph and I always scratch my head wondering how they would react to an emergency braking or avoidance situation, if it came up. I either drop back from these people or stay well ahead of them.

Does that address your question?

Scott

Does anyone here question their tires ability to hold the road at these speeds?

I don't care how well you drive if you don't have high performance tires!

Your answer addresses my question perfectly, thank you.

When I was racing (dirt and asphalt ovals), my cars were a "stock" class, but they had so significant safety and performance improvements as to make real stock cars vastly infeior for the purpose of manuevering at high speeds and surviving high speed impacts. A Genesis is not equiped to handle high speed manuevering, nor is it survivable in a high speed crash. A very experienced, competent driver can overcome the cars limitations. An average commute driver cannot - and is usually unaware of his personal limitations.

The truth is that driving a stock Genesis on a public highway at speeds over 100PH is always stupid. Adults are allowed to do stupid stuff, so long as the stu[idity does not have even a potential to affect others. I get a kick out of watching aults do stupid stuff that results in ether embarrasment or harm to themselves. The level of my enjoyment rises proportional to the predictability of the negative outcome. I am particularly a fan of the anual Darwin Awards.

On public roads, it is not possible to completely mitigate the danger to other drivers, so it is always irresponsible to drive a Genesis at very high speeds on pubic highways. The average driver is unable to handle it, and often is unaware of this fact. In fact, ice an snow storms regularly demonstrate just how ill equiped most drivers are at handling emergency driving procedures at normal speeds.

Does anyone here question their tires ability to hold the road at these speeds?

Right on. And consider the separated truck tire teads in your lane, the unexpected animal crossings or the slick deposited by a leaking delivery vehicle or the clog of traffic ahead where all lanes are in use or the unexpected event ahead (perhaps a breakdown or an accident).

One cannot use public roads at speeds in excess of 100 mph at any time, under any conditions, without exposing themselves and innocents to extreme danger.

I request that the moderators of this forum block this type of thread in the future.
