  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2009 4.6 Tech. with 61,500 miles.

I've noticed that when making the first drive of the day, I back out of my garage to the street, then put the car in drive. When it shifts from 1-2, it is giving me a bit of clunk - rough shift. Once that occurs, though, no other issues driving throughout the day.

I've tried more/less throttle, result is the same.

Is this common? Possible remedies?

Thanks.

Sounds like a Torque Converter issue, have you checked your fluids?
How is it after sitting all day?

I have a 2012 3.8L -V-6 Somtime mine revs higher the normal when I start in the morning in the garage, put in reverse the revs do not drop, and when I put in drive it shoots up a 1000rpm. Then it goes to normal. taking it dealer today they will probably tell me that all the paramenters are fine and no codes were set off.

fwb181,
why are you so sure the dealer will find No issues?
My 2013 V6 does rev slightly higher on initial start up, but by the time I have my seat belt On & have hit Accept - it's smooth as silk..

TPS (throtlle position sensor) for the 3.8L- there is a TSB for this, but you'll have to search on the forum for it, or visit your dealer.

OP next time your fire her up in the morning before you leave the garage instead of going into R put it in N for the count of 10 then back out as normal and see if you get the clunk. This is a easy way to test the torque converter as by putting her in N it will fill up the converter and you will not get the clunk if it is in fact even the converter.

Thanks, Vermillion3. I'll give that a try.

I get a loud "click" when shifting into Reverse first thing in the morning. Shifts fine otherwise. Doesn't sound like the same symptom the OP is talking about. I have a different trans than him anyhow.

Beacuse if they cannot find a code and replicate the issue they say that can't do anything. Which is what happened. also when mine starts up it is not as smooth as when it it was new at idle. My paitence is running thin with this service dept.

Dealer has not found anything about the high reving at start up. But they have finnally acknowledeged the rough idle. No codes shown but they are graphing a misfire on cylinder 3 and 6 at start up only. moved plugs and wires no change. Drained fule tank and found some crude they say, I did not see it. Still showing misfire. Now they don"t want to do anything more under warranty as they believe it is a contaminated fuel problem. I wonder what kind of crappy fule filter they are using? Not sure what to do next?

What type of crud did they find? Debris or other liquids (e.g. water)? Large debris should get blocked by the filters, very fine debris can get past the filters. And then it'll flow into all 6 injectors too and thus such debris is not going to affect 2 specific cylinders... it's either all of them or none of them.

Water or other liquid contamination can cause deposits to accumulate in the fuel injectors and, like hardening of arteries in the human body, such build-ups will occur at different rates in the various injectors. So 2 could be built up enough to cause fuel flow issues while the other 4 are not quite so bad... but they'll still have some buildup and won't be working 100% correctly either. Normally, when an injector is partially plugged the vehicle

a) suffers power loss at high speeds or when accelerating hard --> because a partially blocked injector can't spray enough fuel.

b) may have a rough idle because a partially blocked injector has a lousy shaped spray pattern... so the fuel isn't properly distributed inside the cylinder. At medium engine speeds the airflow inside the cylinder helps to "stir the mix." Idle though has very low airflow rates.

Easy to self-test the gas tank for fluid contamination: you need a gas rated siphon pump and a glass jar. Fill the jar about 3/4s full of gas and let it sit (outside!) in the shade for an hour or so, covered. Then look at it. If the gas has water or other liquid contamination you'll see layers as the fluids separate. A mechanically inclined person can park the car on a level surface and disassemble stuff to get to the top of the fuel tank... then by removing the fuel pump or the fuel level sensor one can literally see into the tank. Let it sit a while, then shine a flashlight into the tank to eyeball the gas and condition of the tank. Water contamination will be visible, as will rust buildup on the inside of the tank or other physical debris.

Are cylinders 3 and 6 the two rear-most cylinders (closest to the firewall/passenger compartment) on the Genesis? I don't know Hyundai's numbering scheme on the V6s... many cars often suffer oil buildup issues on the rear-most cylinders simply because the engine is often tipped backwards (mounted that way to line up with the driveshaft, and parking in sloped driveways tips the whole car, adding to that). When the valve stem seals wear out (they keep oil that flows loosely in the cylinder heads from flowing down the valves and into the piston cylinder chambers) oil can get into the cylinders when the vehicle is shut off. That can lead to a bit of tailpipe smoke at startup and a lumpy start-up idle. Very common on engines with 50K+ miles... it's normal wear.

Thanks Mike for your reply
I have only 24000 miles on my car, Not sure what they found in my fuel, will have to folow up with my dealer.

What cylinder configuartion I have am not sure either.

I am not mechinacally inclined so will have to realie on dealer for most things.

rough Idle seems to go away in a minute.

Will have to go back to dealer, they seem to be avoiding calling about my problem.
