Transmission problems

Thanks so much. I'm gonna find a solid used one...13 or 14. I can't afford the re-manufactured one. The dealership wanted $2800. and 1200 labor. I bought my salvage for 500. I'll find the right year for 500-900 or so. I wish I would have known about the 12 problem in particular but all good, I know now. Thanks so much.. I'll check back with you.

You have to replace it with a 13 or 14 hyundai 8 speed, the 12s are the problem. Supposedly they made revisions to the 13s and 14s but never told anyone about it cause its seldom that those model years have bad trannies but its rampant in the 2012 model year. Hyundai knows about it and that's why everyone under warranty just got a new trans if they found any problems with it... but outside of warranty? Be prepared to spend a pretty penny for a new unit but junk yards and ebay are your friend here for a good used unit

Update : I may have jumped the gun. The replacement 2012 tranny I put in is doing fine now..knock on wood. I guess after already having one transmission break on me, any type of semi hard shift sent me into a panic. I took it to my mechanic and he asked what happened. I explained that she exhibited a harsh 2nd gear shift a couple of times..he reflashed the computer so she is relearning shift patterns and so far is driving like a new car. God willing I will be okay but if not, I did find a couple of 2013 - 14 a speed transmissions that would fit my car with decent mileage currently on eBay, so I'll be okay eventually...thanks again friend.

Hello everyone,
Kinda new here, sorta.
I just bought a used 2016 Equus Signiture 68k miles (such a clean car)
I had the dealer throw in an extended service policy
Ran great when I test drove it.
The next day I noticed a jerking between gear changes (normally between 2nd and 3rd) Kinda like it is going back and forth between gears.
Now, if I change the gears no problem
What should I have the check first? Anyone think I need to rebuild the whole Trans or is there a shift solenoid?

That definitely sounds like solenoids to me i know a few of those NOT under warranty hav opened up the "sealed" trans and swapped out the solenoids no problem. However if you can get them to replace the trans under warranty i would try that route first.

Thanks Cali
I'll See what the extended service policy people say.

not so, I"m afraid. I have a 2013 3.8 sedan with 8 speed auto and the problem is all too familiar. Transmission specialist knew of it too. When I asked him about fixing the problem he said forget about it. He was very familiar with the car and said Hyundai (even though the parent company is very much a heavy industrial equipment company, did not do a good job with this in house transmission. In summary it couldn't quite take the power/torque of the engine (333 bhp). He also said that replacing it does not guarantee that you won't have the same problem. His recommendations were Acura and Lexus and surprisingly, Dodge. I proceeded to get a full flush/transmission service at high cost (Transmission fluid is pricey) and here I am to this day with a malfunctioning transmission. But not always. It is intermittent. I have driven it for over a year like this and it hasn't gotten worse. After the flush I decided to keep the car and adjust my usage. In my experience it occurs every 250 - 300 miles or so. And when it reappears it stays for about 10 - 20 miles, and then drives ok again. So, I have resolved to use it for non work activity and it drives fine for a couple of months and then have to put up with it for a day and then back to normal. Not ideal for a luxury sedan but I really don't want to put a lot of money into it. I know a lot of people would say it's a matter of time before it explodes but I don't get that feeling from it. Remember, I have had it well over a year with this problem. It feels like a software issue but I am not here to say that for definite. Also, there is a workaround when the transmission is shifting harshly. Put it into manual mode and, on a light throttle, change up before 2000 rpm and the shift will be smooth.

Wow, looked at this tread very late, but I too was having the same issue with my 2012 R-Spec trans. with 118,000 miles on it. This was the second trans. in the car. Had it changed at 50K. Glad I traded in for a 2018 G80 Sport and saved myself $4500.00

I am thinking of buying 2017 3.8 AWD is transmission improved
I have 2009 V8 with ZF which has held up well 128,000 miles

I would like to thank you all for the information you provided on the transmission. I recently purchased a Genesis a couple of weeks ago from a dealership, when I test drove it it had the bumping noise as you all described. I told the general manager about the problem, so he drove the car and found that I was correct. He offered to fix the problem at no cost to me, but he tried to have the transmission company rebuild the dog gone thing for over two weeks. He called me yesterday and apologized, stating that it would need to total replacement and it will be done within the week. The car has everything that I desire in the vehicle and more, so I will update you all when I received it back sometime next week.

I've been having the same issue with my 2012 Genesis 8 speed, from the 1-2-3 there a jerk when it's shifting. I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he said it could be the transmission mount and motor mounts that's causing the jerking. My car has 128k and is in pristine condition other than that, this is the first issue I've had with it. Have any of you heard anything about the transmission mount being worn and possibly causing this jerking when it's shifting?

Just purchased a 2012 Genesis Sedan, then found out transmission has was replaced by Hyundai under warranty in 2015 at 48000km (now has 67000). DO this mean I have nothing to worry about now?
No, you have a lot to worry about. I have 2104 Equus and my transmission was replaced by the Hyundia dealer at 24,000 miles. I now have 75k and the transmission is doing the same thing. I've brought to the dealer 4 times already and on the 4th complainant they said I have a transmission leak comming form the pan but they had to order the gasket. They later received the gasket change it added transmission fluid and it was fine for 3 days now it's back to hard shifting. I'm going back this comming Monday to have them look at the intermediate shaft in my steering column they replaced last week to fix the steering issue I've had for the last 6 months that they could never find.
The Dealership changes my oil everytime and they supposedly check all guilds at every oil change. While I bought the vehicle for the warrenty getting it fixed under warrenty is damn near impossible.

PaulC's post was almost 4 years ago.

However, that little fact doesn't mean you're not correct

I’m guessing your initial warranty has aged out. Your current problem seems to be that you didn’t buy an extended warranty. Why not?

I am having the exact same problem to the original post; shifting erratically when going to 2nd to 3rd gear, and happens more often uphill (or also on downhill, in my case).

The dealership is trying to get me a replacement, as it is often not duplicated (it was duplicated as I left it overnight, which was then tested more thoroughly).

does the 2014 or 2015 fit the 2013 model? mine went out, dealer replacing it for free...lol I bought the car 500 miles later and thank god I went online and read the forum and know the symptom to look for.

I experienced this same thing just this morning for the first time in my 2015 3.8 AWD. It actually scared me a bit when it slammed into gear. I came to the forum to see if this was a common issue.
Yeah I'm having the same issue on a 2015 3.8 sedan. It doesn't do it but every so often, the r.p.m. goes high then it slams into second gear at low speeds. Feel like someone has rear ended you. Has anyone gotten a diagnosed?

Yes...what happened to me..brought it in they did everything and they end up replacing the transmission.

I have a 2017 G80 with 55,000 miles and the dealership has had it for over a month now putting a new transmission in it. It was shifting hard 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd and 4th. Sometimes it was so hard I thought I was rear ended. Both going and coming down in speed.
They are telling me they are having a hard time getting the "gears to mesh". They say it can take alot of miles to get the synchronization correct.
Is this normal and what should I say to them? I'm planning on going there on Tuesday unannounced to see In person. I have been driving a loaner 2022 G70. I don't like it. I want my car back

Not sure why "they" would say "it can take alot of miles to get the synchronization correct." but this statement is codswallop.

In general, in modern automatic transmissions the gears are always "meshed" and there are no synchronizers. The gears and shafts are always spinning. Only the clutches engage and disengage to couple different shafts together to change gear ratios or engage reverse. Solenoids control the hydraulic fluid that powers the clutches. Electronics and software control the solenoids, and the torque converter provides the fluid pressure. The software is self-learning logic driven by inputs. If the inputs get weird, the software can cause the transmission to misbehave. Dealers (and competent transmission shops with Hyundai GDS compatible scan tools) can reset the software and then the transmission will relearn, calming down, after a few miles of normal driving (like 10 or 20 miles). This takes a half-day tops, not 30. So your transmission most likely does not have a software problem. More likely they're waiting on parts.

Dealer service writers/managers will often tell customers anything they think customers want to hear to explain their issues, rather than admitting that they can't get parts, staff quit on them, or whatever. If they think the customer is not mechanically inclined, they'll tell you "gears meshing" instead of "software relearn" or "pressure control solenoid" and anything in between that will make you go away. My dealer tried it on me too once when trying to explain away an attempt to charge me $70 for a $8 air filter. Gotta get that trucoat.

The bottom line is the truth you already know: your transmission is broken, and the dealer is having a hard time fixing it. If it's a warranty job and parts and technicians/skillsets are inadequate or scarce, you might be stuck for months. Common thing these days across the industry, but generally less so among the premium brands. At least they gave you a loaner. While you have that loaner, its floorplan is costing the dealer cost of borrowed money and they cannot sell it. So consider it your own personal ransom you get to keep until they fix your ride.
