If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

127,00miles on 2012 sedan. Started having transmission shifting problem that I’ve read others experienced. Question is a new transmission in my immediate future or should I ‘invest’ in fluid change which looks to be very expensive also. Please advise - I don’t have confidence in my dealership’s service dept

Do you have a reputable local transmission shop? I doubt just a fluid change will fix things with that many miles, but talk to a pro.

Most people have no idea what goes on inside that box so you are at the mercy of the shop. If they showed you a worn part from a transmission they took apart 10 years ago very few here would know . Good luck. Maybe it would be cheaper to trad it in.

Thank you for taking the time to reply....I’m afraid you are right aboutt time to trade in! Ugh.

Probably should have had transmission serviced before 100,000 miles. No fluid is lifetime unless lifetime is defined as 100,000 miles.

I'm in the same boat. I had the fluid change done, the dealer put in fluid for a 4.6 and I made them do it again... they flushed it this time to remove all the old fluid and replace with the correct fluid. They then reset the learning on my transmission computer. After this it shifted decent for a month but now its back to feeling exactly how it used to with rough shifts 1-2, 2-3, & 4-5 and the occasional minor slip in higher gears. I'm just gonna leave it like this and deal with it since it is still working, although my trans should not be failing at 36k miles... In the meantime I will source out a good used unit from a reputable place and have that installed when it inevitably fails completely. But I don't expect that for maybe 2 more years.

you have the 8 speed transmission I believe? If so a drain/fill at the dealership should be around $220 total
This will NOT get all the fluid out but will be a good starting point.
I did this at 80k miles and my transmission is great. Now just need to get the electrical gremlins fixed...

I went for a drain and fill some months back. Our fluid being expensive is a myth. The fluid the 2012+ models use in the 8 speed is genuine Hyundai ATF-SPIV-RR and its $17 a quart. Found this out because they charged me over $350 for the drain and fill until I got home and realized they just filled my trans with 5 quarts of ZF FLUID for a 4.6L model. I called them and they acknowledged their tech put the wrong fluid in and had me come in as soon as possible for a "flush". I went in on my next off day after about 500 miles of driving and they did a trans flush. I warned them I was scared about it cause of the horror stories especially since my trans put out a black fluid when they drained it. The manager said it would be fine and I figured if they messed anything up at this point they'd probably be liable after putting the incorrect fluid in. It does state in the owners manual to make sure you use the right fluid cause incorrect fluid could cause transmission failure.

Anyways, they did the flush and a trans learning reset. It drove funny for a few days while it was learning my habits but then started to smooth out and things were looking better. Well, fast forward to now and the trans is essentially acting exactly as it did before all this was done. I guess I'll just live with it since it is still working at this point.

I have found that my hard shifts can be temporarily corrected by removing the negative battery connection for 5 minutes.

I further determined that if I gently drive the car the shifts will remain smooth and almost undetectable.

If I jack-rabbit start or perform a WOT highway pass it will more often than not cause the harsh shifts to return after the next stop and start.

I believe the programming gets messed up and the learning may need to be re-learned. I checked with the dealer and was told the the re-learning for the trans would cost me $200+

I’m sticking with what I got until it won’t go anymore.

Change the solenoids, worked for me

The 2012+ trans is sealed. How would you change solenoids
My 2012 3.8 gdi genesis got stuck on 5th gear a couple months back, prior to that i was experiencing hard shifting from 1 to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear. I personally dropped the pan and removed my valve body and swapped out my solenoids. Now my car is running great no shifting issues.

That's interesting. Does your model/year have the 8 speed hyundai trans? Cause I've read several people on this forum who experienced issues the tech said was shift solenoids but they say the whole trans has to be replaced to fix it cause it's a sealed trans.

21387Yes i have the 8 speed tranmission. i

Interesting. You sure it's the Hyundai 8 SPD trans and not the ZF? I know the 4.6 had the ZF, thought the 3.8 did too
Nope i drive with the Manuel settings all the time and it goes up to 8th gear, Mine's the lambada 2 engine 333hp.

Maybe these techs are just idiots then cause the only thing that's been stopping me from having my solenoids changed is everyone on here saying it cant be done and the unit needs replacement entirely to fix. If it can be done, I'm definitely doing it cause the way my trans acts up it cant be anything but the solenoids. Every drive it shifts differently. Sometimes smooth, sometimes a mix of smooth and a few rough shifts, sometimes all rough shifts. Has to be the solenoids cause they open/close to let fluid pressure in/out and if they're stuck it could definitely drive and act up randomly. How much were the parts?

About 100 each, there is six. I had the same probalen but figured if i needed a new tranny i might as well open it up and try.

Great well I'm on vacation this week so I'm definitely gonna get this done. It cured it entirely? Doesnt have ANY shift issues anymore? 100% smooth? How about when you engage reverse or go to park from drive or reverse, does/did it clunk? Mine does.

Well i did the change because my car was stuck on 5th gear but after the solenoid change i noticed my trany smoother then before and mine would only clunk when it was stuck on 5th.i think using valvoline max life atf had something to do with it but im not sure.

The fact you answered that with a picture  I'm stoked to see you can do this. Rspected is right i've always ever heard you have to replace the whole trans.
