  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Today was the first day I was actually able to take the Genesis on a good trip, about 150 miles, since purchase. Didn’t notice anything odd and I averaged about 24mpg which I was more than happy with considering it’s the V8 and had 5 passengers including me. On the way home I noticed transmission flared while accelerating onto the on-ramp. The 5-6 shift around 2500rpm slightly bumped to 2700rpm before dropping. No noticeable thud and it settled into 8th at around 70mph with no other issues. The passengers didn’t notice. Around town the transmission shifted fine and noticed no flare. Went back on the on ramp and was able to reproduce. Downshifted with the paddles and flared again when upshifted with the paddles. I would like to reset the adaptive values on the transmission and have it learn my driving style and see if that makes a difference. Any ideas before I take it in for service? It’s a 2015 with 64500 miles, approximately, and no malfunction indicators are lit.

Have it reset and see if it changes anything. I've got 47000 miles and haven't experienced any flaring....might be due to my driving style.

How do I reset? Pull the battery terminals?

Pretty sure that wont work, You have to reset it with one of those fancy scan tools

This is correct. I called the local Genesis dealer and they confirmed this. I tested again this morning. Made sure it was up to temp but could not replicate this problem. It shifted smooth the entire way onto the on ramp. Got off, turned around and tested again…shifted fine. Not sure what to do at this point. Looking for someone who has had the 2g for a while to see if this is normal.

Definitely requires a tech tool. Pulling the terminals and letting the car sit requires a lot of time for any energy in the system to dissipate. Any other methods of discharge could damage any one of the computers on-board.

I have about 98K on my 2015 5.0 - mine occasionally gives weird shifts but goes back to normal. But nothing like a "slip", just a botched shift. Looking to have the fluid & pan filter changed on my next big service.

Has your fluid been changed before?

Supposedly @ 60k.... right before I bought it. Who knows if it was actually done or not. But with high mileage it needs to be changed, NEVER flushed.

Just had it changed (got about 6 qts out of it) & replaced pan/filter - I went and drove it for about 10mi - that seems to have done the trick... Fingers crossed!

60,000mi is the perfect time for a drain and refill.

Until your look at the service intervals in the owner's manual that suggest not changing the fluid ever or at 100k for severe service unless being used as a taxi then its 60k. Most confusing, and since the sealed unit's filter is integral to the pan, most run of the mill service centers don't want to mess with it.

Houston traffic probably qualifies as "taxi duty" - my trans was becoming decidedly unhappy. It was starting to do things like give rough/mistimed shifts and lunging/flaring in certain circumstances. I'm fortunate that the drain & fill and new filter/pan seems to have put things right again. I've always suspected that the 100K "normal" service interval was BS on modern "sealed" transmissions and now I know - before, I'd trade by then anyway. The car market as it is now has caused me to rethink that for now... Not a great big deal, as I still love this car.

My indie shop generally has no problem with installing customer supplied parts as long as they come from a reputable source. But they do draw the line at using generic stuff from Auto Zone, O'Reilly's & etc.

Of course, a fast lube shop wouldn't touch the trans/pan - my mechanic said changing it out on the Genesis was not hard at all. Said that the gasket material was integral to the pan as well - just unbolt the old one & install the new. On a side note, the tech didn't notice any metal shavings in the bottom of the old pan. Guess it was caught just in time... For added piece of mind, I'll likely do another drain & refill w/ pan in about 20k mi or so just to get the rest of the old stuff out.

Fluid changes are cheap, transmissions are not. As for a "sealed transmission", GM touted that back in the 90's and 2000's. Once the car is outside the warranty period, the manufacturer doesn't care what the he!! you do. Any damage or wear is on you. Care to guess how much a replacement transmission is? Either way, having fresh clean fluid in my transmission is a choice I intend to keep. If you don't think that is wise, don't do it.

As for "run of the mill service centers", my local dealership does oil changes and they recommend changing fluids at the prescribed intervals (60,000 miles) for stop-and-go, high operating temperatures in Dallas.
