  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Transmission Stutter

Did that too
Describe the sensation/stutter. Are you flooring the gas and it takes too long to deliver torque?
You're not supplying much information with this thread.

Its during the shift change, I can stop it with heavy acceleration

So with light acceleration the car jerks back?
This might not be a transmission issue. Check the driveline, propellar shaft, and rear differential.

I thought the trans are sealed...never to be changed. I have a 2012 Gen 3.8L.

It is still possible to drain/fill the trans fluid even if the manufacturer claims it's a "sealed" unit.

If you do a traditional drain/fill, you'll get just under 3qts drained. If you decide to replace the trans pan, you'll be able to replace just under 6qts.

The improvement in shift quality will be immediately noticeable. Since you have a 2012 model, you may already have well over 100K on your trans...so I would talk to your mechanic about replacing the fluid before moving forward.

I just tried to make an appointment with the dealer and they gave me one in 6 weeks from now!!

I have a 2013 R-spec with about 80k. Shift is in early phases of being off. Maybe a little hard on some gears maybe to low rpm and performance seems off. I definitely have to take it easier. So, I tried to explain to them that it could be minor now and in 6 weeks it could become major. Then they tried to tell me power train was only 5 years anyway. What a lousy dealership.

I wonder if I have any alternatives or if I should try and chance the fluid first.

Anybody experience transmission stutter at gear changes? I have a 2013 3.8l sedan. The best way to describe the sensation, the gear changes are at too low an rpm. Its avsimilar feeling when you are driving a standard, and its in too high a gear
Just an update on my situation, after complaining to Hyundai on four separate occasions, and 2 dealerships, they determined nothing was wrong.
I guess I am the crazy one here.
I decided to go visit my neighborhood mechanic. He wanted as much detail, as I was willing to share.
One day later, and an $8 can of friction modifier, in the transmission, and problem solved.
Extended warranty my a@!!$$.

Wow.

Just wow.

Wait, what? What is an $8 can of friction modifier? And how did the mechanic get it in the transmission?

My 2014 5.0 w/ 98K miles has had all kinds of strange transmission issues since around 20k miles. Took it to 2 dealers on 3 visits always told "that's just how it drives - see if you can find another 5.0 to compare it to". Basically the car feels like it "rocks" back and forth when driving around 30 mph and trying to modulate speed in traffic - almost like engine mounts are loose. Then when letting off the gas and getting back on it, like when somebody pulls in front of you, causes the RPMs to surge a bit with a big punch like a mild rear end collision. And lastly when hot and making lots of short trips (think errands), shifting from park to drive the transmission makes a double-punch feeling. Like a double engagement, but strong enough to make the car feel like it got bumped.

I'm on the original fluid and not under the warranty (bought used w/ 8k miles), so I'm looking for an independent mechanic to take it to get looked at before it becomes a bigger issue.

I took my 2012 5.0 R spec (51,000mi) for oil change. Afterwards the shifting became harsh. Like it didn't know what gear to pick. In higher gears it felt like it slammed into gear. Big kick.
On hwy trip at time, so took to H dealership in Ohio. They input updated TCU Coding. It helped very little.
But the young Serv Advisor had overheard mechanics just weeks earlier.... If the oil is changed, and you do not put the exact filter in the canister, it can cause issues. It may fit, but it needs certain vent tubes or whatever.....
If not right, then it will trigger codes within engine..., sending bad info to TCU, and it may shift this harsh way.
I was skeptical. Home from road trip, I had oil re-changed. I mentioned issue to mechanic, he was careful to get right filter, and problem immediately dissapeared for about six mos now.
Worth a try.

@bhomer are you saying that the engine oil filter affects the shifting behavior of the transmission?

I've never heard of anything like this, but I guess it's a possibility. It doesn't trigger a check engine light and plugging in an OBD-II reader doesn't show anything. Are there other codes that are collected/read by Hyundai specific readers?

My car does have some strange behavior. I'm on another thread where people (including myself) are getting massive misfires if you only drive the car a very short distance - like if the car is cold and it's moved from the driveway onto the street. It's pretty reproducible in my car and other's seem to have noticed the same issue.

That's of course why I was skeptical..
With the wrong engine oil filter, it apparently can cause this engines computer to send bad codes to the Transmissions computer and it begins shifting oddly.
But I agree, it seems strange that engine oil filters could have an effect on the shifting. It's all to do with computer codes sent back.
I'm not an expert, but this was my experience.

Coincidence does not equal causation.

I had an issue with my 2013 3.8 where my shifts would randomly jerk. My RPMs would rise and the shift would be hard. Dealer originally said new transmission but I just lived with it until I found this TSB.

I showed the dealer the TSB, they agreed it was the likely issue, paid $650. 10k miles later it appears to have solved my issue.
