Trouble with Smart Cruise Control?

So, They've had my car for the 2nd time since yesterday morning. The special tech they flew in from Hyundai spent half the day yesterday with one of the service dept. mechanics driving the car trying to diagnose the issue. They were able to duplicate the downshifting problem over and over again, but they were never able to get any diagnostics to indicate from where the problem is coming.

So, they called me this morning to tell me that Hyundai has approved for them to replace my entire master cruise computer. They had already replaced my radar cruise module and the AEB module. But they tell me this is the main control module that controls all functions of the cruise control. It is supposed to be replaced tomorrow.

If they replace this module and the problem isn't fixed, I'm going to ask for a replacement car. Out of the first three weeks of ownership my car has been in the shop for 8 days now. This has NOT been the experience I hoped to have with this car. :(

I'm sorry about your experience, but I'm glad that HMA is treating it as a serious problem. My 2015 does not have the downshift issue. Nevertheless, It is tuned to get too close and then suddenly slow.

My 2010 behaved differently. In most situations, it would match the car ahead so seamlessly that I would not notice that I was now going 5 mph slower than my set speed. I had to compensate by setting the distance to 1. I still wouldn't notice the slowing, but I would notice I was nearly tailgating.

SO, now this is getting ridiculous! This dealership's service department is pretty much inept. The worst customer service I've ever had while dealing with this problem. The first time I turned my car in to try to fix my cruise control issue, they gave me a 2015 Tucson as a loaner car and it was absolutely filthy on the inside. I had to wipe mud off the back seat before I could even put my gym bag on the seat.

Then the 2nd time I dropped the car off this past Tuesday they were supposed to have another loaner car for me. Instead, the girl behind the counter informed me that the service manager was on vacation all week and he had told her to rent me a car and that I had to wait for the rental company to show up with a car after they called them. She promised me they were literally three blocks up the street and would be there within minutes. I had shown up at the dealership at 7:50 am and I informed her I had an 8:30 meeting at work and that I was a 25 minute drive from work.

30 minutes later there was no one there from the car rental place. I could see the Tucson that had given me the week before in the parking lot outside and I could also see a Subaru Outback that had a big sticker in the back window that said "Customer Courtesy Car for ******** dealership" I asked why I couldn't have one of those loaner cars that I really needed to go because I was going to miss my meeting. She said those loaner cars must already been spoken for and I said "Yes one of them was supposed to be spoken for by me." So, It's now been 45 minutes since I dropped the car off and I am livid. I complained to the girl behind the counter who for the third time calls the car rental place, and they say the guy has been in the dealership lobby waiting for me. He finally comes around to the service dept. in an electric green Chevrolet Spark. Yes, that's right, I just dropped off a Genesis, but this dealership thinks I'm supposed to be just fine driving one of the tiniest econoboxes on the road. Even though the dealership was going to be paying for this, I still had to use my Credit Card to rent the car. I looked at the girl behind the counter and said "You've got to be kidding me. I just dropped off a Genesis and you're putting me in this tiny econobox?" She halfway apologized. I looked at the rep from the car rental place and I said "You're taking me to get a bigger car." So, he drove me to the rental place, which was out of everything except for shitty 2-3 year old compact cars. I ended up in a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, because that was the best thing they had available.

On top of that, the Hyundai Tech they flew in to diagnose my cruise issues was unable to find anything that's causing the problem. So, they were supposed to get in the main cruise module on Thursday and replace it then. I didn't hear a word from the service dept all day Thursday. So, I expected to hear from them today(Friday). When 3 pm rolled around, and I hadn't heard anything I decided to call and inquire about the status of my car. The phone rang and rang, but no one from Hyundai service ever picked up. After waiting for about 5 minutes, a fellow from the Subaru service dept. (their sister dealership beside them) answered. He told me he would walk over to their service dept. and ask them to call me back. An hour went by, and no call. So, I called back again. AGAIN, no one in Hyundai service ever answered. But after about 5 minutes, I got the same guy from Subaru service who apologized and said he would walk back over and make sure they called me.

Sure enough 10 minutes later a girl calls from Hyundai service. She informs me that the part they needed didn't come in until Today and that they did not have a tech to put it in, so they would have to keep the car until Monday and hopefully be able to get it put in then. I guess they weren't even going to call me to let me know what was going on if I hadn't called them.

So, out of my first 4 weeks of ownership, they will have had my car in their service depart for a total of 12 days. I've never in my life has such a horrible experience with a new car and a dealership. I've already written the general manager of the dealership and told him that if the car isn't fixed with the replacement part on Monday, I expect him to be on the phone with Hyundai getting approval for a replacement car.

I think you need to call the district manager, instead of keeping this in-house.
You may get more action that way.

I have met personally with the dealership's general manager. He is going to reimburse me for my first months payment due to the fact that my car has been in the shop for almost half of the first month and also because he agrees that my customer service has been terrible. It's a start. Now let's see if they fix my car, or if I file a lemon law claim this week.

Definitely get Hyundai corporate involved. Be reasonable yet assertive. They will make it right, if my experience is any guide.

SO, the new master Cruise Control Module being replaced had no effect on the problem. The cruise still revs out of control. So, I've contacted Hyundai and they have opened a case to buy my car back. I LOVED this car and I so wanted it to be fixed. But now I'm concerned about getting another one. Is all of this technology truly tested and reliable? I don't want to have them give me a replacement Genesis and then have to deal with the same issues again. I have tried to find reliability data on these cars, but this generation is so new there really isn't any out there. Any recommendations you guys could give me before I make a final decision would be greatly appreciated! :(

Personally if they offered a swap I would take it. No one else has reported this issue so hopefully it was just your car.

I have to say I have been fascinated reading this thread trying to figure out what would make the car behave in this manner. I am almost thinking the transmission computer is at fault and refusing to upshift.

At any rate, as you have a V6 it should be no problem getting a replacement car. Just have them swap yours for another one. I have to think your experience is 1 in a million. And if the 2nd car is not to your liking, sell it back and be done with them. Perhaps you can get them to give you an extended warranty with a replacement car?

I wonder if they will let you do an extended test drive before taking possession of the replacement. Maybe you can drive it on the same road(s), where you had the issue to be sure it is free of that defect (and others).

If you really like the car, I would replace it with another Genesis.

Hyundai will not replace a vehicle, but under certain circumstances will agree to repurchase one. Then it is up to you to determine your replacement. (I agree that another Genny would be low risk and you might even get a better deal this late in the model year.) No way do you need an attorney unless the manufacturer is being unreasonable--JMHO of course. The regional rep will do the right thing if you follow the process.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you are right, Genesisimo. The General Manager of my dealership says he's already forwarded over all of their service records for the car, and he thinks that this will be a pretty open and shut case where they will buy the car back. I do think I will get another Genesis, but I'm going to ask to bring the car home for a day just to make sure I have time to test all of the features and make sure everything seems to be working as it should.

I've scoured this forum and the internet and I have yet to find another reported issue of cruise control acting this way on a Genesis. So, I am hoping this is the one in a million.

celltech, I had at first thought about the transmission being a culprit. But I'm not sure about that, being that the car's transmission performed flawlessly at all times EXCEPT for when I turned the cruise control on.

I do believe I'm going to try another Genesis one last time and hope for the best. I would get another V6 AWD as they are pretty much a must here in VT for winter driving. My dealership still has an Ibizi Blue Ultimate V6 AWD on the lot. I might just upgrade to the that, especially if they'll give me a special deal because of all the hassle I've been through with my first car.

Start the mfg's buyback & arbitration process with assistance of a lemon law attorney, obtain a loaner, be patient and press for a 2017 model replacement configured similar to your 2016.

I have started the manufacturer's buy back process already, but at this point I don't think I'll need at attorney. The General Manager of my dealership feels confident this is a pretty clear cut case where Hyundai will buy back the car.

I don't want to wait for the 2017 models, however, as that would mean being in a loaner car for at least three months. The 2017 models are not supposed to come out until July. Also, I'm not sure my dealer will even carry these cars under the new "Genesis" Brand. They've told me that Hyundai is going to require dealers to order a minimum of 25 cars a year to remain a Genesis dealer once the brand separates from Hyundai. They only average selling about 8 Genesis sedans a year, so they will probably not become a Genesis dealer. There are no other Hyundai dealers in the state of VT big enough to become a dedicated Genesis dealer. So, I'm fine going with a 2016 model, especially if they offer me a good deal because of all the trouble I've had with my first car.

So, I talked to the General Manager of my Hyundai Dealership over the weekend. He informed me that Hyundai has requested an invoice for my car, which he says is an excellent sign that they are going to buy the car back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I just want another Genesis! One that works as it's supposed to and is safe!

Good luck to you on this. You have suffered more than anyone should have. If you get another Genesis, it's almost impossible that you'll have a similar experience. I love mine.

Yes, Hyundai is creating a separate "luxury" brand called Genesis, similar to the way that Toyota created Lexus and Honda created Acura. I hope this doesn't affect how your problem is resolved.

So, my car has been in the shop a total of 26 days today, but I finally heard from Hyundai. They are, in fact, buying my car back. The general manager of my dealership also talked to me today and asked me to be patient, saying that usually the process takes a couple of weeks, as so many people have to sign off on everything. I plan to replace it with another Genesis. The dealership has an Ibizi Blue 3.8 AWD Ultimate on the lot and I'm planning on moving up to that. But before I sign anything, I will be taking that car home for a day and testing everything out thoroughly to make sure everything is working just as it should! So, at least it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks like this. :)
