  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ultimate Package and Text Message Reading

My 2015 Ultimate has the original Nav maps. Do I have access to this feature? If I don't, do I need to upgrade my maps to get it?

If you have an iPhone, you have access to Siri through the voice command button. Not sure about android phones

looks like this feature works on a 2018 Sport with the 9.2" and the new update.

it appears to be a Bluetooth function, once Carplay takes over (phone gets plugged in) Bluetooth gets disabled and you can't read them only listen to Siri dictation.

which is fine with me, it is how I have been using the system since day 1

Yes, you buy the upgrade from mapnsoft and do the upgrade. It does all the necessary software.

When was the current map version released? Anyone know when the next version will be released? What is the current version number?

Thanks for everyone's help answering my questions.

12.5 was released this month.

Any idea on when Version 13 will be released?

12.5 JUST came out a week ago and we are already worried about the next version? I don’t understand.

OEM GPS systems IMO are pretty worthless, google maps or apple maps via CarPlay are completely up to date vs. and OEM system which is 18-24 months behind the modern world in terms of POI and Street changes.

The only benefit I find from the OEM system is the live traffic info, which has saved me a few time from sitting in traffic, but once the free data services are gone so is that so again, worthless OEM, as WAZE has the same traffic info, it’s just less convenient to access.

The OEM system is integrated into the HUD which is fantastic if you have it. Also you just get in the car and drive. Leave your phone in your pocket. No fumbling with usb cords or mounting your phone or squinting at a tiny screen.

With CarPlay. Google, apple, and waze maps all use the 9.2” screen. So no squinting, and the HUD is irrelevant I don’t look at the screen or maps, all I care about is the voice prompt, with CarPlay it comes over the speakers, and works whether the phone is in music mode or maps mode. I familiarize myself with the route prior to driving, comes from years of using a thomas guide paper map. Still carry one in the car as well. I know where I am going before I start the route, I don’t depend on the GPS to do anything but remind me when I need to make a turn or merge to a new highway.

99% of the time when I drive my screen is turned off via the “display” button aka screen saver. I don’t use the screen when I drive if I can avoid it, I concentrate on driving, not being distracted.

I have a phone dock, takes 1 second to slide the phone into the dock, auto starts CarPlay, so there no fumbling with cables

I don’t drive with anything in my pockets, it’s uncomfortable, travax wallet goes into cup holder, phone into dock, I don’t carry keys. Genesis smart key is in the wallet.

So I guess that’s why you don’t understand. Carrying a Thomas Guide pretty much says it all. No offense, but IMO you are an outlier.

Maybe, but I stand by my statement OEM GPS systems are 18-24 months behind apple or google maps. Therefore they are pretty worthless when it comes to POI’s and new developments.

I guess that depends on how fast things change where you are driving. Not much new in LA where I drive and I preprogram the POI destinations so I don’t need any on the fly.
Btw, what makes you think they are 18-24 months out of date? I would not think they are as up to date as external system but 2 years seem a bit long.

I know the process. I did subcontracting work for Alpine when they were making the RB1 and REC units for Chrysler between 2003 and 2008. I worked directly with Navteq and Alpine on the factory programming integration for the navigation systems. The update cycle is started roughly 24 months before the release and the cutoff for additions to the database occurs at 16-18 months before the release, and this is basically industry standard scheduling for vehicle OEM systems. Some makes may be only 14-18 months behind in there database if they have 2 updates a year, but as a general behavior within the industry 18 months is the cutoff for changes or additions.

Version 12.5 for our cars was likely ‘closed’ to changes around October 2017, in reviewing some of the POIs in my area I can confirm that 2 stores that opened in a new mall in September 2017 are in the DB, but 4 restaurants that opened between October and December 2017 in the same mall are not.

POI updates and street updates are totally different things. POIs change often!
Not sure about Genesis but on my Acura, when I updated as soon as it was available, new streets that were less than 6 months old showed up just fine including new highway exits and flyovers!

Just wish my 2015 Genesis Ultimate had CarPlay.

it's all part of the same database, and all under the same submission requirements, there are multiple companies that make navigation discs for car manufacturers, and one car makers might utilize multiple companies as a result of different third party manufacturers for different models or model year infotainment units.

There is also Local, County, State, and Federal resources involved in submitting the data to the National Coordination Office, which is the Federal Government's Executive Committee who is responsible for collecting GPS-related information from multiple state and federal agencies to support the operations of Space Base Global Positioning Systems.

While developers in your area may have submitted the documentation to their State Regulatory offices for new developments, not all do so, there is still a new development in my area of Los Angeles, that has 120 Townhomes that have been occupied since 2015 and the Genesis data and my Wife's Toyota GPS Data, both still show as the previous Ford/Lincoln Dealer that occupied the space from the 1960s until 2007.

Google and Apple Maps should this as a residential neighborhood now complete with the new addresses.

OEM navigation systems are IMO worthless, they are expensive to update (Genesis aside at least for the first 3 years) and they are never completely up to date.

Systems like CarPlay and Android Auto are the wave of the future for vehicles, their update cycles are monthly, and they utilize a device that is not locked to the car but allows projection to the vehicle screen, there is no point any longer of including antiquated and outdate OEM built in GPS systems.

So which is it? Some say it is tied with the update, some aren't. I bought a used 2015 Ultimate 5.0, didn't get the update, don't have that feature.

  1. Siri Eyes free READ the message to you via blue tooth = prior to update
  2. View the Messages on the screen while in park = part of 12.5 update.

don't know when #1 was added, so if you have version 10.XX or earlier, it might not be there, I had version 11.XX when my 2018 was purchased and it was there, updated by dealer to 12.0 and it was there, updated to 12.5 and got the text/messages on screen option.

Yes, people are getting this mixed up with two different features. The Genesis message function and the Siri eyes free message function. This post was originally meant in regards to the Genesis message function.
