Very Bad Mileage

I read plenty of comments on other pages about the Genesis 2.0T mileage and why they thought some get bad mileage. They generally said the driving habits were the problem. So, I took the car to the interstate, set the cruise at 60 MPH and drove five miles on a flat surface. I got a constant 17.5 MPG. Heck, my gigantic Expedition gets better than that. I noticed the tach at 60 MPH was just over 3G. It sounded like the engine is reving too high and it needed another gear to upshift too. I would like to hear from others about what they are getting for mileage. I love the car and it's performance, but the mileage makes me want to leave it in the garage.

Is this typical of the 2.0T to get such bad mileage, by the way it has an automatic transmission.
 
You might have to drive farther than 5 miles to really get a good idea of the mileage.

Don't go by the ga. in the car. Fill the tank up. Record the odometer reading, drive the distance, fill it up again, record the gallons required to fill it up, record the miles on the odometer, subtract the first odometer reading from the second odometer reading and divide the miles traveled by the gallons it took to fill the tank. That is the only way to get a true mpg figure.

My Coupe is a 2011 V6 track. Even with me, my wife, my clothes, her clothes (and she takes a weeks worth for a couple days) and my toys I hope to use at the shooting spot at home - and driviing 75 to 80 mph on the interstate on the way to WV I get around 25 mpg. I wish it got more, but it doesn't. Some day (probably not) I'll drive the speed limit and see what it gets.

Your 2.0 turbo should get at least as good, if not better, mpg.

3000 rpm at 60 mph seems high. Of course I’m driving a 3.8 2011 sedan which turns about 1800 rpm at 60 mph and seem to be the sweet spot for speed vs. mpg. Are you running a stock rear ratio.
 
I once had a new car that would not shift into the highest gear. Had to take the mechanic for a drive so he could see that I was not crazy. After an adjustment of the linkage it was fixed.

Do you get a sudden decrease in speed as if the brakes are applied or you are dragging something when you take your foot off the gas?
 
Thanks for the reply. The car is stock, I checked with others and they are running around 2K RPM at 60 so I am taking it in for a checkup.

Thanks for your input. I did the convential measurement by filling the tank and recording the miles vs gallons used several times on this car. It never exceeded 17.5MPG. Another member mentioned having had this problem with another car and had the dealer check it out. They found a linkeage maladjusted and repaired the problem.
The car is driven by my 17 year old son so he was not alerted by the high RPM at cruising speed since he doesn't have past experience and this is his first car. I took it for a drive to see why the MPG was so low, I wanted to make sure his driving habits were not the problem. I saw the tach reading higher than I thought it should. Then thanks to the forum I read the comment about the adjustment on another car. I now have a scheduled maintenance appointment with Hyundai which I hope will fix the problem.

If you haven't already, reset the MPG on the dash after you settle your speed/power for whatever test you're doing. After the system recalibrates, it will be very accurate for what you're doing.

Also, do NOT run some low-grade low-octane hi-ethanol gas. You'll never get good mileage or performance or longevity from cheap gas. For the 3.8, Hyundai "recommends" premium top-tier fuel (says so right in my owner's manual), but I'm not sure about the 2.0T, and the recommendation/warnings were different by year.

So, if I'm getting 20-28, and usually 22-26, you should be getting 10MPG more ;)
