  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

For some reason I am having a problem with the voice recognition system. I have a V6 Tech package. When I press the voice button on the steering wheel I get the usual "beep" which means it is ready for me to speak. But no matter what I say it does not respond back. For instance: if I say "navigation commands" or "phone commands" it waits a few seconds and says something like "possible responses are" and then says what the possible responses are. In other words, it is not hearing my commands. I have tried turing the car off and restarting the car. I have tried a normal voice. I have tried screaming. The same thing happens if I press the phone button on the steering wheel.

This has happened once before on my way to the Miami Genesis driving event in August. When I was on my way home it worked fine. Now it is happening again. Back in August I thought it was because my partner had turned the volume down as low as it would go. But I have checked the volume it it is set where I usually have it.

Not sure how you do it, but I seem to recall reading there is a mute function somewhere, probably related to the phone. Either way, it turns off the mic. Just a thought on somewhere to look.

I just went out to check if there is a mute button.

There is a volume control for the car's voice. It can be turned down so it can't be heard at all. I don't see any button to mute the voice of the driver.

But guess what? It works now. This seems to be a sometimey thing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.

It would appear from the lack of responses that this is not happening to others.

I've started having problems with the Tech package about three weeks ago. Back then, the problem was intermittent but now it is consistent.

From a clean start (car powered off for a while), I can use all center console functions (NAV, phone, AM/FM/XM, Info, iPod) without problems.

The problems start when I use voice activation. Otherwise everything seems to be fine. As I mentioned in another posting (No sound from speakers), when I press the voice activation button (on steering wheel), the system either makes a pregnant pause before responding or says "Please Wait". In either case, after waiting for 30 sec or more, the system usually comes back and takes my voice command. In a few cases, it never responds. Regardless of what happens after I initiate voice activation, I end up losing sound from my speakers and the iDrive knob doesn't work. No matter what I do afterward, I can't recover either function. Note, that even if I turn off the car and turn it on again immediately, the iDrive is still dead but at least I have sound. The iDrive problem goes away if I turn the car off and leave it off for a while.

For those with the problem, can you let me know how long you have had the car? I've had mine since Aug 2008. I'm wondering if this could point to a software design issue with the voice activation software. Funny though, it worked fine when I bought the car, but now the problem appears to be very repeatable.

Anybody with a similar problem out there?

I paid for mine on the last day of July. Took possesion the next day.

Yesterday my radio quit so I pulled over to try to figure out what happened. I turned off the engine and restarted it and the radio worked. As soon as I put it in gear the radio quit again. The I noticed that there seemed to be a phone call coming call through. I tried to answer the phone but got nothing. When I got home I looked at the phone to see who called. I didn't speak to the person until this morning and I asked him if he called yesterday and he said no that I had called him. I have an iPhone and I don't have his number entered into the car's phone book and the phone can't dial a number when it's locked so I am completely baffeled as to how the phone called him. That does tell me why the radio quit but I don't know how the phone made a call when it was locked.

Probably ATT delivering an old message from a downtime. I sometimes get voice mails a week or 2 after the actual call.
(iPhone also)
Now about the radio...

Not exactly the same problem but this morning when I pulled out of the garage my XM came on to a station I have never listened to. When I tried to change it back it only cycled through 3 stations all 600 series. I turned it to FM. Later in the day I tried XM again and it came on to my old station! Maybe poor sat coverage but strange that it would jump to 600+ stations. Not sure what happened (Gremlins?) but its OK now. Picked up the car mid December.

anyone have a list of the voice commands that can be used, i know you have say certain commands a particular way, any cheat sheets?

Try page 242 of the DIS Manual to start.
