During the video portion they did mention that the 5.0 model had an 8 speed automatic tranny.

However, Hyundai is offering the 5.0L Tau in a new Genesis model that debuts in the first quarter of 2011 that fits under our cap.
Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd.: 4.6L DOHC V-8

It was in this new, still-secret version of the Genesis that we tested the 5.0L. Because it will be introduced in the first quarter, the new model still meets the competition’s long-standing rules. But this is the first time in 17 years of judging we tested a vehicle adorned in full camouflage.

Even so, the disguised exterior allowed us to focus even more intently on this utterly outstanding V-8.

The experience left some editors almost speechless. “Delicious,” was all Ward’s Automotive Reports Editor Eric Mayne could mutter.

Mmmmmm.....more power!!!

The 5.0L V8 is coming in 1st Quarter of 2011? I thought the 2012 Genesis was coming on summer 2011. Are they going to put the 5.0L V8 in the 2011 Genesis as well or just 2012 Genesis? Well anyways, the earlier the better. If this article is right, latest should be end of March.

This car, originally called the 2011 refresh will be released in Korea on December 29, 2010
as the 2011 refresh, however due to Hyundai marketing decisions, MONEY this car will be
released in the US market as 2012 about 6 months early for about $4,000 more than the 2011 which is only 385 hp six speed as opposed to 429 hp eight speed and yes Hyundai has been working on this car for a while but their testing was not ready for the 2011 release.

I serious doubt price will go up $4k... Same or slightly higher would be my guess.

Those are the pics of the engineering mule Genesis from around 2007. I saw them several years ago when the first Genesis rumors were circulating. As to the price it will almost certainly go up 8%-10%. The weak dollar and the natural progression of prices at work and the fact that there has been no price increase for 3 model years. Those with 2009, 2010 and 2011 models will be the winners because the next price increase will soften the depreciation. The price can go up that much and the car will still be a bargain because the competition has increased prices as well. I can see the Genesis 5.0 at around 47,500 to 48,000 fully equipped. It will still be less expensive than the similar cars from BMW, MB, Lexus, Infiniti. Its position in the top 5 in sales in its category means the car has credibility and can command the higher price. To those who wait for the 5.0 be sure it is worth the extra money to you because it will definitely cost more.

$48k is too much for Genesis.
I'll take M37/BMW 335is/335d/G37S fully loaded for that price.. Lots of great choices @48-50k..

335i equipped like the Genesis lists for $55600. It is not in the size class of the Genesis and does not have the reliability of the Genesis. 550i lists for $70500 for similar equipment. That is for less horsepower and room and 5 series horrible resale value. I have and have had BMWs and my Genesis has been stellar in its value and reliability. There is no BMW that can match the Genesis over all in equipment and price. People buy BMWs for the driving experience, the frequent need for the dealer experience and to impress their friends but never because they are a great value. As it is the precept of never own a BMW not on warranty applies here and mine will be gone before that.

The ceiling for Genesis features/price is going to be set by the Equus as much as by competitors like BMW and Mercedes. The closer the Genesis gets to the Equus in cost and amenities, the harder it'll be to sell Hyundai's new flagship. Of course, Hyundai can also add to the Equus' price and features, but that's not going to be easy to do as they try to establish the brand.

One would think so, but if this was the case you'd think they'd reserve the 5.0L 8-speed for the Equus. It would seem a pity to have the Equus' potential lunch eaten by Hyundai's own Genesis, but after a careful comparison of Equus Signature and Genesis V8 w/tech I don't see anything close to $15K worth of additional cost -- Maybe half that if you despise the dealership experience and consider the valet-type service. (I, personally, have had only good experiences thus far with my Hyundai dealership -- though I'm admittedly only three months in.)

Wouldn't a bigger price tag on the newer Genesis still drop the 09-11 Genesis'. Plus there are supposed to be a few changes that are going to be in the 2012 Genesis so that should also make the older models lower in price because of some of the new techs available in only 2012 models. I also read that they were going to still have the 4.6L as an option so there would be 3 different type of Genesis models. A 3.8, 4.6 and 5.0 but I am not sure on this.

having a smaller less powerful engine it what is a land yacht/limo isn't a big deal... no one is buying an Equus for as a performance sedan.
the genesis needs the 5.0 to keep up with the Twin turbo 550 and the M56.

As for pricing.. 48k would be 6K more than the 09 sticker... 3 years later (if they call it a '12... sounds right..
big increases in hp/torque , 8sp tranny , I just hope they don't mess with the look too much..

Most impressive is not the increase in power, but rather the improvement in gas mileage that is achieved with the power.

BMW did this for years, but recently seemed to run out of room to continue the combo benefit, and went to the turbocharged engine, that has been less reliable that their long standing naturally aspirated engines. I expect the 5.0 will be as reliable as the 4.6, in which case the Genesis will sell at $48K with little trouble.

Here's why; I was ridiculed for buying my Genesis, just a year ago. People were startled that someone who liked cars as much as I do would buy one, but now I have people telling me they have bought one because of MY sales job. And if they've ridden with me...

We forget that we are the ultimate salesman in the growth of the Hyundai Luxury Car segment.

The car magazine I read is Car and Driver, and it's taken me 35 years to understand that they discount reliability (though they may be having a change of heart, their recent longterm review of the BMW 7 series massacres the car over the frequency of breakdowns, and the cost of service).

The time of PRESUMED German Car Supremacy is passing, I feel, as more and more of us realize that a seachange is underway.

The longer I own my Genesis, the more I appreciate the vehicle.

If they really wanted to increase sales in the US Northeast, however, I think Hyundai will have to come up with a bulletproof all-wheel drive vehicle. I am spending Christmas in the midwest, and the majority of later model luxury cars are all wheel drive.

Another challenge for the 5 liter vehicle, which doesn't seem to have to weigh more than the 4.6, would be some attempt to achieve the better handling of a 50/50 weight distribution over the axles, that would make the big engined car a load of fun to drive around town, as well.

The AWD is scheduled for 2013 along with the 'next generation' body change.
Hyundai already has AWD in other vehicles so putting it in the Genesis should be no big deal. It is anyones guess as to whether the 2012 will offer AWD.
I believe it will because weathering two price increases in a row will be a challenge.

The Equus price won't be static as well. It will eventually increase. $15k difference in not nearly as much as the spread between the 5 series and the 7 series or the E class and the S class. That is a escalating price spread for not nearly as much difference in equipment levels. Hyundai will end up being like Lexus. When the time is right and the premium cars are accepted as such then Hyundai pricing will shadow Lexus as Lexus shadows BMW and MB.

The key word is eventually. Hyundai is going to have to step up to the plate to sell the Equus at the mid $60k range or higher. They're going to have to offer more than just what you can get in a well-equipped E350, say. Their dealers will also have to improve: better facilities, staffed by knowledgeable salespeople and techs who are enthusiastic and know about the cars they sell and service.

This will apply to the Genesis as its price rises, too. Many of us early adopters have been willing to put up with the "Hyundai" dealer experience to get a car that we recognize as a great value. But, as time goes on, buyers are going to demand more, including things like no-questions-asked loaner cars for service, which many dealers don't provide currently.

As far as dealer experience, I would prefer to have much less of it than I have had with the BMW. With the Genesis handily outselling all Audi, Infiniti and Acura models and only being beaten by the BMW 3, Lexus ES, MB C class and Cadillac CTS, all long time and established in the market, the Genesis is gaining credibility in the market. The salon experience at the dealer costs money and is not free. I personally would prefer to spend less time at the dealer and not have to pay for the salon and see the savings in the price of the car. The concept of the Equus, where you would never need to go to the dealer for anything beats all rest for convenience.

Great Idea, how about a kid that drops off your loaner and takes your car back to a third rate, inexpensive dealer to be worked on!!

Personally I think Hyundai will do something with the suspension in the 2012 model as well.
