  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

water in the trunk

I'm glad I read this thread before I took mine for its first hand wash. Most car washes, IMHO, are spotty about opening the trunk and cleaning around the lip. Needless to say, I was not disappointed - they had not opened the trunk. I opened it halfway, to let all the water drain out, then got them to clean up the excess water with a chamois.

The comment from the supervisor was, "Wow - we had not idea that Hyundai made a car like this!" Nice... :D

I noticed this when I picked up the car at the dealer, they had just washed it and when opened the trunk the water started dripping in. I hope Hyundai can fix it.

I noticed this the first time I washed it, while it is annoying its not a big deal. We have the trunk mat so that makes cleaning up the water easy, but I can see how if the trunk mat was not there and it soaked the carpet there could be a smell issue

I live in Seattle where it rains all the time and have been dealing with this issue. I am pretty disappointed. I am an IT Consultant and keep documents, my laptop, and often client computer equipment in the trunk. Not cool. At least it always drips on the same exact spot. I dont have the trunk mat but am thinking about putting one in. I think I will also try to use the cargo net to keep the electrical goods towards the back of the trunk. I havnt tried the 1/2 open trick but will. Sadly...I had almost the exact same issue with my 02 Sonata. Only the Sonata often leaked rain water into the trunk without me needing to open it.

Hey guys,

This is such a minor issue, I'm surprised that its still around. All my cars that I've owned for the past ten (or twenty) years do this. Just raise the trunk lid and wipe everything dry.

I agree that it is a minor issue (especially if you know it and can take precautions before opening the trunk), but I disagree about most other cars having same issue.

doesn't it rain in Korea? How did they not see this?

/waiting for the daily South Florida summer rains to alert me to this issue

I had owned cars from five different manufactures. They all dripped water into the trunk when the trunk lid was being opened. Just hope Hyundai will be the first to find a solution.

For me this is a big issue and unless it's fixed by the 2011 model, as much as I love my Genesis, I'm afraid I'll be switching teams again and choosing something else.

In all the automobiles I've owned this has never been an issue. As a musician, I don't like water dripping on my instruments or books. It caught me totally by surprise and ruined some sheet music I had and water spotted an expensive leather valise. I will be running any prospective car purchase through a car wash on my test drive to check it out in the future.

Having a black car I run my car through the car wash 2 to 3 times a week. Having to constantly watch over the attendants so that they don't open the trunk lid all the way to let the excess run off to prevent what I have packed in my trunk being ruined, is a very big hassle.

Never thought I'd have a luxury car that required a "rain drip" bucket in the trunk for runoff. It's like I live in a slum!

This could probably be easily fixed by putting draining hole just behind the trunk lid when closed.

Not that I would suggest anyone do that themselves but I wouldn't be surprised to see them appera in future model-years.

I have a Toyota Camry that has the same problem. If you open the lid fully the water will drip into the trunk.

Same here. I just thought that WAS basic car design. Open trunk, water goes in. I haven't previously owned any luxury cars (at least during the decade they were considered luxury). Hmmm, now that you have mentioned it, it would be nice to be able to just open the trunk and not have the rain flow in.

Living in rainy Vancouver BC i often open the trunk and water runs in out of the trunk lid all over my shopping etc.I have now fixed this problem to my satisfaction so will pass on my fix.
Its a little time consuming but well worth the effort.
First remove the trunk liner
,hardest part is releasing the cover on the lock.Just inseart a thin bladed knife between the lock at the back side and it will release.Remove the light assembly, you will find the trunk lid is in two pieces so water can run between and traps water because the drain holes are not in the very bottom.I purchased some DUM-Dum from the local parts store,it comes in 1ft by 1/8th strips. You need to put the sealer around the top of the light and down the side with the black plastic, replace the light and also seal from the bottm of the light all around the bottom of the trunk lid,it needed 2 or 3 strips in some places to fill the gap.Any water that runs of the lid now runs in the channel and away from the contents.

i have a Mercedes C240 it happens in that too if the trunk is wet and i open it some water flows in my trunk....

Would it not have been easier to elongate the drain holes? or would this create a new problem?

I'm not sure how the bottom of the lid was sealed, hopefully no water was trapped somewhere that may cause a corrosion problem.

I noticed water in my 2010 genesis trunk before, but it was not much. Today I opened the trunk and the spare tire compartment contained 3 inches of water. I found the small drain plug near the tail end of the car, removed it and water drained out. The remaining water had to be drained using the large drain plug nearest to the rear seat. I replaced the drains and hope this issue is resolved by the dealer soon.

I had to deal with hurricane Irene in Virginia and we did receive alot of rain. We have more storms coming, so I hope this is not a constant issue that I have to deal with.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2012 and I have the same problem...after rain, or like yesterday, right after I washed it, I opened the trunk and I noticed it. The trunk lid is short and it raises up kind of high and vertical, and water drips off the edges into the trunk. So the problem is the same on the 2012 model. On the old big pig cars, the trunk lid is wide and flat and does not raise that high, hence the difference.

No change at Kim Jong's factory for the 2013, water still flows into the trunk. I have a MB E350 that never did this, as well as a BMW 5 series that did not either.

This is my first car that has this design "issue". While not a huge deal, it is disappointing in a car like this. Others that do not have this issue:
2011 Acura TL
2002 VW Passat
1999 Acura TL
1997 Volvo S70
1994 Honda Accord
1990 Honda CRX

Discovered 6" of water in my trunk yesterday after a week of heavy rain here in Texas. It was dripping in under the interior trim next to the battery. Another 3" and the battery would have shorted out which would be a disaster to the electrical system. Taking it in the dealer this week. Can not wait to find out what they have to say about it.

stevenleehogan- do you happen to have an update from what your dealer found?

I have been experiencing this exact trunk leakage problem and am ripping my hair out looking for the source. It is not from run off from open lid. I'm finding standing water after heavy rains and the exterior has already dried when I check. My dealer here already had the car for a full day and said they couldn't replicate the issue. Any insight is greatly appreciated!
