If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. water in the trunk

One of my cars (and I think it may have been my 2010 Genesis) was delivered without a body plug that belonged in the spare tire well. IIRC, the plug was supposed to be installed at PDI and I found it laying in the tire well. Any chance that's what's happening for you?

stevenleehogan- do you happen to have an update from what your dealer found?

I have been experiencing this exact trunk leakage problem and am ripping my hair out looking for the source. It is not from run off from open lid. I'm finding standing water after heavy rains and the exterior has already dried when I check. My dealer here already had the car for a full day and said they couldn't replicate the issue. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Makes me wonder what your dealer doing to replicate the problem. If you soak the car with a hose when it's dry, does water accumulate in the trunk? If so, I would shoot video of that and show that to your dealer so that they can do the same thing.

Thanks for the replies. All the plugs are installed and it happens when the car is parked so I'm pretty certain it's coming from above the trunk somewhere.

I soaked it for a while with the hose and didn't see obvious leakage- tried covering all obvious spots. Deck lid, tail lights, rear window, etc. Looked through rear seat to trunk pass through with a light while water was running.

Same night soaking rain comes through. Standing water in the morning. Thinking video is probably the best bet. Maybe have to go to a car wash with phone recording in the trunk and paper towels down to pinpoint where is wettest.

Thanks again guys- I am certainly open to any other ideas and will update if I find the trouble spot

@Reno: If this happens every time there's a soaking rain, the fact that you couldn't replicate the problem with a hose probably means that:

  1. The hose wasn't aimed at the spot where the leak is occurring, and/or
  2. The rate of water entry is very low
What happens when the car goes through an automatic car wash? If there's water in the trunk, #1 above is likely correct. If there's no water in the trunk, #2 is probably the explanation. I would try the car wash as the next step. At least you'll end up with a clean car. :)

If you do get water in the trunk after the car wash, I'd go back to the hose, but I'd make sure that the entire back half of the car is covered. While you're doing that, someone can watch what's happening via the pass through and start video recording when they see water coming in. I think you'll have more success with that than by leaving a phone or other video recording device in the trunk, since it may not be aimed at the spot where the water is coming in. I'd also be concerned about it getting wet.

im currently looking to buy a genesis rspec.. this could be a deal breaker for me

I have no problems with water in the trunk. Only drips in when you lift the trunk lid but that is easy to stop.

How'd you go about resolving the problem ?

The solution to the minor problem of water dripping into the truck area when opening a wet trunk is to use a plastic "trunk tray" like the Hyundai one, or the weathertech model.
This will keep the trunk carpet dry, an prevent any "wet carpet" smells. It will also keep items like the jack rust free.
This will not solve any leaking trunk problems.

If it has been raining a lot, open the trunk a few inches and shake it up and down to drain some water from the lip. Then (with trunk still open just a few inches) grab a rag that you keep just inside the trunk and wipe the edges of the trunk lid. Unless you live in Seattle, I don't think it's that big a of a problem.

A rubber trunk tray will not prevent anything already in the trunk sitting on top of the trunk tray from getting wet, although I guess it works fine if the trunk is usually empty. I tend to keep some stuff in my trunk all the time.

This is my solution as well.

I had a 2009 and currently a 2013 and both have the same problem of water dripping into the trunk when opening after it rains. Firstly I have a rubber mat in both but the REAL problem is the dripping not the after affect.
Does the 2015 with the new design have the same problem. Anyone with a 2015 please comment.

I find the problem the aggravating in a car of the type/$$$$$

For a variation on this, open the trunk about a third of the way open for several seconds. Most of the water will drain off down channels at the sides. *Then* open it all the way. Maybe still a few drips, but usually not that bad.

doesn't it rain in Korea? How did they not see this?

/waiting for the daily South Florida summer rains to alert me to this issue

The Average Annual Precipitation in Ulsan, South Korea where the Genesis is manufactured is 50.28 inches. Most of it falls in May through September. Ulsan has an average 98 rain days per year.

For comparison, Fort Lauderdale has an average annual precipitation of 65.75 in. with most of it occurring during the wet season from May through October. Fort Lauderdale has an average 145 rain days per year.

same issue here....water is somehow getting in my trunk when the lid is closed. It rained last night. This morning I opened my trunk and my items next to the passenger side taillight were wet.. However the water is getting in, it seems to only be coming in just above the battery
