If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Weird issues with 2009 Genesis: Flaky Accel & Rearview cam

I have two intermittent problems with the 2009 Genesis and am wondering if others have observed them:

1. The rear view cam is flaky. It works about 2/3 of the time, but the rest of the time I see only a black screen.

2. At highway speeds, sometimes it feels like the car isn't getting quite enough gas. It sort of "hangs back", almost as if I am driving into a strong headwind, even though I haven't altered the pressure on the acceleration at all. The effect is not strong enough to feel like a safety issue, but it is extremely annoying.

I asked the dealer to investigate item #2 and they said they couldn't replicate the problem and seemed dubious about the reality of the problem. Which ticked me off because there is *no way* I am imagining it. But it is not a constant thing. Some days the problem is pretty well absent, and some days it is obvious enough that passengers in the car can feel it.

Anyone have any experience with either of these problems?

I don't recall anyone complaining about problem #2 on the V6. You might want to drive some demos to see if it behaves differently.

I am confused that the passengers can feel it. You could obviously give the car more gas an get it up to speed. I could understand passengers feeling a wind buffeting the car from the side, but a lagging. What would that feel like to a passenger.

Very fair question. Probably they would never spontaneously notice it--at least, I would guess that a passenger could not readily distinguish it from uneven driving behavior on the part of the driver.

But several times I have told my wife "OK, it's happening again.... now I am going to keep the accelerator pressure absolutely constant and see if you can feel what I am complaining about." She says she can tell what I am talking about--an abrupt but quite slight reduction in car speed just exactly as if I had reduced the pressure on the accelerator--but I hadn't. Lest you think I'm nuts, I should mention that last week I rented a car in Canada and drove 500 miles and never had even a bit of the same experience.

It doesn't really get in the way of safe driving, but it takes a lot of the pleasure out of driving the car when it happens.

Another point: the problem was not always there. I think for the first 14 months or so that I owned the car, I never noticed anything like this.

Mark_888, you say

"I don't recall anyone complaining about problem #2 on the V6. "

So does that mean you do recall someone complaining about Problem #1? Obviously I am hoping for pointers on either issue. :-)

I don't recall problems with the camera, but I don't have the Tech Package, so I may not have paid close attention to problems other people have reported with the camera.

Yes. People have had your problem with the back up screen being black. They also say that the green and yellow lines are present but the screen is black. They needed a new camera installed. I would get that fixed before you factory 3/36000 comes up.

OK, thanks, that's good to know. I will take your advice.

Ashdump, I realized that what you say about black but with the lines there, that's exactly what's going on in my car, so thanks again...

I had the problem with the backup camera... I noticed that it happened after I had opened and closed the trunk...

I pulled the liner and found a loose wire... Fixed that and the problem hasn't repeated since...

I feel the weird lag in my 2010 4.6 w/Tech. It's as if the car downshifted and it's engine braking, but there was no downshift. Sometimes it's REALLY apparent, and other times it feels like it doesn't happen at all. Often I'll just find if I ease off the pedal slightly I can feel it - as if I drove into air that was made of mollasses and I had to push my way through it. It's strange. Is this what you were feeling, OP?

Also, I should say that it doesn't annoy me too much. It's weird and frustrating at times, but I just use the brute force method and apply more gas and go faster - then I don't notice :)

Capocriminali: Yep, that is *definitely* the issue I am talking about. Did it start after you had owned the car for a while, or was it always present? For me, it was not present for the first year or more.

wallymn: thanks for mentioning the possible trunk wiring connection--I'll check into that.

I've had it from day 1. I always assumed that it was the auto tranny shifting from 6th to 5th, but I've noticed that moving to "manumatic" mode shows me in 6th when this happens. It's not a huge issue, like I said, but if it's something out of line, I'd like to get it fixed. I just hit the 4000 miles mark, so :) It's almost time to change my oil. Maybe I'll ask the dealer then.

PS. Is it actually time, or are we good to 5k or 7.5k? I don't have the service manual infront of me, but I plan on reading it tonight. Anyone have comments of their own on this?

I'd do your 1st oil change asap, and then stick to the 7500 oil change interval as per the owners manual. I run Sythetic, and still change it at around 7,500 miles, but I drive hard.

My weird acceleration issues are probably designed correctly by Hyundai. The "drive by wire" really sucks.... I always find myself pushing the pedal down halfway, then backing off it while the car still accelerates. The car thinks I'm stupid and don't know how to control my foot. Thank you Big Government.

My backup camera has displayed a black screen on a couple of occasions. The lines are still present. The camera resets when I shift into park and then back into reverse. Its only happened a couple of times and I doubt I could ever replicate the issue at the service department, so I've never reported the issue.

Funny you mention that! My friend who is a big motor head got to drive my car a few days ago, and yes he was impressed (He's a Honda guy), but he laughed about the drive by wire since he could floor it going up his driveway and release the throttle and the car just started to react to the throttle being floored, and his foot was already off the gas. BS

Here's a comment from a viewer that watched one of my videos......"Is it just me or does it seem like the tranny is slightly lazy on shifting?"

No kidding huh?

This is no joke: similar to your friend.

They are doing road work right outside my apartment building and stripped the top layer of bituminous concrete: aka asphalt. There is probably a 2.5" elevation difference between the stripped road and where the original road picks back up. The construction crew didn't "feather" in the different elevations.

Anyway, its 6:00am and I'm approaching the sharp elevation change - I slow down to about 5mph so I don't hurt my baby- I see some punk approaching behind me and then floors his shitbox to go around because I was going to slow for him - as my rear tires made it up the lip his front tires about where my rear wheels were. I stuffed the gas because I was thinking, "I ain't letting this guy get in front of me".

The Genesis hesitated and the guy flew by me. The end of the road was only 100' away so I needed that "quick" reaction. I didn't get that. What I got was a long draaaaawn out response. My only gripe with the Genesis is the throttle response.

Sorry for the long story.

A follow-up from the original poster (me!):

I took the car to the Hyundai dealer and complained about both of these. I was dreading that they would say "we can't replicate it--sorry!" but instead they reported the following:

1. There is something wrong with the "throttle position sensor", and they have replaced that part and reprogrammed the ECM (whatever that is). The report referred to some memo or something, perhaps suggesting that the company is aware of this problem--I'm not sure.

I've been driving it for just one day after the fix and so far it has seemed perfect, so maybe they did fix it.

2. They have ordered a new videocam, and will put that in next week.

So with any luck, I may go back to being a super happy Genesis owner as I was for the first year I owned this car.
