  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What do you wish you had known before you bought your Genesis?

There is nothing more useful than insight from those that have been there and done that. As I am looking to purchase probably a 3.6 with a premium package, do any of you have guidance on price, methodology of the dealers etc that you can impart? I'm in Westchester, NY if any of you have local knowledge/dealer recommendations/warnings.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I wish I had known about the Dunflop tires. If you look on Tirerack.com the OE dunlops rank dead last in the survey section. I would have paid a few hundred dollars more for Michelin, Continentals, or Bridgestone tires. Otherwise after 12000 miles on my 2011 4.6 the car is fantastic.

I bought my car at the end of December. By that time I'd done a lot of research here and elsewhere, so there was nothing that I wished I'd known. Here are some of the items you should look into:

1. What others are paying for the car you want: there are a few threads on that here.

2. What Hyundai's plans are for 2012: I knew about some of the upcoming changes to the current 4.6 (5.0L, 8 speed, etc.), but didn't want to wait six months or so. I assume that there will be changes to the current 3.8 as well.

3. Tires: As homeofstone said, the Dunlops aren't very good (some would consider that an understatement). I had wanted to work a tire swap into the deal, but that didn't work out. I decided to use the Dunlops until they wear out and/or drive me crazy. (If I were in a location that required driving on snow I would definitely have changed them, though. We've gotten some here recently, but I used my old car.)

Hope this helps.

I wish I had known the Equus was coming out so soon after the Genesis. I would have banked the 40K I spent on the Genesis and put that toward a base Equus. Having said that, I have no complaints about my Genesis. Still a huge value for what is out there today. I'll have it at least another couple of years.

Go to costco.com and pretend you are going to use their auto purchase program. Find the closest dealer that participates in their program. You have to provide an email address early in Costco's web page... and it gets sent to the dealer even if you bail out of the web page. I found the Costco price quite competitive with what other folks posted on this site as their deals - and the Costco price is "no haggle." It's supposed to be "no extra dealer add-on crap/pressure" too though some dealers still try to push that high-profit stuff; mine didn't.

I arrived about an hour before closing time at the dealer... did a few test drives, etc. so it was a fair bit after closing by the time we started the paperwork. I didn't get any dealer run-around/crap-pushing. Was it because I used the Costco program? Was my dealer really "up and up"? One other person on this forum posted they got the typical hard-sell push crap at this dealer; my folks used the Costco program at their local dealer and that one did push the crap. Or was it because it was late and folks just wanted to get home? Don't know, don't care: I'll use the same technique next time.

You also have the advantage of knowing what other folks have paid for their cars based on threads in this forum. So you know what dealers can really do.

I wish I'd done enough research to understand that the difference between the 17-speaker Lexicon system that comes with the Tech package and the 14-speaker version that comes with the Premium package is a helluva lot more than 3 speakers.

I shopped dealers in Danbury and Milford, Ct. and White Plains and New Rochelle, Ny. I believe they are all authorized Equus dealers so they probably represent the best in the dealer network and I didn't find much difference between them. Leased my first Genesis in Danbury and the second in White Plains as it was more convenient and I "think" I got a good deal. I think the deal you get depends to a degree on which dealer on which day really needs to make a sale so if you have the time its smart to get a quote from them all.

I don't want to publish names on the internet so I will send you a private message with the names of the people I worked with who I think were competent.

That a basic 3.8 Genesis was all that we needed. We paid $4500 extra for the premium and navigation packages, which are not good values (for us).

I sprang for the premium/nav as well, because I was sick of my portable Magellan (which I seldom used, but the dangling cords annoyed the he&^ out of me). As it turns out, we hardly ever travel any more (for health reasons) and have no need for nav. I could have done with the basic as well. Oh well, maybe it will enhance the value at trade-in/sale time.

Nav system updates are beyond a PITA!!!

I paid $4500 for the tech package. You'd think that would come with a state-of-the-art Nav AND a current Nav database. Nav database was already nearly a year old when I bought my Genny in May 2009. It will soon be May 2011 and I'll be driving on a nearly 3-year old database.

Hyundai wants $300 and your car for the whole day (or sometimes longer) just to do an update and, if you've been scanning the posts here, it's been a nightmare for many who have taken the plunge to get the update (a lucky few have had smooth sailing).

I can update my wife's Garmin Nuvi in a matter of minutes over the internet for next to nothing.

Other than the Dunlops, I wish I had taken the car for a longer and private test drive over the areas I typically travel. When the salesperson is in the car, you can't really concentrate. And if you don't drive over roads you are intimately familiar with, you cannot understand how the car rides (stiffer than I wanted).

Make sure you check the tire pressure mine had 40 PSI which I believe is the pressure they keep them at till they're sold. I set mine to 33 PSI and It made quite a difference. I'm very satisfied with the ride now. I agree on the Dunlops.

Just bought my White Pearl, Cashmier 2011 4.6. To be honest I read many reviews where they talked about poor ride, in my opinion the ride is wonderful. I was nervous and convinced the dealer to let me take a long ride; put 20 miles with just my wife and I. Spent 6 hours negotiating, I wish I had known about the Genisis earlier, own a Audi A4 2.0 turbo very nice ride but for the same money I could have had the Genisis much earlier, now I have both! My opinion is if you are looking at the v6 and going for the tech package just buy the 4.6. They are making very good deals on them right now. Everything is incldued with the 4.6.

Thanks for your post. You are a better man than I. Your remark that you spent six hours negotiating sent chills up my spine and reminded me once again why I hate to buy cars. What dealer? I don't want to stumble in there by mistake. Thanks

I should preface that with the fact that I was there with my son and he was buying one also and this included the detailing the car, operation overview, for two cars, he got a new Santa Fe for his wife. So I dont want to scare anyone from getting a great car! I have owned alot of cars being over 50 :( This is the best value I believe anyone can find and they will get a wonderful ride that is also lots of fun. My son posted on as called it the 385 HP Luxury Barge, you feel like you step into another Dimension when you get in the car. Just drove 130 miles tody and it is the most relaxing ride I have had in a long time. then you step into the throttle and it is another beast.

I was actually looking to get the premium package because I felt it was the best overall value but ended up with the 3.8 tech package due to lack of availability of the premiums. Was the extra money worth it? Hard to say for sure but the premium/tech package sure does have some awesome features such as the adaptive cruise control and really impressive stereo. Did my homework and test drove extensively so no downside surprises yet.

Amen Brother! After having owned 47+ cars over my life, and now 21,900 miles later, I still feel the same way! I look forward to getting into this car every day just like my Porsche 928 that I drove for 10+ years!

I own the 2010 3.8 base version..
I wish i had known that the dunlop tires were so bad..........
I wish i had known that the base radio sub woofer is a waste of space...sound is nothing.
I wish I had known enough to drive the car locally more, instead of highway....Highway is great but I am on local streets 90% of the time and it does not take rough road or potholes well at all....All my passengers comment about it. Sort of kills the whole experience.....

I wish I had known the 2009 didn't have the adaptive cruise control. I was not happy when I figured that out (a few days after the purchase).

We have a 2011 Premium W/Nav. Cabernet red/Cashmere

I wish I had known a few small dumb things about it...No really big things, just some peeves I've noticed:

1. Without the tech pkg, you cannot customize the door locks, seat behavior, steering wheel behavior, etc...without a dealer visit...

2. The seat memory is great, but does not seem to include the lumbar position...

3. The climate control display, including the outside temp does not display all the time. I can understand hiding it in the nav mode, but in the A/V mode there's plenty of room to display it...

4. The cabin light mode switch is backward...it should be depressed IN to disable the interior lights and OUT flush to enable them...it just looks bad for it to be in all the time...

5. The EL gauge cluster is nice and clear, but does not dim as much as the rest of the dash illumination.

6. The narrow strip along the back of the hood near the windshield reflects overhead street lights and bright skies into your face and other reflections from it can be distracting when driving in areas with lots of overhead items (like city streets). You see alot of motion in your field of view...our car is Cabernet Red...may not be an issue with other colors...
