  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm looking at a base Genesis as an option but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the stereo in the base model. The PDF doesn't say who makes it. Who makes it and is it a good system? Thanks

I don't recall who makes the system components. But I really like my system in my base Genesis. I think it is a better sounding system than many of the high-end systems in cars like Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

It's also reliable. ;)

Good to hear :)

The base system audio system is made by the same company who makes the Premium and Tech Package audio systems (Harmon International). It has 7 speakers instead of 14 or 17 since it only plays stereo (not synthesized or discrete 7.1 home theatre surround sound). A few of the 7 speakers are identical to the ones in the 14 or 17 speaker system.

Although not as "dynamic" sounding as the 14 or 17 speaker systems, the base system sound is quite clean with relatively little distortion.

Thanks Mark, Is it easy to upgrade from the basic 7 to the 14 or 17 speaker system? Are the connections and speaker compartments in place to house the additional speakers in the doors and back deck. I suspect an updrade to the sub and amp would be necessary as well - any thoughts.

Thanks!!

It is not possible, unless you start replacing the top of the dash and other areas were there are extra speakers on the 14 speaker version. The 17 speaker version would require even more changes, such as the entire dash to fit the NAV/DVD screen, the DIS controller behind the shifter, etc. In 2009 I actually asked John Krafcik (former Hyundai Motor America CEO) that same question in a chat session on Hyundai Think Tank, because I did not want a model with a sunroof.

Save yourself the headache and just buy a premium or tech model.

If the sunroof was optional on those trim levels, I would have. But I don't drive that much and prefer sports talk radio most of the time when I do drive. When I do take long trips, I listen to audio books, etc recorded on my iPod. And as noted above, the music is not that bad on the 7-speaker system.

Yeah, I probably should have clarified, I currently have a base model 7 speaker system, also I have the NAVi x2 and sunroof as well. What I was thinking is to have upgrades to the 4 doors and rear deck w/ possible sub upgrade to fill in the gaps. I found the Lexicon head unit and amp on ebay was wondering if this would be an easy plug & play for the additional speakers while maintaining the stock profile. Perhaps it would be easy just to add an aftermarket amp to existing system with additional speakers - thoughts??

I am not an expert on the NAVi x2, but I would just upgrade the amp and speakers with regular after-market stuff. If you want surround sound, there are DSP units that will do that (although I am personally not big on surround sound). I would stay away from the Genesis Lexicon units.

Just wondering how you came by your sunroof, Yigenesis?

Yigenesis, how did you get a sunroof installed on your base model?

The sunroof was installed by the stealership that I purchased the car from and the sunroof brand is Signature Series Inbuilt. Very clean and professionally installed.
