  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What is your biggest complaint about the Hyundai Genesis?

Wow, just read entire thread. Lots of interesting points. I would say a lot the complaints I read about here can be fixed by reading your Owner's Manual and problem solving on your own. Settings Menu enables you to select settings you want.

I bought mine two weeks ago. Love this vehicle. My only complaints worth listing:

1. I feel like it could coast better. RPM's are not turning much when I want to coast, but it seems the vehicle is dragging compared to my last vehicle...my Tahoe which would coast forever. I am talking about wanting to coast from speeds 50 and below. I swear I can watch the vehicle lose speed on a downhill...weird. Highway speeds coasting seems about right though.

2. Ride is stiff but can be harsh around town on some roads. I have 18" so I accept it. Nitto Tires are pretty sweet though

My biggest gripes with the my 2009 Genesis 4.6 are as follows. Keep in mind I have only had it for a week.

4. Seat doesn't move in and out of driver position when starting/shutting off car like the steering wheel does.

You may need to fiddle with the settings with the DIS (I assume you have Tech package) but the seat should move in and out with the steering wheel. I think the setting is called "Easy Access"

Hyundai made some noticeable changes to the suspension in 2012 making the ride a lot more comfortable while maintaining good handling. However, the 2012 R-Spec remained fairly firm. One thing you can do to your 2011 is replace the rear stabilizer bar to the same part as on the 2012-2013 models which should help the comfort level of your ride and is not very expensive (about $125 for the part). There are some threads in this forum about the subject of replacing the rear stabilizer bar you might want to look at.

Also, a lot of people with 2009-2011 Genesis switched to tires noted for a very high level of driving comfort as they could find, like the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus, etc.

The 2012 models and up ride waaay better than pre-2012 models except for the R-Spec
But coasting!!! Wow.......

Easy Access on my new 13 Premium had to be activated by the dealer getting into the computer. Wasn't on coming from the factory.

I do not have the tech package :(

Biggest gripe? Electrical issues. In under 27k miles and less than 2 years, I've had:

3 front parking sensor failures

Headlights turn off when actuating turn signals

Cruise control failed two separate occasions

Audio system doesn't produce sound until it's rebooted

Random TPMS fail light

Windshield wiper motor failure

Headlights turn off when actuating turn signals?

In the daytime when your headlights are set to automatic the low beam (HID's) are off and your high-beam lights are operating in their place as a daytime running light. When you put your turn signal on the high-beam on that side turns off to make the signal more visible. It catches your eye when all of a sudden you see one light turn off and a yellow signal turn on in it's place, great safety feature.

I know I know :)
The Asian cars seem to stay in gear while GM cars/trucks that I am used to would seem to disengage and go into neutral when coasting. The Tahoe and G8 would coast for miles lol. I'm getting used to it so no worries.

Mark88 I will read up about the sway bar...thanks

Reliability has been pretty big with my experience with the two I have owned. I buy first generation - something I am reconsidering. I had an early 4.6 loaded 2009, and one of the first production 2012 R-Specs.

First one (2009) had all sorts of electronic issues. I think I went through 4 head unit replacements and 3 amps. The 2012 went through two engines - both had disintegrating pistons. They also found a factory defect in the transmission, and it was completely replaced. Cruise control failed, auto-hold failed, left fuel pump pushing a fraction of optimal PSI.

The dealership experience was mixed. I would not let the closest dealership sell the premium side of Hyundai.

That said, Hyundai made it right and purchased both cars back. They even offered me a sizable settlement to keep my mouth shut about my issues which I declined.

I'll buy a 2015. And hopefully, it won't have any of the issues I experienced on the first two. I don't want to be a field tester again. Both of the cars, minus the issues, have been exhilarating.

Dimitry with all due respect, why are you even thinking about buying a Hyundai? If I had two lemons I would never buy the same car again. Especially a first year production model.

Did you hire a lawyer for either of your two buybacks?

Hey, S&%# happens. What Dimitry experienced was a statistical rarity and is hardly a predictor that a third Hyundai would also go bad. Buying any car is a bit of a crap-shoot, and more people are lucky than not. I had the transmission and head unit replaced on my 2010, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Genesis - great car at a good price. However, my 2010 has barely 30K miles on it and I'm now retired and driving only a very few thousand miles a year, so I won't be needing a new car any time soon. The Genesis might very well outlive me.

I'm pretty loyal to the brand still. Hyundai ultimately agreed to make it right. We've got two new Santa Fes right now and they're great compared to the CRV we had. Even though I was pretty unlucky with my experiences, I'm willing to give the redesigned Genesis another try.

I retained an attorney for the first one I had, the second one I did on my own with the help of the BBB Auto Line (which were a pleasure to work with, great folks over there)

I'm beginning to think the Genesis is on par with Chrysler 300M. They put a lot of $#@* on a hunk of iron and think that's all people want. Well, Hyundai should have learned from the "Big 3" automakers and the Japanese (mainly Toyota) cars.
Quality will always triumph in the end, not bells and whistles......

1. the 6MT grinds going into 2nd (hyundai says its normal)
2. rev hang is anoying and takes away from the fun of driving?
wish i could turn the dash lights down but then cant read the blue screen of death!

On my 2013 R-Spec the steering wheel movement was on but not the seat. It was simple to change in the vehicle settings on the DIS.

Latest Nit Pic on a car that I really like.

The fan on the heating system is on really low when the system is on "auto" without regard to the differential of the temperature in the interior and the set temperature. It is like they "programmers" value the quietness of the heating system over the quick heating of the interior space.

Most cars seem to run the fan faster when the inside temp is far from the set temp. I wish the Genesis would also.

When I start in the cold weather, like -20C, the heater fan stays on low for a few minutes until there is a bit of heat in the system. Beats getting a blast of frigid air into the car!!

My 2003 Outback does this exact same thing. I have a scangage and the auto climate control in my Outback shows 130 degrees before warm air is blown out on 25% fan speed. 150 degrees and 100% fan speed. I think it's a smart feature.

QFT

My only complaint is the "community", such as it is. From outright dysinformation, to paid negative reviewing, to I've-never-heard-of-google threads, the Genesis owner's community is underwhelming. These are great cars, as well-built as any brand you care to name, but the owners who post on a site like this seem to be mostly first-time car buyers who seem to assume every issue they have is unique to the badge on the steering wheel. Otherwise, I'd wager many of the "problems" we're reading about are just made up crap by people who don't even drive a Genesis ;)

1. the 6MT grinds going into 2nd (hyundai says its normal)
2. rev hang is anoying and takes away from the fun of driving?
[3.] wish i could turn the dash lights down but then cant read the blue screen of death!
1. Mine was grinding occasionally into 2nd and 3rd, but went away when, believe it or not, I moved up to a "Top Tier" fuel (Shell V-Power, Chevron Techron, etc). Why?? It dramatically improved throttle response and a few other computer tune settings.
2. N/A on mine (normally aspirated).
3. You should have an interior light adjustment right in front of you, next to the traction control switch. I set mine about half-way, which greatly reduces that way-bright blue screen, without cutting the gauge lights too much.

For attempted clarification, my complaint was that the fan stays on low speed even after the engine is up to operating temperature. I have to manually increase the fan speed and then put it back on "auto" after the cabin is nearly warmed up.
