  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What is your biggest complaint about the Hyundai Genesis?

QFT

My only complaint is the "community", such as it is. From outright dysinformation, to paid negative reviewing, to I've-never-heard-of-google threads, the Genesis owner's community is underwhelming. These are great cars, as well-built as any brand you care to name, but the owners who post on a site like this seem to be mostly first-time car buyers who seem to assume every issue they have is unique to the badge on the steering wheel. Otherwise, I'd wager many of the "problems" we're reading about are just made up crap by people who don't even drive a Genesis ;)
So let me get this straight......

Your complaining that the community is bad yet you post here? Every car community can have "bad" information and people who troll, it's up to the people on the forums to steer it in the right direction. Yes, they are great cars overall but not free of problems that's for sure. This community as a whole is great and I'd wager to say most of us are far from first time car buyers, this is my 3rd Hyundai and my 10th car overall @ 43 years of age. Hyundai has problem areas that still need to be addressed if they are trying to compete with the premium car market.

Keep in mind that TopGear (and a few others) owns (and I presume is talking about) the Genesis Coupe, which I don't believe should even be discussed in this thread since it is part of the Sedan Forums.

To Top Gear:
I am not here to cheerlead or even to bad mouth. I am here to be informed. I appreciate the problems with their cars that members of this forum have shared with us. "Ignorance is not bliss."

That said my Genesis has been almost flawless. A few problems are to be expected with all cars. In 68 years I have owned many cars both import and domestic. This car is one of the best I have owned. "Knock on wood."

If you don't like a forum, TV show, movie, etc., you don't have to stay. Walk away. I am a long time car owner of many brands and vehicles. I have greatly enjoyed and have received helpful advice from this forum. My only wish is that Hyundai responded to issues. I am also looking at the Buick Lacrosse and Cadillac ATS or CTS. You go to their owner's forums similiar to this one, manufacturer reps are on it and responded and try to listen to their car owners.

After just reading Top Gear's condescending remarks, I encourage others to do like I will do and not read his postings or give him any response. People like this feed on others negativity.

When I owned two Toyota vehicles I read the forum for each (Avalon and Tundra) and found the forums to be very informative and, I must add, they weren't nearly as negative as this forum. I'm not sure why. Maybe, since Hyundai was a company that formerly sold only very cheap cars, there is a hightened suspicion that their business model hasn't really changed So..when we encouter a problem it gets magnified. Hyundai is attempting to be taken seriously and they are making strides...but where a few years back they were rated, I think, number 5 in reliability (Consumer Reports) they have since fallen in the Consumer Reports ratings in a big way (a Korean "Big Wig" was sacked for just this reason). Hyundai has gotten amazing press with the introduction of the Genesis and Equus but that can all be cancelled if the perception (truth?) of unreliable remains. I checked the latest annual Automobile publication of Consumer Reports for the Genesis Sedan. The Audio portion was completely black (as in the worst rating) for all years excpt 2013. I'll say this (At the risk of whiping a dead equine) when there are known issues it appears that Hyundai takes a back seat instead of getting out front. The readers of this forum (well at least the sedan portion that I frequently read) know of a half dozen, serious and I think very common issues that should have a blanket response from Hyundai but is dealt with piece meal if at all. I spoke to Hyundai about the "no audio" issue from my now third head unit and the customer service rep reports that she had never heard of the problem! Riiiight! As someone remarked earlier here "all cars have some issues" just be honest and quick about making it right for your customer Hyundai.

I find the extraordinary knowledge and commitment of a few members here (we all know who they are) to be valuable enough to sort through the others. And yes, we get to know pretty quickly whose posts to read and the forum members we should ignore. I might add, sometimes there is a price to be paid for genius, which can include the quirks of certain personalities. We don't have to be best friends or neighbors of these people, after all.

LOL. Thanks to some of you for proving my point about an underwhelming community of complainers dominating this site (and others). I don't expect you to read my posts, but if you were to do so honestly, you'd find a lot of helpful discussion about these cars and cars in general. Too bad you'll never see that, because once again, it's easier for you to single me out for attack and dis-invitation, breaking the pledge posted by the owner of this site, because you're so easily threatened by what I have to say. It's unfortunate that a Genesis Owner is not welcome on this Genesis Owner's discussion forum because truthful discussion points are made in my posts, I drive a Genesis Coupe, and I don't have the constant whining complaints you guys have with your cars. Meh.

Anyone is welcome to post. However, when I look at the forum hierarchy above it looks to me like this particular thread is about the Sedan. It gets a little confusing when people start complaining about problems with the coupe, and then people start responding, not realizing they are not discussing the sedan. As we all know, unlike other cars that have a coupe and sedan with the same name, the Genesis sedan and coupe are two completely different cars.

A lot of the complaints with the Sedan have to do with the Tech Package features, which are not offered on the coupe. Some of the complaints are just because people didn't read the owner's manual, but many complaints are actual quirks (questionable design) or reoccurring problems (often times intermittent that the dealer has a hard time reproducing).

1. Mine was grinding occasionally into 2nd and 3rd, but went away when, believe it or not, I moved up to a "Top Tier" fuel (Shell V-Power, Chevron Techron, etc). Why?? It dramatically improved throttle response and a few other computer tune settings.
2. N/A on mine (normally aspirated).
3. You should have an interior light adjustment right in front of you, next to the traction control switch. I set mine about half-way, which greatly reduces that way-bright blue screen, without cutting the gauge lights too much.

My only complaint is posters who think they know it all, but in actuality they know nothing.

(1) My 09 Genesis has great difficulty shifting. I have taken it back to the dealer twice in the last four years but all the tell me is that it is 'normal'. I took it back the second time because I wanted a record that I complained about this during the warranty period and Hyundai wouldn't repair it.

(2) Most all of us are aware that heating systems are different in different cars. My Genesis continues to use a very low fan speed even when it reaches full temperature. In fact, I usually manually select the fan speed. So, yes, the heating system doesn't worm the car except after a long distance.

(3) MY cruise control is worthless. The speed settings now run between 3-4 miles per hour over/under.

(4) My seat controls won't hold a setting. Another Hyundai dealer said that they can't find the problem. I now just adjust seats and steering wheel manually.

(5) Why don't I get rid of it?? Have you seen the value of a used 09 Genesis? That is why I'm stuck. I have a 2002 Porsche Boxster S with 49,600 miles on it and it is valued at more than the Genesis. So when someone says they have a problem with a Genesis, they probably do.

Top Gear is little more than entertainment. It ranks cars in this order: British first, European second, Asian and all others third and US-made products last (no matter the car). Their promotion of British-made stuff is rich as most of the brands have a long tradition of producing lemons. By contrast, they have already started bashing the new Corvette based on its photo. To keep up the pretense that they are an actual car show, perhaps they should drive the car first and then bash it. To be fair however, they did drive the new McClaren, costing just $1.4 million US, and found it an exceptional automobile. Please, who buys these boutique cars and for their price wouldn't that have to be extrordinary? How does this matter (to the majority of car buyers) how good these exotic cars might be? But it does make for great entertainment for the average Brit who typically drives a 1.1 liter Fiat Panda, because the cost of registration and fuel would be prohibitive if he/she drove something as large as a Ford Focus. In short, Top Gear's opinion of anything should not matter.

You started out by saying the community was full of complainers and called it underwhelming...I mean...what kind of response were you expecting lol? I'm all for open discussion, but don't play victim when the people here throw similar responses right back at you. It makes it hard to take you seriously.

You say people can find your posts useful. Cool. Yet, considering the fact you have a coupe, and this being the sedan-centric half, what can you really offer? Some of the quirks we've had you've never had to deal with (by your own admission). How can you even know what it's like?

I, for one, have definitely had my share of issues with the car. It IS a good car, but is not without its quirks.

On one occasion, when my brake lights suddenly died, I consulted this forum and found precisely what the problem was -- a blown diode. One Hyundai dealer had none in stock, the other had several. I drove 27 miles to the dealer who had them, had the diode replaced in less than an hour, and probably saved myself several hours of frustration and wasted time.

I'm a scientist with over 10,000 scientific citations. I repaired nuclear weapons in the U.S. Army. I used to do tuneups, brake jobs, carb overhauls, etc. I'm not a "car idiot," but I know my limitations.

My biggest gripe with Hyundai is that they themselves do not sponsor a bulletin board like this. As I've demonstrated online with a YouTube video, my Genesis 3.8 base model makes a much louder than normal version of a noise that all Genesis 3.8 make. There is without any doubt a NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) problem with my specific car. Hyundai central refers me to dealers who all say they can hear the noise but, since the plug in diagnostic indicates all is well, they have to declare as "normal". I'm sure that this noise will cost me big time if I attempt a private sale. EVERYONE who drives in my car can hear it. Several Hyundai owners have contacted me after seeing the video. None of us can get help.

Another issue with my Hyundai -- if I ever accelerate rapidly from a stop with the wheels turned, i.e., blast out of a right turn in quick oncoming traffic, the engine cuts out, bucks a few times, then regains its composure.

Other than that -- a fabulous car.

I thoroughly enjoy the car. Silky smooth and powerful with plenty of options. Can't really believe the stares and questions we get about it. Other brands should seriously prepare to lose market share.

One thing though: The puddle of loose leather in the drivers seat. Not cool. The GenesisOwners Forum helped with this by providing info on how other owners got their dealers to provide a fix. My 2013 w/Tech is at the dealer today getting botoxed.

Just a few design issues: I hate digital clocks (I'd prefer an analog clock with +/- buttons to set it), the peg to hold the floor mats should be a hook (the post doesn't work very well), and my biggest complaint is the CD player doesn't automatically advance to the next CD.

Ipod issue - another somewhat quicker way to get back to the "albums" when you hit back if it messes up. Select "artists", then go back and select "albums." Works for me everytime if it gets buggy. Hope new Genny is going to let us use the newest cord.

I own a CPO 2011 Genesis sedan with Tech/Prem pkg (bought at end of January 2014). So, far the drive is smooth and I enjoy the vehicle. I am in the process of changing the trunk emblem.
My biggest complaint is regarding the useless Navigation system which can not identify (m)any of the addresses I entered. After using the best Honda navigation for years, I can say that this is at the lowest of my ratings. I am not sure how I can update it. The price I paid for this nav is a waste.
And secondly, this issue may be limited to my vehicle: Whenever I drive on a speed bump, i here minor squeeking noise from front lower bumper. This may be due to suspension or a shaft. I did ask the dealer about it couple of weeks after I bought and he said its normal wear. I still doubt it but, I trusted the CPO certification.
Let me see how it goes.

I was looking forward to using a "built in" GPS system. Being used to Garmin, I too was very disappointed with the NAV system. Back to Garmin I'm afraid.
