  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What type of oil is everyone using?

Come on guys. Lets not have this turn into a reddit post. I didnt create this to have people puff out their chests. I posted to ask a question that I have 0 info about. As Im sure others are in the same boat as me out there, so lets not have them come to a thread full of "touch guys/gals".

plan on going full synthetic in mine. been using it for years with great results.

I've been using Mobil One since its inception in the states about 1975 - with no problems whatsoever.

Problem is the 5.0 L. engine is a real bear to do an oil/filter change. Even the dealers are complaining - and botching the jobs - from what I'm reading.

But I'll still do it myself.

I am using Mobil 1 0w-30 on my 5.0.

I did the first oil change myself. It was a difficult oil change, but much easier than my Toyota Sequoia.

Nothing difficult at all about the oil change. Only issue which makes it more difficult is the removal of 2 panels and all the retainers. Quite a chore if you do not have a second set of hands and you alsmost need a bunch of spare retainers as they are difficult to get back in once used. In hindsight, Hyundai should have made a couple of small access panels for the filter and the drain plug.

I asked a Ind. shop near home how they handle this type of problem and he said they cut a round hole by drain area and install a oil valve . He said on the V6 they remove the filter from the top...v8 they cut an access hole for the filter.
They mod many new cars like this.

I have a second set of hands, so you're right - it'll be a piece of cake for me.

I read all these oil suggestions and ended up no were. Seems everyone just does what they think is right. What do Hyundai Genesis people suggest?

I use Valvoline 5W-30 Synthetic High Mileage oil.

Oil changed every 4k miles myself. I like a clean long lasting dependable engine.:)

5W-30 Castrol Syntec. I know there are nay sayers, but I have always had good luck with this stuff.

I used to run only Castrol Syntec for years in my old German cars. However, it seems that Valvoline latest oils are rated better hence why I changed up.

Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5W-20. Super cheap at Walmart.

That's what my dealer puts in too.

Seems to vary then across dealers.

The dealer I go to uses Quaker State and when I asked they told me that is what Hyundai recommends, which is why they use it.

You can pay extra for the synthetic at the dealership, branded as Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Outside of that, I personally use Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30.

I was using Mobil 1. On this oil change I am switching to Castrol Edge full synthetic. The reason for the switch is a vehicle I just purchased requires the SN+ and ILSAC GF-5 certifications and Mobil 1 5w-30 does not meet that certification yet (according to Mobil phone support). I wanted to use the same oil in both vehicles. The Genesis requires a less stringent certification (ISLAC GF-4).

Both Castol and Mobil 1 recommended using 5w-30 in my Genesis. I had been using 0w-30. Since I am in TX, the 0w was not important, so, based on their recommendation, I am changing to 5w-30. I know I could use 5w-20, but I prefer not to, especially with the heat in TX.
