  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What's the difference b/w the Premium and Tech stereo systems?

Trying to understand the differences between the Premium and Tech package stereos. I see the Tech package has more and better speakers. It also supposedly has a Multimedia Controller but I'm not sure what that means, as I thought the Premium package stereo can also play ipods. Is the Multimedia Controller for DVDs? Seems like a weird thing to have given that you can't play DVDs when you are driving.

At the end of the day I'm trying to decide if it is worth getting the Tech pkg with the 3.8V6 or instead just getting the Premium and Nav packages.

Thanks for the help

There are two differences.
a) two additional speakers in the front
b) "digital" surround.

I have a 2009 Genesis with Tech Package and a 2010 Genesis with the Premium package. Both systems are good, but there a noticeable (better) difference in the quality of the Tech Package. I was rather surprised that two additional speakers (out of total of 17) make that much difference to the overall sound quality.

BTW, the NAV system on the Premium package is better and easier to use in my opinion - the menus are more intuitive and there are a lot more speech recognition commands available. Of course, you'll have to live with "smudges" on your screen, since it is a touch screen interface.

I guess you can't have everything...

I believe the "tech" package also has an additional speaker front/centre and one each extra in the front doors. Here is a link to the speaker placement for both systems

Yes, there are differences in the some speakers, but that is secondary and dictated by the design of the systems as described below.

  • The 17 Speaker System in the Tech Package has the capability of playing discrete 7.1 surround sound on a DVD video or DVD-A audio such as you would find in a home theater system receiver. It actually takes 5.1 discrete signals and converts it to 7.1 using two additional rear surrounds. It also provides the video for DVDs. The 7.1 (or 5.1) discrete audio is not available on CD or MP3, etc, media.
  • The 14 Speaker System system simulates 5.1 surround sound from a two-channel stereo CD using Lexicon's conversion logic that recreates the rear channel (adding an appropriate delay) and separating out the bass for the sub woofer channel. The 17 speaker system does the same thing when playing 2-channel stereo with CD media (or MP3, etc).
Bottom line is that both will sound similar if playing sources that only contain 2-channel stereo.

I think this is third time I have posted this. There will be a pop quiz on this tomorrow.

Yes I get the 7.1 surround and all. What I was asking about is that the Tech package stereo includes a Multimedia Controller. Not sure what that is

The 17-speaker stereo, part of the "Tech Package" option, uses the between-seats control knob (behind the shift lever, not found in non-Tech cars) to control many of the stereo & navigation system functions... this controller package replaces the stereo button/control panel on the main dash. It's similar in concept (though executed more intuitively IMHO) to the BMW "iDrive" system or the Mercedes "COMAND" system: integrate the controls for several car systems into one multi-axis controller. Since it controls the stereo & DVD functionality on the Genesis, it gets called the Multimedia Controller. Hyundai's name for the stereo+nav+controller+etc is the "Driver Information System" or "DIS."

The left side of the steering wheel hub has controls for commonly used stereo functions as well. The stereo controller & navigation system are integrated into the same box on the Tech package cars; I don't know about the other models. The Tech system actually splits the audio/visual system into several electronic boxes: the in-dash display, the main head unit below it (with the DVD player, main "brains" of the system, the hard disk for the nav data base, and the nav system itself), a digital amp in the trunk area (this amp has the AM/FM tuner), the "media unit" module inside the dash behind the glove box (USB & iPOD processing computer), and the in-center-armrest USB & iPOD interfaces.
