  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When to apply parking brake

I don't know about other models, but the G70 does. Or at least, I thought it did.... Maybe I'm misremembering. Lol.

We should all go collectively try it right now. Haha.

From Ed’s post it sounds it might be tied in with auto hold. Which I never use

It is certainly implied and I've had it on when I use Auto Hold and then stop, but was reluctant to say for certain. I've parked on a hill and took the shift out of Park and it did not move.

Just tried my base 3.8 G80 in the garage, I can say that on a flat surface, it rocks the prawls.. 😁

I there folks, I had 2 Cadenzas, 1 Borregoe, now on Genesis. Exactly same issue here. Now I realize the car can't see everything is shut. In the Cadenza, the PB engages after opening a door. It's not the mechanical parts because it holds when you put on N, which is good news.

So glad the 6MT has a proper hand brake.

Our Stinger doesn't have an electronic parking brake, thank goodness. Not a proper hand brake, but at least it's cabled mechanical.

Sadly, hand brakes are going extinct like dinosaurs. Even a pure sports car like the GR Supra 6MT has an e-button parking brake.

I usually do it like this : stop car > shift into N (while holding brake pedal) > engage parking brake > release brake pedal > shift into P
That's exactly the correct way to do it. Few more pointers about the PB on my G70: With auto-hold ON, parking brake automatically engages every time. And contrary to my '22 SF Calligraphy, auto-hold has memory on the G70, so if you have it on, it'll continue to be on (and applying parking brake every time you park) until turned off. Car will automatically apply the PB when on an incline, so you know, but it's better to follow the procedure linked when on an incline, to prevent tranny pawl from getting loaded. G70 automatically releases PB upon selecting a gear, which is different from most other vehicles, where you have to apply throttle to auto-release it. Finally, on all my other Hyundai/Kia vehicles, to automatically apply the parking brake all the time, I just held the parking brake lever up (or out) for a second or two. And to deactivate that feature, the opposite. Those who want auto-PB and don't use auto-hold, could try it.

Finally, on the parking pawl, there's a positive disengagement arm on the pawl, to avoid putting tranny in gear while the pawl is still engaged, but it cannot be seen on that video. Just as an FYI, as some might think it's just the puny spring pulling the pawl out, when it's not the case. It's just there to prevent the pawl ever touching the tranny while driving.
