  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am interested to here everyone's view on the Genesis's place in history.

20 years from now how will the Genesis be viewed?

An important milestone for Hyundai?
A significant car for Hyundai, raising the bar for the brand but little/no impact on other brands.

An important milestone for premium cars?
A car which forced other premium brands to rethink how to price/market entry level lux cars.

Completely forgotten?
A car which made no impact on Hyundai or the market in general.

A joke?
A car so bad (we don't know how the car will hold up long term) that it became the punch line of jokes about bad cars....

I tend to think this car will be a milestone for premium cars like the original LS.

What are you thoughts?

Lexus LS 2.0.
I think Hyundai should start their own Luxury Brand called "Genesis". Phil Collins as spokesman? The car will mark their accent into the lux-market share gain against Lexus, Infiniti, Acura world. Not so much against the Germans.
Perhaps it will be referenced in the context of the fall of American Co's and the rise of the Koreans.

in my opinion it will be remembered as an important car and a milestone for Hyundai but not a gamechanger or breakthrough for the industry as a whole such as the Ford Model T or the original VW Beetle. It will mark Hyundai's elevation into the premium market segment, perhaps as a separate brand and will put price pressure to its competitors especially if it can continue to keep its quality up and continue enhancing and refining the product (line), which I think it can.

I give them credit for making the luxury sedan affordable to a customer segment not previously seen, but the luxury sedan market is a relatively small piece of the pie, so the impact is not as overarching as it was, for example, when Ford's original Explorer entered the market starting the SUV-trend.

Just my 2 cents.

Warp08 - agree not a game changer, but a segment of the market changer. If you are looking for large rear wheel drive car with lots of power & amenities you immediately think of S-Class,7 Series, Lexus LS, Audi A8, Infiniti M, which of course are all exclusionary due to price. Here comes Hyundai and says hey, most of what you need, 1/3 to half the price off if you can get over the snob appeal, take a gander...and people are buying into it.

I have to agree with TJ and warp. The explorer actually followed a trend that started with land rover following the toyota landcuiser, then ford bronco 2, following isuzu trooper. Then came explorer, pathfinder following is everything else we see today. Even the SUV is not an american concept. We just popularized it and I guess became the SUV leaders.

Yes but in pure American fashion, we basterdized it and took it to extremes (see Hummer), till it blew up in our faces and left us looking back and saying, WTF were we thinking. Then it took the Japanese (see Lexus RX) to streamline it (or cut the balls of depending on who you ask), and make it more mass appeal friendly (see soccer mom). Life is full of compromises, the Genesis is a great one.

LOL I'm not even sure Hyundai would go so far as to compare the Genesis to a Lexus LS. They're going for the Chrysler 300 market, which I think the Genesis does very well.

It's a "premium" car, not a "luxury" car in my opinion... there is a large difference.

I'm curious to see the 2010 Genesis. The current is groundbreaking for Hyundai and truly marks their progress. I wouldn't compare it to Lexus though, especially their top model.

Off topic but how would you define a luxury car? Infiniti's M45 matches very well to the Genesis and I would call the M45 a luxury car.

Is a MB C class a luxury car? I wouldn't call it one, but some might.

Subjective, impossible to define, like porn. But you know it when you see it. Based on how Gen makes you feel, yes. Also going on other people reactions, especially to the interior, yes. Premium car is probably more accurate if you are looking at it from a market segmentation point of view. I let my friend drive it on the highway at night. I said punch it, he said, "holy $h*t, this is a Hyundai?". Based on his reaction, lux.

Fair question. :) I wouldn't call the C class a luxury car either. I'd rate the Genesis higher than the C, in spite of the huge obnoxious Mercedes logo on the front.

A luxury car (to me) would be the Lexus LS, Mercedes S class and quite obviously Bentley, Rolls, etc.

I'd also consider the Infiniti M a mid-level luxury car. To me, a car can have luxurious features and not necessarily bei a "luxury car" -- it's all about the overall experience. For example, when I would take my Lexus in for service, they roll out the red carpet and treat you like royalty (My Lexus dealer had an on-site masseuse -- frill, I know.) When I take my Hyundai in for service, I wait in line with Chrysler customers (the local Hyundai dealer also sells Chyrslers) and deal with the same people that service an Elantra. I realize that seems elitist, I just don't think the quality of service is the same as with true luxury cars. I'm not sure Hyundai is ready to compete in that segment just yet, but I give them full credit for tremendous progress and I think they will get there. I also fully understand and respect their decision not to create a separate brand (yet) for their new luxury line... dealer networks are expensive and too many irons in the fire is one of the many reasons GM and Chrysler are in peril.

For the money, the Genesis is a great car.... not sure you could do a whole lot better at that price point. I just wouldn't compare it to a $70,000 Lexus. :D
