IMO, depends on where one lives.

In the warmer climates with intense sun, lighter colors are preferred (there is a reason why Don Johnson wore those light colored suits on Miami Vice). Those who live in cold climates will benefit from dark colors when temps get low and when it snows.

The choice can also be influenced on how often the car is parked out in the sun, versus a garage, covered parking, etc.
