If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have seen a number of posts on here from people who prefer the styling of the Genesis sedan to the Equus. While I like the looks of the Genesis sedan, the rear end and tail lights in particular, overall it is a bit conservatively styled for my taste. The Equus, on the other hand, is drop dead gorgeous.

Which do you prefer?

The front styling of the Equus looks somewhat funky. The sides look like the newer Buick (which is a good thing) and the rear looks husky. Not a big fan of the front grill. I was told that they are planning on modifying the 2011 Genesis front grill to bring the 2 cars closer together class wise.

Not a fan of the Equus at all, really like the genny in every respect. ;)

I am lucky enough to have seen, sat in, and drooled all over an Equus. It is quite the car, damn near a limo in the roomy interior.....BUT, probably a bit over the top for my tastes. Although they would not let us mortals test drive it, I'm certain it must drive like a dream. But it is fancy enough to make a statement about the owner (driver) that only prestige cars make.

I'll stick with Gennie; she's a GREAT deal. :D

I much prefer the Genesis. I also much prefer the name "Genesis" over "Equus".

I may be odd, but I prefer the styling of last year's Sonata over the new model.

+1 on last year's Sonata styling. You are not odd.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Well, after seeing and driving the Equus I will lease one as soon as my Gen. kease is up. Iwill see how the hood ornement can be removed.

The new Sonata has it all over the stale styling of the old one.

The Genesis is the real trendsetter, without it there would be no Equus in the states.

It would be like asking - do you like the 5 series, or 7 series better?

The public better start liking the styling of the Equus in a hurry in order to move those $55,000+ price tags. It will have to be more than competitive pricing against the super luxury cars to move these cars. Style will have to work as well.

The American Equus will not have the hood ornament. I've edited my original post to include photos of both vehicles.

If I end up with an Equus, I will likely have the hood ornament added back on. I'm good like that.

I think the new Sonata styling is on par with the Genesis, and both are more integrated than the Equus. Yes, the Genesis is conservative relative to the new Sonata, but I think that's with intent on the part of Hyundai, and approach Lexus took way back when they introduced the original LS 400. That was correctly labeled as derivative (mostly of MB), but that didn't stop it selling like hotcakes. The new Sonata, on the other hand, has a "wow" factor that should work well in the economy-plus segment.

I worry that, when put up against the S-class and 7-series, the Equus might be taking a step too far into a market where status matters, and value is less a determinant. Time will tell, and it'll be fun to watch.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

I think the Genesis and the Equus are mere marketing for the lower priced cars Hyundai has to offer. If you think about it; someone who is going to buy a new Sonata will appreciate that the manufacturer is also producing "Luxury" models which is why they even went to look at a Hyundai in the first place.

I don't really think Hyundai over the long run will be pumping out Ultra luxury models to the masses like Benz/BMW but I could be wrong. For right now, their bread and butter is the Sonata and Tuscon and possibly the Santa Fe.

Me, as a consumer feel more comfortable with a purchase from a manufacturer that can also produce high end luxury products as well as economical ones. I think you will soon see a LARGE portion of consumers heading over to Kia/Hyundai over the next 5 years. I'm just glad me and my girlfriend on in before it becomes cool to own a Hyundai!!!!!!

The Equus looks VERY nice in person. It has such road presence and IMHO, looks way better than a Lexus LS460 compared side by side.

Socrates, I know you're looking for a car w/ great value that has class.
IMO, the Equus might fit you better.
Plus the Lexicon system in the Equus is rated at 608 watts. I wonder if they'll sound better than the tech pack system in the Genesis.

If the Equus don't sell too well, I'm sure they'll go for quite a bit lower than the asking price. This of course can't be expect within this year, cuz I'm sure the dealers wouldn't go too low with a brand new car.

I'm not sure if other members prefer the Genesis because it's a better value or they simply prefer the styling of the Genesis.
For me, I'd take the Equus if someone were to offer me a choice between the two.

Dan

I think the Genesis looks better, though I'm sure the Equus is a nice car. I also can't get over the fact that there is a play with that name that deals with some bizarre subject matter *shudders*. It will suck just a little bit to not be the top horse in the stable (pun intended) ;-).

I've also seen both (at the NY Auto Show). Other than the length, if you put the same equipment in both and said they were same price competitors I think most people would choose the Genesis.

This informal poll is 5:2 for the Genesis, and that is before the 2011 (or what I think will be a January 2011 2012-model). After that the gap may seem bigger, especially if the Genesis gets a Nav upgrade to Microsoft Sync and the Equus doesn't.

You may be right. Right now the plan is to hold off buying a Genesis until after the Equus, the 2011 Genesis, and 2011 5 Series are released so that I can drive all three before making a decision.

Very smart decision. If you're not in a hurry, that would be the way to go.

The price of the Lexus I replaced with my Genesis was 61000, the 2010 replacement was quoted as 69000. I find my Genesis is everything I hoped it would be at 40000. I will buy the Equus after a test drive as it will have those appointment I want, full furnished seats, folding mirrors and a more passive ride. I expect the Equus to be in all ways a luxury replacement for the lexus 460L at the same overall reduction in price, and if the quality is like the Genesis better than the Lexus.

Personally, both cars are unique in their own way. Its a matter of personal choice. For me, I rather have the Genesis because the Equis is too much car for me at this time. Its bigger etc...

Nonetheless, you have to respect what Hyundai is trying to accomplish with both cars. :-)
