  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Whine / Noise under hood

Hey guys. I am getting the whining noise on my 2012 R-Spec. Yes sir it finally reared its ugly head. Faint but none-the-less noticeable.

Will take it into the dealership. Car has 40k miles on it.

Is this the famed belt pulley we hate about in other posts?

Just had the same issue with the whine noise. I actually had it for a few months before the dealer brought it up at my 45000 mile maintenance. It ended up being the idler pulley like people have said in previous post. Car sounds fine now. It was covered under the 60000 mile warranty.

Edit: 2011 3.8

Just bought 2012 3.8 sedan. Love the car but I do have an unusual whine while moving and turning only to the left. Not noticeable to the right. Suspect adaptive steering but wonder if others have noticed this and if a known problem is common. Thanks.

I had this same problem on a 2011 Genesis changed it this morning resolved the problem..40 part for and 40 in labor to install sound great don't even know the car is running now...

Thanks to previous contributors on this thread I was able to get a quick solution to the belt whine noise I experienced.

After replacing the Hyundai idler pulley P/N 25286-3C250, purchased from rockauto.com, the belt whine noise I previously experienced during light acceleration - disappeared completely. It is a real pleasure to drive the vehicle without this noise.

I did this on my 2013 Genesis sedan (3.8L V6) with approximately 100,000 km. I watched a lot of youtube videos before attempting this job myself and learned that you must untension the serpentine belt using a 19 mm socket and at least a 16" socket extension handle to get enough leverage to turn it counter-clockwise.

See attached diagram I edited.

I have a 2011 3.8 with 100,000 miles. I wanted to change the serpentine belt as it had some play in it and was squeaking with the steering hard over . Otherwise it looks in great shape. However I couldn't budge the tensioner pulley. I then loosened the bold holding the tensioner a quarter turn and the tensioner moved on its own taking up the slack. It now moves freely and the belt tension seems appropriate. I will be leaving the bolt in this position. Has anyone experienced this? Does it mean the tensioner is bad?

Check for fluid leaking out of the piston area of the tensioner. If it's leaking, replace it. I would also replace the idler pully if it hasn't been done yet.

Had the famous whining sound for months on my 2010 coupe 3.8. Used a mech stethoscope but couldnt pinpoint exact cause. Sounded like it was coming from top of engine, not any particular pulley. Eventually the sound changed from whining to that marble in a can sound that someone mentioned above. Mechanic buddy said to pull off serp belt and run engine for about 10-20 seconds (no more than that!!) to see if noise was coming from engine or a peripheral. Water pump and idler pulley spun fine. AC comp pulley was noticeably wobbly and rough sounding. Changing the bearings on it today. Went ahead and changed water pump, thermostat, flushed coolant, and bought a new serp belt. Coming up on 200k miles so figured it was time!
