  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
1G Genesis Sedan (2009-2014)
2009 Genesis 4.6 with 125k on it. 3rd owner. After driving 16k miles, she will not start? She turns over? Towed my car to the mechanic, he indicated I needed; 1 Ignition coil, 8 spark plugs, 1 crankshaft sensor, and 2 H2o sensors. I found out she has front and rear, left and right, H20 sensors? that's 4? The Mechanic did not indicate which ones? I ordered the parts online.

Towed the car home. Now two OBDII readers indicate there is no communication? I read somewhere else that if my cigarette lighter is not working, the OBDII may not communicate? Can't locate the Cigarette fuse? Is this really my issue to get codes? Will the OBDII give codes if the car is not running?

When my AC quit blowing cold, this same mechanic said he could not fix it? I fixed the AC my self $75. Another mechanic said $600 with no guarantee? An ac expansion was all that was needed. They are very easy to do. DIY nation. The valve was $13 and the home recharge AC kit was $45 at a local auto supply shop. Done deal. Savings $400 and a big confidence boost to work on my own car.

Intermittent OBDII issues continue. P0456 indicates EVAP Leak. Is my Mechanic guessing? He indicated I needed; 1 Ignition coil, 8 spark plugs, 1 crankshaft sensor, and 2 H2o sensors. I found out she has front and rear, left and right, H20 sensors? That's 4? The Mechanic did not indicate which one he needed? He requested one? What coil shall I replace? He one wanted one? This is an 8 banger.
Shall I replace the front 2 h20 sensors, Left or right two?, Will an OBDII indicate more than just a vacuum leak?

Thanks, Genesis Owners.com!

Well probably one of the two valves noted below has failed.

"Code P0456 Meaning
The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The fuel vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed and stored by charcoal pellets in the charcoal canister. The vent control valve is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) and allows air to flow into the charcoal canister to purge the gas vapors into the engine air intake to be burned. The flow of the gas vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine air intake is controlled by a purge valve. Both the vent control valve and the purge valve are usually open when the engine is at normal operating temperature. However, the ECM occasionally performs leak tests to ensure the evaporative emission control system is working properly. During the leak test, the ECM closes the vent control valve and purge valve to create a vacuum. If the EVAP system does not maintain the pressure, the ECM recognizes an evaporative emission control leak. In the case of P0456, it is a small sized leak, smaller than .020” in diameter."

If the plugs were not replaced at 100k miles, then other items were most likely not done which may have started some of the problems.

below is a list of items many owners don't do and then trade the Genesis before problems start.

Fuel tank Air filter
Fuel Filter
Regular changing of engine air filter
Transmission Service fluid/filter before 100k miles, it uses a special fluid since its the same German ZF transmission as in Bentley, Jag and other luxury cars.
Check driveshaft carrier bearing
Only use OEM oil filter, after market ones have caused engine problems.

Did you put a new CPS on?

Home of stone, Thanks for your advice it's priceless. What is a CPS?
PO456 EVAP CODE. Is the only code that was given. A new mechanic used a Snap-On Tools computer? He said this car needs a software update? $200. The ECM will make it run for $1000 not including labor. Any ideas?

There was a software update on the early Genesis which was provided free by the dealer. However, the previous owner apparently did not have it done. The CPS is the crankshaft position sensor.
